All children need to be congratulated on their behaviour and achievements. All four relay teams swam very well with each improving on their entry times. The Junior Boys relay team consisting Ned Isedale, Harry Willoughby, Fergus Atkinson and Darcy Clifton were successful in being selected to represent our school at the State carnival in Homebush in April by gaining third place. Individual swimmers off to state are Charley Isedale for freestyle and Jack Isedale for freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. Darcy Clifton who was fourth in both his events just missing out on going to State. All other children should be very proud of their efforts. They all achieved results in the top 25 of the North West Region in their events.

MATHS PROBLEM OF THE WEEK

WINNER FOR WEEK 4 IS:

Olivia Tilborghs. Olivia worked out that the inner shape was a real circle! The hint was to cover as many of the other lines as possible to see the shape without distortions.

Maths Problem of the Week

Who am I?

I am a two-digit number. The

sum of my digits is 11. I am divisible by both 4 and 7. What number am I?

The homework centre being run by teachers here on Monday afternoons is proving to be a great success with numbers so far this year most pleasing. For about an hour soon after school finishes all students who want assistance with the weekly homework are free to take themselves to the school library where the staff members rostered on will provide support as required. Afternoon tea is also provided. Even if all homework for the week isn’t completed in that time what is achieved should allow the rest to be completed with minimal problems at home during the next few days. If homework is an issue at your place and you’d like your children to receive help encourage them to stay on Monday afternoon. Apart from the permission note (required the first time a child attends) all teachers ask is that those attending come with the work organised and a good attitude.

Parents with children in K-4 would have received a survey package via the youngest child. If you have not returned the survey we would appreciate you completing the survey and returning it to the class teachers ASAP. The last day for our school to have 100% completion rate is this Friday, 9 March.

You should have received your invitation to ‘Dads’ Brekkie’ by now but this is just a quick reminder to ensure that you have saved some time to come along next Friday 16 March.

The breakfast will start at 7:30am so please come along and enjoy a delicious breakfast, some fun games and a look around your child’s classroom. We are looking forward to seeing you all there!

DATE: THURSDAY TIME: 6—9PM

ENTRY COST: $3

Jayde Sim

Jayde is a quiet and diligent student who always tries to do her best and is willing to ‘have a go’ at tasks she is not familiar with.

She makes a real effort to listen intently to instructions and begins

work tasks with a minimum of fuss. Jayde is building her confidence in

talking in front of the class and joining in classroom discussions. She is a lovely young lady who always remembers her manners and is

a pleasure to teach.

CPS Buzzie Awards The school’s new reward system is now in full swing with the first lot of primary awards being handed out at last week’s school assembly. The system is working well with a large number of students achieving their first milestone on the Bronze Certificate. We also have a Buzzie Bee award, which we have implemented to encourage positive behaviours across the school. This term, the Buzzie Bee is awarded to the class with the best behaviour during Music lessons with Miss Eriksson. So far, this award has been given to 3H (Week 2) and 5/6M (Week 4).

5/6M are lucky enough

to have Mrs. Rouse come into our

classroom to teach us Reading 2 Learn. For

the first few weeks we have focused on

Narrative. We have read and discussed

many different narratives and written some as a class and by ourselves. As a whole the class has written some interesting and creating narratives.

Keeping to our Natural disasters theme,

students completed a narrative about a their

choice of natural disaster. Many students produced outstanding

work.

Art — Natural disasters!!!

So far this term we have been completed

some artworks on bushfires, volcano's

and Landscapes. Some of these

artworks are being displayed at the

Coonabarabran Show this weekend.

5/6M Term 1

Clean up Aus-tralia Day

Due to the weather 5/6M were unable to go out-side to clean up last Friday.

Fortunately, the students were so enthusiastic that we went out on Tuesday afternoon to clean up our school.

Thanks to all who were involved.

5/6M have spent the start of term

1 studying Natural Disasters.

Did you know? In Australia, an earthquake of Richter magnitude 5.5 (i.e.: almost that of the

Newcastle event in 1989) occurs every 15 months on

average.

Causes of bushfires

Bushfires can be caused deliberately or accidentally. Some of these causes are:

leaving a fire unattended (at a camp, barbeque) having an open fire on a dry windy day the glass from a bottle or mirror can cause a

small flame to become a raging wildfire a cigarette or match that has not been put out,

and flammable chemicals that are left in hot areas or

in the sun.

There are over 1,500 potentially-active volcanoes world-wide and

eight to ten can be erupting at once

Large hail can be extremely devastating. The largest hailstone ever recorded was on

June 22, 2003, in Aurora, Nebraska. This stone was 17.78 cm in

diameter and had a 48.26 cm

Circumference.

The following strategies have been compiled by the Parent Line Counselling team, to help families in adjusting to change and managing some of the challenges associated with difficult transition periods.

Try to attend to the basics first, like sleep, nutrition, exercise and relaxation. Try to have realistic expectations about this period and to prepare for

possible challenges associated with adjusting to change, new routines, expectations etc. This might mean cutting children a bit of slack initially as they come home from school exhausted and cranky, making sure they get time for refreshments and replenishment once home, before engaging in after-school activities etc.

Check in regularly with your kids and keep the lines of communication open with them. Acknowledge and normalise that transitions are hard and that it takes time to get used to new routines etc. Share funny

stories of your own struggles with change. Try to establish a school/work/home balance, with plenty of opportunities for ‘down time’. For example, not taking on too many

commitments and after school activities at once. One activity per child is often quite sufficient, so both children and parents may therefore have to prioritise interests.

Implement a homework routine, have a designated time and space for homework, as well as opportunities for children to seek parental

assistance and support with homework. Develop clear expectations about family responsibilities/chores, reward

systems (e.g. pocket money) and consequences for non-completion. Be gentle with yourself and monitor your own stress levels. Try to take

regular ‘time out’ even if it’s a few minutes here and there for deep breathing, a cup of tea, walk etc

Repair relationships when there are ruptures. We are only human and all parents will ‘lose it’ on occasion under stress. It’s good modelling for children when we can take responsibility and apologise for mistakes.

Seek support and assistance with challenges. Stress can isolate us and cause us to withdraw when what we really need is to reach out.

Parent Line counsellors are on call 24/7 to discuss any issues that relate to your family, there is also information on our website www.parentline.org.au.1300 1300 52
