WELCOME MESSAGEDear Leadership Expedition Attendees,
On behalf of Commerce Lexington Inc., Greater Louisville Inc., and our presenting sponsors
Chase/J.P. Morgan and LG&E/KU, we would like to thank you for participating in our joint
Leadership Expedition to Charlotte, North Carolina. We are proud and excited to be leading
this trip, and we’re certain that you’ll find it to be a valuable experience.
Charlotte is not only known as one of the most vibrant cities in the nation, but is also among
the best cities for jobs, business, affordability, entrepreneurial activity, homeownership, small
businesses, and more. While Charlotte has the second-largest banking center in the U.S.,
its manufacturing, healthcare and energy industries are key components of the economy.
Charlotte is also a national leader in workforce development and educational attainment,
and has been able to leverage its talent in creating a high quality of place and a region that’s
“on the move.”
While we can certainly learn a lot from Charlotte’s successes and challenges, we can also learn
a lot from each other – just as we did during the 2010 joint trip to Pittsburgh. That dialogue
not only created more awareness about how our two cities were already working together,
but also emphasized the importance of regional collaboration for global competitiveness.
We hope that during this trip you’ll be able to renew connections from Pittsburgh, meet new
colleagues, and discuss what others are doing to enhance the future of our communities and
our Commonwealth. By working together, we can continue to encourage broader statewide
thinking, generate more breakthrough ideas, and better collaborate on issues of mutual
benefit.
We look forward to meeting and talking with all of you during this trip.
Sincerely,
Ken Sagan, co-chair

Commerce Lexington Inc. has led its own intercity visits for 74 years, while Greater Louisville Inc.’s GLIDE trip has been occurring each year since 1985. The Leadership Visit/GLIDE trips encompass big ideas, strategies and partnerships. This joint Leadership Expedition is designed as a learning opportunity for community leaders to study other cities and to apply the best of what they see and hear to their own metro area. The group also examines some of the challenges they face, what is working well at home, and ways to collaborate and improve across the region.

Bluegrass Economic Advancement Movement One key takeaway from the trip was to strengthen the Advantage KY Partnership. Following this trip the Bluegrass Economic Advancement Movement (BEAM) was launched by Mayor Greg Fischer and Mayor Jim Gray of Lexington in 2011. Bringing together the 22 counties that include and surround Lexington and Louisville, this strategic partnership implements a regional economic development approach for the state’s two largest metropolitan areas.
BEAM seeks to build on the region’s existing strengths of robust manufacturing and innovation. Working together, our two metropolitan areas can foster increased growth in manufacturing and strengthen the foundation of a prosperous future for companies, employees, and entrepreneurs.
Local Option Sales Tax and Strengthen Metro Chamber CoalitionThe number one take away from the 2010 joint trip was the agreement to pursue the passage of a local option sales tax. This was the first step in establishing LIFT – Local Investments For Transformation – a state-wide coalition to pass an amendment to Kentucky’s Constitution that would allow citizens to vote on a one penny additional local sales tax dedicated to the funding of local projects, which would be removed once the projects are paid for. This collaborative effort will continue with the 2015 Kentucky Legislative session and a push to get the issue on the ballot in 2016.
Continue Collaboration Between ChambersCommerce Lexington Inc. and Greater Louisville Inc. have worked closely together for years in economic development, public policy, and regional marketing. Most recent economic development projects include the ongoing Bluegrass Economic Advancement Movement and the Kentucky Export Initiative. The 2014 joint Leadership Expedition to Charlotte will provide the opportunity to expand and heighten the strong collaboration between the two cities, which will further strengthen the region and the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
