Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target audience for my film is teenagers between the age of 12 and 18. This means that the audience can relate to the characters in the film and feel like part of the group. Older people may also enjoy my film but it may not be appropriate for younger people due to the small amounts of threat and violence. Minor Evolution follows the common audience of a superhero film.

Target Audience Avatar:

He wears expensive headphones and listens to fast heavy music because he is young and has a quick mind. He would also watch a lot of modern Sci-Fi TV and Films such as X-men, Star Trek and Chronicle. The target audience would also play a lot of violent video games such as Halo and Call of Duty on a next generation games console. He keeps up to date with modern technology and spends a lot of his time alone socialising through online media. He spends a lot of time being lazy and lying around and wears a comfortable hoody and jeans. However he also wears a sport cap which wears to look cool and hide his laziness. His phone is new and keeps him in contact with his friends and social media such as Facebook and Twitter. There is a backpack that he wears to school as he is a young teenager and is still in education.

Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?

In order to attract my target audience I have included a large amount of exciting and intense visual effects. This was important as it is expected of an action superhero film as well as plenty of action sequences and tension. The target audiences age is between 12 and 18 who tend to be more interested in violence and visually creative scenes and therefore I tried to include as much of this as possible. I included a vast amount of sparks and flashes of light as the characters used their powers as well as including a 3D slow motion bullet scene.

I decided to show my film to my colleagues who are of the same age as my target audience and would be the perfect group to receive feedback from. The audience fully enjoyed the use of “sweet” effects and said the title intro was “insane” and felt as if they were watching a high budget film. Overall the response for the film was overwhelmingly positive with very few minor ways to improve which involved heightening the volume of voices and sound effects. I can therefore say that the use of effects and editing skills ensured that the target audience would enjoy my film.

I believe that the audience also enjoyed the film because of the characters’ age. Both target audience and characters are of of teenage years which makes the viewer feel like part of the group and gives them a sense of belonging. This also creates an attachment between them and therefore audience will immediately take the side of the main characters.

Another method of attracting the target audience was by adding a dramatic ending. I made sure to chose actors with drama experience and got the one with most experience to do the final shot which would ultimately be the part of the film most people remembered. I found a clear shot of the sky and had a low angle shot of him bending over the camera. This shot shows this characters decent into “darkness” or becoming “evil” which is an extremly common theme found in Sci-Fi and Superhero films such as “Chronicle”. With a slow zoom into the character’s face and the use of an increasing drum beat soundtrack, I created a tense and memorable ending that excited and gave the audience chills. As mentioned before this would be the part of the film most would remember and therefore giving the audience a great ending would leave them with a positive feeling about the film.

In summary in order to reach my target audience I used special effects, proffesional title sequences, relatable characters and a dramatic ending. These methods have also been proven successful by the huge positivity from my couleagues who also match the characteristics of the target audience.
