A LETTER FROM CHRISTY Hello everyone! Fall is coming and that means back-to-school, football games, homework, dance lessons, Christmas and

cooler weather! Maybe that is just my crazy life, but that’s how it is organized. This quarter is always a busy one with classes and people trying to finish up projects for gift-giving. BERNINA

BERNINA Stitch Regulator Now freemotion stitching is easier than ever! ...When using the BERNINA® Stitch Regulator (BSR) acces-sory, the speed of the stitching adjusts to coordinate with the movement of the fabric, aiding in the production of consis-tent, regular stitches. All you have to do is lower the feed dogs and move the fabric. The BERNINA® Stitch Regulator, with two stitching modes, is standard on the aurora 440E QE. The BSR offers regulated, even stitches, no matter the speed or direction in which the fabric is moved. A “beep” signals if the fabric is moved too quickly. The BSR operates with a camera-like sensor that reads the fabric through an optical lens in the foot. The sensor “looks” at the fabric, senses the movement, and calculates the dis-tance – then directs the needle to stitch depending on the se-lected stitch length setting. For example, if the stitch length is set at 2.5mm, the sensor calculates the distance and stitch frequency, repeating stitches with regular precision regard-less of the speed at which the fabric is moved. The BSR works on fabrics with a variety of surface tex-tures – including velvet, lame, fleece, corduroy, and denim – making it perfect for a wide range of quilting applications. The BERNINA® Stitch Regulator is constructed with the famous BERNINA® hopper mechanism – as are all BERN-INA® free-motion presser feet – ensuring precision stitching. When the needle enters the fabric, the free-motion sole moves upward; as the needle leaves the fabric, the sole is lowered so that the fabric is not raised with the needle, this preventing flagging and uneven stitches. Three soles are included with the BSR to handle all of your free-motion stitching needs:

Closed Metal Sole – Similar to Darning Foot #9, with the needle centered and visible

Open Metal Sole – Like Free-motion Embroidery Foot #24, this sole gives an optimal view of the needle

Transparent Sole – Glides easily over all fabrics – includ-ing layers of batting – in every direction. Marked with cross-hairs for easy visualization of the needle position; great for outline and echo quilting. Excerpted from The NEW Quilting With BERNINA® book.

Bernina Stitch Regulator Available for Artista 200 in Fall You will want to get your name on the list for the new hardware upgrade that will give you all the advantages in the previous article. This will be an up-grade so there will be a cost for you to be able to have “regulated, even stitches, no matter the speed or direc-tion in which the fabric is moved.”

PREVIOUSLY LOVED SEWING MACHINES CRYING FOR ADOPTION You will want to check out the used sewing and embroidery machines that have been traded in for

PLEASE ADOPT ME. I NEED A HOME!

Hoop-It-All Products for Bernina Machines

You can now go past the traditional boundaries of your BERNINA embroidery machine with the new hoops from Hoop-It-All. Large designs can be stitched in two, three or four different sections, de-pending on the hoop that you use, by rotating the hoop for each stitching. Hoops come in kits with tables or as “frame only”. Your first hoop must come in a kit so that you have the necessary table for support. Hoops are available for the Artista 200, 200E, 185, 185E, 180E, 170E, 165E and the Deco 330. Now there is no reason to be limited to smaller designs or multiple hooping!.

MEET OUR FEATURED TEACHER FOR FALL MERRY THOMPSON

Merry Thompson is a first year teacher here at Quilt’n Stitch, but she is far from a first year sewing teacher! Merry has taught Consumer Sciences (Home Economics) at West Monroe High School for the last 18 years. Prior to that she taught at St. Frederick’s and

Caldwell Parish High Schools. Love for sewing developed for Merry when she was a young child. It has never changed. For years she made pri-marily clothing, but she has been really surprised at how much she has enjoyed machine embroidery since she bought her BERNINA 200E. And Merry began quilting just three years ago and loves it (and turns out some really gorgeous ones, too!) She is the wife of Lamar “Tommy” Thompson. They have two grown sons. Merry is a graduate of ULM with both a B.S. and M.Ed. She belongs to two quilt guilds: Quilts Needle Love (Gulf States Quilting Association) and the North Louisiana Quilters’ Association.

