Question 2

Section 2

Print Production

Layout

I used the convention of the 4 panel layout for my Digipak. An example of this is The Black keys – Lonely boy album.

I used this convention because I think it is an effective way to present the themes used throughout my productions.

Panel 1 I used the convention of a sans-serif font, I used this as it is modern

looking, this means it relates to the problems with modern society, which also relates to the themes of the migrant crisis expressed in my production.

This is a common convention seen throughout Alternative, singer/songwriter music. For example; Adele - 21 and Joni Mitchel – clouds

Another convention I used was the convention of natural, outside imagery. The image of the mirror outside (seen in the music video) adds the sense of being cold, outside and lonely.

I also used the convention of the artists name being the largest text on the cover.

Panels 2 & 3 For the inside I chose to use a single image stretched across both

panels, this is a common feature in all Digipak albums. For example; the black keys Chulahoma and Ravi Shankar at Woodstock.

I used this convention to create an emptiness but also to create a connection to the energy of live music. The convention is very common with this genre.

The use of the artists name repeated on these panels in the same font as the front cover reinforces the artists brand and image. The use of black and white also adds to this branding.

I used ambient light to create an organic and natural feel to the image.

CD Print

I chose to use the convention of printing an image onto the CD. My decision to use the same image as the poster was to further reinforce this image and the brand of Caleb J. Rowan. The image also develops the emotions of the girl in the video; for example the image enforces feelings of loneliness and despair, the development of these conventions promotes the themes of my production.

The use of the flower symbolises her lack of hope, she is crushing it in her hand which is a metaphor for her country and the conflict within it crushing her hope, but also the lack of empathy from Britain to her and her people.

Panel 4 I used the convention of a track list on the back cover of my Digipak, this

convention is very common and is used on almost all albums in all formats.

I continued the themes of emptiness and negative space to emphasise the themes and feelings created in the music video and in my other panels. I edited the image to remove the background to create this theme of negative space. The blackness and darkness of the background makes the setting feel cold and bleak which is reinforced by the lack of colour.

I used a minimalist serif font for the track list to create a sophistication to the back panel, this makes it feel more professional. Although it is different to the sans serif font of the Artist name which is repeated throughout the print production and music video, it does fit with the product and is the same font used for the album name and on the poster.

Magazine advert / poster

The main convention of magazine adverts are for the name of the artist to be the biggest typeface and to standout, my advert follows this convention. I also used a black background to make this white text stand out even further. This convention also reinforces the brand image of Caleb J. Rowan.

The magazine looks professional and sophisticated, this makes peoples pay more attention to it and remember it because they do not think its just another amateur musician. This means the poster/advert will be effective in promoting the artist and album.

The use of black and white is a theme used throughout my productions, this is a kind of brand image for the artist, the use of colour is a simple representation of love and happiness (the flower) the fact she is crushing this in her hand shows she does not believe in herself, she has a lack of hope. I used this same colour sample throughout my panels to reinforce this theme and emotion.
