Page 2: Question 4 - Target Audience

TARGET AUDIENCE – YOUNG ADULTSOur target audience is mainly young adults (mostly men).

We aimed our film at older audience members (young adults – as opposed to children) as it includes quite a large amount of violence and confusing plots (not suitable for children) and lots of elements of the film will only be able to be understood by young adults (such as the ‘game complete’ part of the opening).

Our target audience is people who are very involved with digital technology. We mostly set out to appeal to men in our film, however our film could appeal to women in some ways.

Our film is mainly aimed at the ages 16-35, however men older than this may enjoy the film, as they may be drawn in and interested by the action conventions or perhaps even just because they enjoy thriller films.

TARGET AUDIENCE – YOUNG ADULTSWe chose young adults to be our target audience for a number of different reasons.• Young adults are involved in gaming and so will understand the concept of the video

game in the film and may enjoy the film• The young actors may be relatable for them• The use of various action conventions draw the audience in as stereotypically, young

adult men are interested in guns, action and violence in films• Stereotypically, young men are interested in guns, cars and gaming so this film would

appeal to them (as it includes all three)• Women may be interested in the film, as, although they won’t enjoy the blood and

gore, and won’t be too worried about the action; but they may feel attracted to the actors

NOT THE TARGET AUDIENCE!

Old people are definitely not our target audience. This is because the ‘game’ sequence may be far too complex and violent for them, and they may feel worried or intimidated by the young men in the film being very powerful and dominant. The film also may be too complicated for them to understand fully, therefore they wouldn’t enjoy it because they wouldn’t be able to follow the narrative.

Also, children are definitely not our target audience, as the film would be far too violent for them (as it includes blood and guns) and also the film would be too confusing for them to understand, so they could not follow the plot and wouldn’t enjoy the film.

RESEARCHWe did some audience research before creating our thriller film to find out who our main audience could be. From doing this, we found that the majority of our audience were in the age range up to 24, so this is why we chose to target young adults.

Although from our research we gathered information from mainly women, we still chose to aim our film at men as they would make a better target audience for the ideas we had (based around gaming and violence).

We also did some research into the type of people that we wanted to aim our film at, and we decided on mainstreamers, as they are a large segment of the audience and they have a large impact on the spending in the media market.

We also found from our audience research that most of our audience either consume media via online sources (such as Netflix) or on the TV. Therefore, were we to distribute our film, we would primarily distribute it online, as this would be where the biggest audience that we are trageting would be. (When publishing our draft, we posted it on YouTube as this would be an accessible place for our audience to view the film. As well as this, we shared the video on Facebook, as this would the the type of media which our target audience would use and so this would be a good place to attract them).