Top 12 Reasons BERNINA Excels in Quilting according to Diane

Gaudynski 1. BERNINA stitch regulator 2. Design of the freemotion presser foot 3. Adjustable tension 4. FHS—Free Hand System 5. Electronic foot control 6. Motor speed adjustment 7. Penetrating power of the DC motor 8. Needle stop down feature 9. Adjustable presser foot pressure 10. Magnifying lenses 11. CFL light 12. Touch Screen

A BERNINA SPRAY TIP When hooping fabric and stabilizer, always use a temporary spray adhesive such as HR5 to bond them together to elimi-nate shifting during the hooping process. Spray the surface of the stabilizer (not the fabric), then place the fabric right side down, smoothing it in place. Treat the well-bonded pieces as one.

Friendships are sewn one stitch at a time. You will reap what you sew!

CLUBS CLUBS ETC. RED HAT

SEW’N SEWS CLUB If you are over 50, love to sew, love to have fun, and love to eat out, this is the group for you! We will meet the third Wednesday at 9 am to sew/quilt /embroider. Then we will go to eat in one of our good restaurants in the Monroe-West Monroe area to continue our conversation and laughter and to eat. Ann is facilitator (Queen Mother) for this group We will have a special project each month, though members can sew on a project that they are already working on, if they desire. Last year members made a quilted red hat tote bag, a red hat cardi-gan from a sweat shirt, learned to knit and knitted a fabric strip scarf among other things. A red hat and a purple dress or pant suit is the dress for the day, though we do not frown on those who just want to come and not dress up. It is barrels of fun, however, when we go to lunch and have everyone asking questions about the club!

BLOCK WATCHERS CLUB

Block Watchers meet on the second or third Friday of each month. (Check the calendar.) Their goal is to complete three quilt tops a year. They have already finished two this year: Garden Twist and Crazy for You. Carolyn is the facilitator. In September, we will be starting our third quilt, Sunporch Splash, a quilt from the book Tropical Thirds. This is made from 17 one-third yard print pieces and a background. It is never to late to join the group. The club fee is $20 per year. Members get a 20% discount off on regular priced fab-ric on club nights.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY SAMPLER CLUB

Friday/Saturday Sampler Club meets on the first Friday and Sat-urday (together) of each month. Blocks are available each month for $5 and may be purchased whether or not you come to the meet-ing. However, those who come to the meeting and bring a com-pleted block (any one of the three offered) from the last month will receive two free fat quarters from our special basket. If you bring and show a Show and Tell that hasn’t been shown before, your name will go in the box for a drawing for a free gift. Also, your name will go in a box for the drawing at the end of the year. The club meetings help us to keep up by finishing each block each month. That’s a lot better than getting to the end of the year and having to make them all at once. If you have not bought your finishing kit/kits for your quilt/s, you need to do so soon so that you will not be disappointed and find that they are all gone.

ARTISTA SEWING CLUB The Bernina Club is back by popular demand. Starting in September we will once again be offering these great clubs to you. There are 2 clubs, Embroidery and Sewing, that meet once a month on the 2nd Tuesday at 10 and 1 respec-tively. The two clubs will be combined at 5:30 that evening. In Embroidery Club we will be demoing a technique and sharing with you all the new information and supplies. This is a great opportunity to learn everything you need to know about embroidery not only from the instructor but also from the other people in attendance. Sewing Club is also a lecture/demo with the latest foot and sewing technique being shown every month. Don’t forget to bring a show and share to the meetings. As always there will be door prizes and lots of fun. Programs for the Sewing Sept.- Quick and Easy gifts Oct. Embellishing, Couching, and punch tool Nov. BSR Dec. Christmas Party Programs for Embroidery Club: Sept.. Quick and Easy gifts. Oct. Buttons, Buttons, Who’s Got the Button? Nov. Guest-Cathy Liles Dec. Christmas Party

A family is a patchwork of love.

