Summer 2010 Program Offerings

Feel the SteelRISING GRADE 3 THROUGH ADULT: Students will learn to play in an au-thentic “Caribbean Steel Orchestra”. No musical training is required as the pan is uniquely different from most conventional instruments. Ellie Man-nette, one of the major inventors of the Steel Drum, has taught, trained, and furnished our studio with this magnifi-cent instrument. Mr. Rudolph will have

students playing songs like Day-O and Tequila in the very first lesson. This is a great opportunity for families who want to do something together where everyone begins on the same level. We must warn parents that children catch on quite easily so be prepared to defend your musical honor.

Mallet MadnessRISING GRADE 1 TO ADULT: Marim-bas, the focus of our mallet madness for the summer, are large wooden xylophone-like instruments made with hand-cut wood mounted over resonat-ing tubes. Our ensemble will consist of soprano, tenor, baritone and deep basses! We start with African music whose repeating patterns produce

melodies and rhythms that are easy to learn and fun to play. Drums, and shakers are added which work together to pro-duce high energy music. By the end of the first class, students are playing a song together! The basics are easy to learn as the notes are large and played with one mallet in each hand. We focus on rhythm, listening skills and ensemble playing. Later we cover Latin American music as well as pop and rock tunes. Become aware of cultures from around the globe!

Hawaiian UkuleleRISING GRADE 2 THROUGH ADULT: Thought you could never play anything but a radio? The ukulele is one of the easiest string instruments to learn, even if you have never played an instru-ment you’ll leave the first class playing a song. (and loving it!) You’ll learn Ha-waiian tunes and more, as songs are taught through visual example as par-

ticipants watch and then imitate. The ukulele is having a come-back throughout the country, and you’ll see why. Plan to play for a fall beach bonfire - ALOHA!! Check out a video link on our website. It’s easy to learn to strum.

World PercussionRISING GRADE 5 THROUGH ADULT: Students by the end of the summer will have a firm foundation in percussion technologies from around the world. Usually this type of class is found only at universities, but Quest has adapted it for the Roanoke Valley. Our studio will be full of instruments from Japan, Africa,

Latin America and the United States. Djembies, Dun Duns, Tai-ko Drums, Timbales, Congas, and of course the drum set will be taught to these lucky participants. Any student involved in music should take this class and learn the rhythms of Calypso, Samba, African and good old fashioned rock and roll.

.

Intro to TaikoRISING GRADE 2 TO ADULT: Combine martial arts with drumming and you have the national music of Japan! Students will learn history, culture and techniques of Taiko as they prepare fundamental drum routines. Taiko is easily attainable to those who think of themselves as not so rhythmically coordinated.

Pan JumbieRISING GRADES 1 AND 2: This class in-troduces younger children to the exciting world of Caribbean Steel Drum Music. The Pan Jumbie is a smaller and uniquely colored “youth friendly” steel drum which consists of notes for both melody and rhythm strumming similar to the exciting pans used in “Feel The Steel”.

Beginning PianoRISING GRADE 1 TO ADULT: “The ul-timate musical teaching tool.” Piano promotes reading, counting, audible skills, and fine motor dexterity. Electric pianos and synthesizers offer creativity and have become a necessity in many theaters, churches and performance venues. Take the opportunity to experi-ence this wonderful instrument.

Beginning GuitarRISING GRADES 5 THROUGH ADULT: Learn to strum major and minor chords in a recreational style. By the end of the summer you will be playing “Eight Days a Week” by the Beatles, “Amazing Love” by The Newsboys and “Happy Birthday” in three different keys by Delilah Ru-dolph.

Band AidRISING GRADES 5 THROUGH ADULT: Believe it or not, Mr Rudolph was a “Band Director” for 10 years before opening his own private studio! Band Aid is designed specifically for individu-als anticipating participation in their school bands this fall. Course includes: selection of an instrument, care & as-sembly, beginning playing techniques,

and introduction to standard method books used in surround-ing school systems. Mr. Rudolph will be glad to answer ques-tions about renting an instrument for this class.

Summer 2010 Program Offerings

Music QuestThis has been one of our most popular and effective programs for almost 15 years! Each Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon, your child can explore different areas of music study. Piano, guitar, ukelele, percussion, steel drums, and even band instruments. Students can spend the whole summer deciding what their interests are, and discovering hidden talents to lay the foundation for continued study. Because of the long summer, students can easily absorb instruction and can work around family vacations. There are two tracks for age consideration, so that older and younger students can participate at the same time. You choose what day they come, with the flexibility to change whenever your scheule demands it. Parents have thanked us every year for this wonderful opportunity.

Have Children? Interested in Music? Unsure what to do?

Intro to Broadway DanceRISING GRADES 5 THROUGH ADULT: There is nothing quite like the excitement of dancers on stage in a Broadway musical. Launch out to a new experience in a relaxed atmo-sphere where everyone is a beginner and can test the waters of their cre-ativity. No former dance instruction is

required. Andrea Rodgers: instructor.

Praise & Worship ClassMiddle School, High School and adult students will learn the basics of preparing a praise and worship service. Compo-nents include vocalists and drummers: guitar, bass, synthe-sizer along with auxiliary instruments. Singers are encour-aged to lead the worship. Instrumentalists must call Delilah if you have any questions about this class.

Intro to African DanceRISING GRADES 5 THROUGH ADULT: This is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge of dance. Quest Acad-emy has formed an African Drum and Marimba Ensemble and hopes to include dancers. Schools and colleges through-

out the United States are offering this addition to their music programs. No former dance instruction is required. Andrea Rodgers: instructor.

Intro toCaribbean DanceRISING GRADES 5 THROUGH ADULT: Andrea Rodgers, dance instructor, has been playing Caribbean Steel Drums since elementary school. She is a gold medal pan player and understands the “rhythm of the islands”. Have fun in this

low “Key West” class. No former dance instruction is required.
