Wendy Hilliard Foundation Serving Inner City Youth Through The Sport Of Gymnastics

Dear Friends:

Welcome to the WHF Yearbook 2013-2014! It has been another year full of excitement, growth, more students, more work and more fun!

Our partnership with the Harlem Children’s Zone has provided the Harlem Community with outstanding gymnastics opportunities unmatched in New York City. In addition to teaching gymnastics to hundreds of HCZ students, HCZ provides free gymnastics classes for the surrounding Harlem community for ages 18 months to adults. Our competitive gymnastics team program continues to improve with more gymnasts qualifying to state and national level championships. The HCZ Armory also hosted the Right to Play Gymnastics Festival. Gabby Douglas, her Mom, Natalie Hawkins, Coach Bela Karolyi and many other champion gymnasts attended this great event!

Another valuable WHF partner is Riverbank State Park, home to our Saturday Community Gymnastics Program and special events including our Showcase Gala, Harlem Gymnastics Day and Olympic Day celebrations. Our Community classes continue to grow in popularity and this year, the waiting list has exceeded 100 hopeful participants.

This year we launched the Harlem Gymnastics Invitational “HGI” at the HCZ Armory. Over 500 participants and more than 1200 visitors had a wonderful time! For two days there was competition in rhythmic, artistic tumbling and trampoline gymnastics. Athletes from four states enjoyed the festive atmosphere and the event concluded with Showtime in Harlem - a fun performance event for the WHF students and guests.

Our second annual fundraising event was held in April at the New York Athletic Club. Our honorees: Jay Kriegel, Audrey Smaltz, Gail Marquis and Rose Voisk and MC, Maurice Du Bois were all magnificent. THE WHF Team performance wowed the crowed and it was a super successful event. Thank you to our wonderful Benefit Committee.

The work we do requires extensive fundraising efforts and support. The WHF Board of Directors has always provided that support and are excited about the future growth of the Foundation and all of our programs. We also want to thank the many sponsors, funders and donors who believe in what we do and provide the funding to make it happen. GK provided the spectacular team uniforms this year.

The WHF would not be able to do what we do without remarkable, talented, accomplished and dedicated staff members. I am so proud that day in and day out the WHF staff instills discipline, skills and joy to hundreds of young children. From the beginner to the very competitive athletes, it is about teaching the proper progression of gymnastics technique that provides a safe, enjoyable and empowering sports experience. We then add a dash of soul, music, dance and spirit, “cause that is how we roll uptown at the WHF.”

To our wonderful WHF parents: Thank you for your support! You were superstar volunteers at the HGI and again for the class photos, special events and wherever we needed help!

--Finally, to the WHF and HCZ Gymnastics students and Gymnastics Teams - you for bringing such joy to all of us. We love what we do because you have such enthusiasm about learning gymnastics. You always challenge us- never a dull day at the gym! We laugh, we push, we dance, we stretch - and yes, sometimes it is tough- but always worth it! We are so proud of you!

“Whether tumbling, jumping or tossing a ribbon through the air, gymnastics gives children the freedom to fly.”

I am the lucky and proud parent of a Wendy Hilliard gymnast and am so grateful to the Wendy Hilliard Foundation for its mission to support urban youth in their quest to learn the sport of gymnastics! Each week, the gymnasts are taught volumes about sportsmanship, engaged in a level of physical activity, in the height of an obesity epidemic among African American and Latino youth, and are drilled with the foundational principles of gymnastic techniques.

Ms. Hilliard’s staff has always demonstrated a patience to nurture and love all WHF gymnasts, while being firm enough to maximize their potentials and see them grow and learn increasingly difficult techniques. From the very beginning, the WHF staff has treated Delilah, in spite of her autism, like every other gymnast and has had the same high expectations of her, which makes her want to excel in learning how to be a better gymnast.

Over the past three years, every staff member, individually and collectively, have diligently taught Lilah all of the gymnastics techniques that she knows, has videotaped gymnastic routines to facilitate her learning them, and volunteered time to teach me how to better improve Lilah's ability to be flexible, build her upper body strength and do cartwheels, as well as attempt back-bends and bridges. (We are still working on the latter.) This is a true testament to their character, professionalism and work ethic, as I have seen each Saturday, when Delilah and I have come to Riverbank State Park for practice. It is very evident that these children would not be who and where they are without the help of the wonderful staff at the foundation.

