QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER | Apr-Jun 2017 3
April is Alcohol Awareness Month!
“…With this year’s theme, “Connecting the Dots: Opportunities for Recovery,” the month of April will be
filled with local, state, and national events aimed at educating people about the prevention and treatment
of alcoholism…”
“Alcohol and drug use by young people is extremely dangerous and is directly associated with traffic
fatalities, violence, suicide, alcohol overdose, unsafe sex and other problem behaviors, even for those who
may never develop a dependence or addiction. Adolescence is a time of heightened risk-taking and as
alcohol and drugs enter the picture, parents are faced with a unique set of challenges. They can simply sit
back and hope their kids will “get through it,” or they can take an active role in helping their kids connect
the dots about alcohol and drug use.”
“An integral part of Alcohol Awareness Month is Alcohol-Free Weekend (which is officially designated
March 31-April 2, 2017, but can be utilized any weekend during the month of April), is designed to raise
public awareness about the use of alcohol and how it may be affecting individuals, families, and the
community…”

“IF YOU CARE ABOUT…”
5C Coalition and MFL MarMac SODA
went to Iowa Capitol for Substance
Abuse Prevention Day on the Hill.
On Thursday, February 23rd, youth
from around the state joined the
Alliance of Coalitions for Change
(AC4C) to discuss their concerns
about youth marijuana use and
substance use in Iowa. AC4C is a
state-wide collaboration to effect
positive change in substance abuse.
Students and adults came together to
educate their legislators about the
impact marijuana has on them, their
peers and their community.
Approximately 150 students and
adults from many community
coalitions, representing a mixture of
Iowa’s rural and urban populations
attended this event. Students and
adults had an opportunity to speak
with their representatives about
substance abuse issues and share
what they hear and see locally. 5C is
a county wide coalition who want to
make a difference through initiatives
and education to address substance
abuse in Clayton County.