Do you or someone you love need a new pet?

We have the Benartex pet kits from Carol’s Zoo, and they are adorable. There is a lamb, a frog, a puppy, two pigs, a polar bear, a black bear and a mouse. With just two pattern pieces these animals could not be easier to make. The pattern, the Minkee fabric and the eyes are included in the kit. These are so much fun to make and so precious for yourself or a child of any age.

NEW KITTED QUILTS Our own Charlotte’s de-sign, Bali Crossroads, has been kitted for you.

For the fellows in your life, this cowboy kit will be per-fect!

Susan Winget designed this panel as a part of her Kansas Song collec-tion. Buy it in a kit with the match-ing fabrics.

Christmas is coming sooner than we think! Be sure to view the fabrics that have already come in. Above on the right is Nancy Halvorsen’s Santa’s Coming fabric. There are many suggestions for use for this fabric for your Christmas decorations.. Fabric from Susan Winget’s Jolly Ol’ St. Nick collection is on the left.

This precious little wallhanging to count the days til Christmas has been kitted for you, also. This is a Minkee project that uses white Minkee for the fur and beard. A new fabric for our store, chalk fabric, is used for writing the number of days until Christmas. Who wouldn’t like this reminder?

Jolly ol’ St. Nick is a new fabric collection by Susan Winget for Benartex as well as a new matching BERNINA embroidery CD and card. Think of the fun you can have with these two items.

One yard of fabric, like one cookie, is never enough!

This panel is part of the Santa’s Coming collection of Nancy Halvorsen. The panels make great wall hangings or can be incorporated into quilts. There’s time to make those special Christmas items now if you can get started!

DON’T FORGET TO

MEET THE TEACHERS!

FALL FESTIVAL/

OPEN HOUSE

AUGUST 25 3—7 p.m.

CAN YOU IDENTIFY WITH THIS?

My husband wondered what happened to his life, And to his somewhat organized wife. The laundry’s piled high, the dishes undone,. The kids have been having unthinkable fun. As I truly must take some time to confess, This house is in a terrible mess. But let me tell you with a happy tear, I just got my BERNINA this year! Jacenta O’Halleran (Some of us still have this problem after more than one year!)

Be sure to sign up for BERNINA eNews on the BERNINA site, www.berninausa.com. The email newsletter has great tips about sewing, embroidery, and quilting.

Monday Night Sit & Sew If you want to sew, and you want companionship — to laugh and talk and have fun while you are sewing, may we recom-mend the Monday Night Sit & Sew? This is the place where you can get any help needed with your projects or find new pro-jects to start. Help is available for both quilting and embroi-dery.Come at 5 and stay til 9 p.m. Carolyn is the facilitator for this Monday night group. If you have questions, come by to talk with her or give her a call. The fee for these sessions is $10 per night.

Nancy Hemrick and Maureen Trevathan are our FABRICOLICS WINNERS this quarter. They have each won 12 fat quarters of their choice.

You will reap what you sew!

“Fabricologist Resource Center” sounds much more expensive than “fabric stash.” Blessed are the daughters of the piece–

makers, for they shall inherit the quilts.

DISPLAY FABRICS REARRANGED BY COLOR

Fabrics in each color wave have been placed together on the shelves. Hopefully, this will help you put together your quilt fabrics. All fabrics are color coded: Batiks are blue; Thimbleberries are green; 20’s and 30’s are yellow and Civil War Reproductions are red. Colored tapes have been placed on the top of each bolt so that you can easily identify the special fabrics.

As ye sew, so shall ye rip!
