&How did you attract/address your audience?

TARGET AUDIENCEMy target audience for my magazine are:Both male and femaleListen to indie/pop/rock Interest in technologyAge 16-25

By making a focus group I was able to represent my target audience and confer key features of my magazine with them, helping me make decisions and give useful feedback throughout the production process of my magazine. This encouraged me to understand what my target audience would want from a music magazine.

Attracting my audience- Front CoverAs my front cover is a subscribers edition (similar to clash magazine that is published 10 times a year), the promotion of insiders etc. isn’t as extreme as the audience has already bought the magazine. However, I still wanted the cover to be striking and entice my audience, which is why I used an image using direct mode of address to gain eye contact with the audience and create a feeling of a personal relationship with the artist (uses & grats). This would be appealing to both a male and female audience as she is seen as a subject and not an object, as the image isn’t provocative in any way, but quite neutral (which would be the preferred reading of my cover.)I used the mast head adjoined with the anchor text to create hermeneutic questions, enticing the reader and features such as the plus sign to encourage interaction within the magazine to see what else is inside.

Attracting my target audience- Contents Page

This section of my magazine is set to engage my audience with the magazine, using social media links to connect each media platform with the target audience between issues. Because of my magazines age range, this would be a beneficial way to gain audience interaction.

The separate sections of ‘special features’ and ‘regulars’ creates easy navigation for the audience, therefore attracting young adults and appealing to both regular readers and new issue buyers.

This section also encourages audiences to engage with the magazine in between issues by the idea of competition. Using the buzzwords ‘free’ and ‘win’ entices the reader and makes them think they will get more from the magazine than expected. The barcode and the word ‘just’ makes it seem simplistic and easy to get in touch with the magazine, but also uses media convergence to join digital media with print- appealing to my tech savvy audience.

Attracting my audience- Double Page Spread

Using a pull quote creates hermeneutic questions and entices the audience to want to read the article.

I made the artist name the boldest writing on the page in san-serif font (capitalised) which immediately catches the readers attention- especially those of the artists fan base.

Lastly I used a bold and eye catching image which covers both pages of the spread- purposefully using direct mode of address to create a personal relationship with the audience.

Attracting my target audience- House Style

• The target audience of my magazine consists of both males and females so I wanted to express that In my magazine. I tried to appeal to both genders within the house style of my magazine by avoiding using gender specific colours, but using gender neutral ones instead such as light blue, grey, white and black. This creates more delicate style to most magazines I researched which were commonly red and black.

• This encourages a preferred reception (reception theory) and enables my audience to relate to the artists in the magazine, creating a potentially loyal fan base.
