violated people’s civil rights• Outlawed discrimination in employment • Established Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

passed

Not the First Time…

• President Eisenhower also created a Civil Rights Act in 1957

• However, this Civil Rights Act had many flaws– Focused mainly on voting– Never really enforced– Even if it were to be enforced it would have been

brought before an all white jury in the South• Still significant because it was the first Civil Rights bill

passed since Reconstruction & it set the tone for the Civil Rights Act of 1964