The WHF, through its many programs and financial assistance, is giving these youth a wonderful opportunity to excel and move beyond the communities from which they have come. I am so proud that Lilah and I joined the WHF and are considered part of the family. Lilah and the other Wendy Hilliard students are being given tools for greatness and are becoming just that, great. I do and would recommend this gymnastics foundation to all who are looking for a gymnastic program; it is accessible, affordable and simply the best.

Congratulations to Ms. Wendy Hilliard and Staff for another wonderful and successful year.

Love your family,

Melissa & Delilah Barber

The Wendy Hilliard Foundation A legacy of serving inner city youth through the sport of gymnastics

Founded in 1996 by Hall of Fame rhythmic gymnast, Wendy Hilliard, the Wendy Hilliard Foundation “WHF” was formed to provide free and low cost gymnastics for youth. Wendy was inspired to begin the foundation after training her athlete, Aliane Baquerot, for the 1996 Olympics. The goal was to provide children with the opportunity that Wendy had in gymnastics. In the 80’s the City of Detroit Recreation Department hired four gymnastics coaches from the former Soviet Union. Lead by Drs. Vladimir and Zina Mirinov; the Detroit Metro Gymnastics Team produced Olympians, National Champions and numerous US National Gymnastics Team members. As the Captain of the Detroit Metro Gymnasts, Wendy travelled the world and was the first African American to represent the United States Rhythmic Gymnastics. The WHF is an exceptional youth development organization. It has served over 10,000 inner-city youth to date. The WHF has trained top elite athletes and international gymnastics performers. Brenda Jones, WHF Director of Administration 1995-2006, was instrumental to the development of the WHF. The diversity of the WHF staff is unique to the sport of gymnastics, but they are all highly qualified gymnastics instructors with incredible resumes achievement in sport. New York City has provided the opportunity for the WHF students to perform on some of the world’s greatest stages including, Madison Square Garden and Lincoln Center. The Board of the WHF provides funding, services and planning. Funding for the WHF programs is a mix of public, private foundations, educational and corporate grants and individual donations. In 1997, the WHF began developing partnerships with local organizations such as; the Dance Theatre of Harlem, the Police Athletic League, and the Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation. In 1999, linkages were developed to provide health, nutrition, pregnancy prevention and sports medicine services with the New York Presbyterian Hospital and St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital, and the Women’s Sports Medicine Center, the health sponsor for the WHF competitive teams and special events. In 2004, the WHF began reading programs through Literacy Inc. These programs re-enforce the discipline and structure from gymnastics to school work and overall good health. In July 2000, Random House published a book by photographer, Jane Feldman, “I am a Gymnast” that featured WHF team member, McKenzie Foster. In 2001, the WHF Team participated in a student-exchange program with an elite rhythmic club from Southampton, England. Alexis Page age 17, started with the WHF at age 7. She became a three time USA Gymnastics National Team Member and National and International Gold medalist. In 2008, Team Alexis was formed to provide funding for her international trips and training. In fall 2013, Alexis will attend Howard University as a dance major. The Free WHF Summer Gymnastics program began in 1996 with over 700 youth from the NYC Housing Authority. At the conclusion of the program, the students participated in a free performance for the community. For over ten years the WHF Gymnastics Galas have featured a host of Olympic and champion gymnasts, coaches and Broadway performers that perform alongside the children of the program; including Olympic Gold Medalists, Dominique Dawes and Shannon Miller, members of the renowned Anti-Gravity gymnastics company, legendary coach Bela Karolyi and 11 time world champion tumbler Rayshine Harris. The WHF also hosts special events for the community including: the NYC Gymnastics Championships, Harlem Gymnastics Day, Harlem Girls and Women in Sports Day and Olympic Day celebrations. Over the years, WHF programs have included cheerleading and gymnastics for seniors and persons with special needs. In 2010, the Wendy Hilliard Foundation began a partnership with the Harlem Children’s Zone. Located at the Harlem Armory, the WHF serves over 800 HCZ students per month. The WHF Team program trains at this outstanding facility which is outfitted with new state of the art gymnastics equipment. In 2012 the HCZ began offering Mommy and me classes to the community taught by WHF staff. Wendy Hilliard’s goal was to create a program that provided an opportunity for more minorities to experience her sport. After serving over 10,000 participants, the Wendy Hilliard Foundation has established an incredible track record of providing quality programming for people of all ages and abilities in the sport of gymnastics.
