Q1- In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge

forms and conventions of real media products?

Page 2: Question 1

Similarities with VINYL and other magazines•In all the magazines, there is direct address where all the members are looking straight at the camera. There isn't any flashy pictures however they all clearly show the genre of the music magazine. • This is not an R&B or POP magazine therefore there are no ‘revealing’ or ‘sexy’ pictures. These pictures look more serious which again can link to the genre of their music; INDIE/ROCK. •They all have barcodes as a typical convention; In the NME magazine, similar to my magazine, the website has their magazine name in the colour to allow the magazine to promote itself and stand out more. •In all magazines there are atleast 4 colours used, quite simple however all indicate something. In my magazine the use of 3 colours is conventional similar to the kerrang magazine. • There are not many cover lines used in all magazines. There is more than one image on all the magazines and this can show a more visual look. • From all the magazines, we can see they target a specific audience group; Teenagers/young adults. We can see this via the colours, fonts and people used in the cover. •They all have some sort of freebies which attracts the audience to buy the magazine.

Differences of VINYL with other magazines

• These magazines tend to go against my type of magazine because;- They specialise in a different genre; R&B whereas Vinyl specialises in Indie/ Rock music.- The artists are dressed in a more exposing way however are dressed in a way which connotes their genre. - All artists cover the magazine logo- There are many different fonts used which makes the cover look less organised- The blender magazine doesn't have an barcode whereas VINYL does.

Comparisons Both magazines specialise in indie genres however there are many differences between my product and ‘NME’. Firstly the background in ‘NME’ is white which can connote unity and cohesion whereas Vinyl is a gradient of grey and black which can show a more serious tone.

Props & Mise En scene- There are many ethnicities shown in the NME page where it does show some typical stereotypes as the teenagers are wearing casual clothing. Whereas in VINYL, they all look more like a band, due to the colour scheme; The boys are wearing leather jackets and jeans.

The images and fonts used in ‘NME’ is eye catching due to the bold font and bright colours. The masthead is the only part of the magazine in which the colour red is used which can make the magazine name stand out and be publicised due to the bold colour. This can represent passion, prosperity or danger. Whereas in VINYL, the image used focuses the audiences attention on the main image. The mast head is red and bold which can also be seen as eye catching. The font varies in NME whereas in VINYL the fonts are pretty much the same which can show things are more organised and structured to look at.

Page 6: Question 1

• A floating quote is shown in both of these double page spreads. This is usually used in most magazines. This can allow the reader to be interested in a specific point of the article and by reading just this one quote it may encourage them to read on. This can give an insight to the band/persons personal life.

THE MASTHEAD

• I think all these mastheads have their own style. For example for my masthead; VINYL there is a strong black border and the font is 3D. This makes it stand out and also the colour is very eye catching. Whereas the ‘Down beat’ logo is very boring and simple and doesn't grab the audiences attention very much. My font used in ‘VINYL’ is impact in which I added an border and made it 3D so it would stand out. The fonts above are written in capital letters and this allows the masthead to seem significant in the magazine and allows it to stand out. The colour used on my masthead; Red and black are colours which go very well with each other. The colour can also target males and females.

Page 8: Question 1

The cover lines

I think my cover line is quite successful because it stands out and is quite eye catching. Whereas the ‘NME’ magazine doesn't really have a big sell line in comparison to VINYL.

This sell line, is proportional in size to the masthead unlike the one in my magazine.

Page 9: Question 1

• These content pages show some typical conventions. For example VINYL has a features and a Regular section. This NME magazine helped me create my contents page. They are both structured and easy to read. However what makes my magazine unique is that it has an editorial and the magazines name in the contents point to reinforce the point again.

• In my contents, I used 3 images and information, I done this to balance out the visual and textual look. The editorial can be seen as conventional and that is why I used it in my magazine. I placed page numbers on the pictures to inform the audience where they can get specific information.

LANGUAGE • Brady McCutcheon: “Hmm that’s a

tricky question. Me and Matt spoke about this the other day and let’s say with a few disagreements (laughs) our favourite track would have to be ‘Human’ “Well no, I disagree with that dudes, It’s all about ‘One more time’. “You only like that one the most because you wrote it”.

• Trupti: (Laughs) Ooo Brady, the new member who everyone is talking about, how does it feel to be part of ULTRAVIOLET? What happened and why did you become this new member?

When interviewing in my double page spread, I decided to use some actions such as laughter and thoughts. This can allow the audience to relate to the article more as if they are watching the interview ‘live’.
