Over the years I have had the opportuni-ty to participate in numerous events on Catalina. I started running the Catalina Marathon in the early 1980’s, but since

then they have added a half marathon, a 50 miler and the Catalina Eco Marathon so runners can abuse themselves on the island’s amazing trails all year long. After so many years of running the island, why do I keep going back? Simple. It’s the awesome lessons you learn along the way.

TRAINING IS OVERATED: Trail marathons are not like road marathons. Rather than trying to run all 26.2 miles, when there is 6,000 plus feet of climbing in a trail race, you’ll see most folks walking the up-hills and jogging the downhills and the fl ats. It’s more of a Tour de Trail than a real race. So you can forget about the training log and how many miles you should be running to complete a marathon. If you feel like enjoy-ing a wonderful day alone with your thoughts, ignore that always a pain ‘I’m not really ready for this’ voice and just go for it.

LITTLE THINGS ARE HUGE: When you’re at mile 18 of a trail marathon, it is the little things that always bring us the greatest joy. A cold sponge, a nice breeze, a glimpse of the ocean, an ice cube or a fi stful of Gummy Bears are some-times the world’s greatest gifts.

BE YOUR OWN ISLAND: Yeah, you are defi nitely racing on an island, but even better is the fact that in the back country, since there are absolutely no distractions, you get to become your own island. No phone, no e-mail, no texts, no problems. It’s as pure as it gets. You, a pair of shoes and a trail that can take you wherever you want to go.

RUNNING IS OVERATED: This is something I learned a few Novembers ago. I was 17 miles into the Catalina Eco Marathon. I am running on the right side of the trail. A group of three is walking next to me and I’m not gaining an inch. Our pace is exactly the same, but my heart rate is through the roof. So I decide to follow their lead. I think it was that great runner Confucius who once said ‘Why run when you can walk?’

LOSING IS WINNING: Say your best buddy trains 40 hours a month for fi ve months getting ready for a marathon. Track sessions, ice baths, long weekend runs and constant pace work. You, on the other hand, decide the night before to jump into a trail marathon. What the heck? You ran a 10K a month ago, right? They invested 200 hours into training over fi ve months while you invested maybe 100 hours of training over the same period. They fi nish in fi ve hours and

you take six. They win, right? Well, it depends how you add up the score. They spent 100 extra hours of training to beat you by one? The math seems pretty obvious to me, winner.

FINISHER OR RESIDENT: Most of the races

on the mainland give you an escape clause. Drop out and you can catch a bus, hitchhike or get a cab. When you’re on Catalina and you drop out in the middle of nowhere you become much more than a non-fi nisher: you become a resident.

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE ANYONE: In my early years in Catalina, I was a skinny running guy. Let’s just say that the folks who run trail marathons are built from a sturdier stock and can carry a little more heft than the traditional road warriors. As I stood at the start of my fi rst Cata-lina Marathon back in the day, a point- to- point affair, one of the older, seasoned runners actually read my mind as I sized up the competition. “Son,” he said, “I know what you’re thinking, but you’re wrong. A lot of that cellulite is going to kick your butt back to Avalon.”

He was right and it did.

Check out www.runcatalina.com for information on all of the events on Catalina Island.

Morgan Jaldon

Morgan was born in Vallejo, California and now lives in San Francisco. Her running journey started when she realized after trying clothes on one summer that she wasnt happy with the size she was fi tting into. So, she started run-ning and ran herself down to a size zero.

Since then it has been an amazing journey for her, traveling and meeting new people and participating in events to keep busy. She accredits much of her motivation to her father, who also was a longtime runner.

Morgan continues to run and push herself and is also aspiring to become a core power yoga sculpt instructor in Walnut Creek.

Congratulations Morgan, you inspire us. You’re our september 2015 Athlete of the Month! #RPAOM

Why comfort zones hold us back in sports, love and life…Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through

experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved. -Helen Keller

It sucks to suck at things. It sucks even more if people are watching you suck. Welcome to the world of swimming, running, and cycling in public. To avoid the suck, we create comfort zones. A comfort zone is simply a psychological fence that we erect to protect something we feel mentally vulnerable about. Staying inside the fence gives us a sense of security, comfort and a predictableness that is calming. Beyond the fence lies the unknown – which we assume is discomfort, fear, failure, and judgment.

Comfort zones are a normal adaptive

TrainingPlace

response to keep the inner peace. We all do it. It’s as human as offi ce gossip. Most comfort zones are very helpful; they materialize as habits or routines that take the thinking (and therefore stress) out of daily tasks. Usually we prefer to keep our underlying vulnerability very private, and for good reason. Admitting that we’re fl awed and then showing the entire world what that fl aw is, is as scary as hell.

But make no mistake about it, comfort zones are entirely imaginary. Like an emotional plaster cast for a fake broken leg. They are made up by you; fi gments of your imagination — an imagination that has become hijacked by a primitive part of your brain (the limbic system) that is motivated solely by keeping you alive, minimizing discomfort, increasing pleasure, and…drum roll….protecting your ego. And your brain has a Nobel Prize in protecting your ego and self-image — the perceptions you have about who you think you should be. Your limbic system will lie, cheat, and steal to keep up ap-pearances. At least on the outside.

Many comfort zones are relatively trivial and easy to live with, such as continuing to swim on your own because the thought of joining a master’s swim group fi lls you with fear about being too slow, not being able to do fl ip turns, only being able to do breaststroke, or simply being exposed as someone who has no clue as to what’s actually going on. Some comfort zones are trivial and just plain funny – like the

inability to take a dump in front of your spouse. Some comfort zones are tolerable but

frustrating – like always having to wait to shower until you get home from the gym because the thought of being naked in a YMCA locker room gives you the cold sweats. Some are mildly irritating – often to others too – like your tendency to avoid anything with the word “race” in it because the thought of head-to-head competition creates a cascade of anxiety about aggression, embarrassment, and failure. Perhaps your comfort zone stops you from pushing really hard in a race because of a fear of the pain, or of ‘blowing up’ and worst of all, not fi nishing. After all, if you lay it all out there and it’s STILL not enough, what does that say about you?

Other comfort zones are more sinister and a recipe for long term misery, like avoiding long term relationships for fear of being rejected, or staying in a job you hate because you don’t know what else you could do and you’ve got bills to pay.

Living in mental cruise control and making nothing but safe choices leads to boredom and complacency. A break-through in happiness, self-awareness, and mental toughness requires new experience. And the best experiences for your brain lie out yonder where the gremlins live. But fear not, here’s a quick cheat sheet to getting your Braveheart on and confronting your gremlins!

Step #1. Choose the comfort zone you’re tired of. If you have no desire to leave a comfort zone because it’s trivial or it doesn’t prevent you from reaching a goal that’s import-ant to you, then my advice is to just leave it the hell alone. A mild case of illogicitis, or harmless hypocrisy won’t kill you. It’s the comfort zones that stop us from enjoying life to the fullest that need to be confronted. Think about all the situations you currently avoid and why. If your denial runs so deep that you’ve justifi ed every-thing, ask yourself this question instead: in 10 years’ time, what things in my athletic life will I wish I had done differently? Perhaps it’s joining a master’s swim group? Trying to qualify for KONA? Running the Boston marathon? Seeing how hard your body can push in a race?

Step #2. Embrace the fear. When you start thinking about leaving the comfort zone and having to face your gremlins, instead of trying to control these thoughts and feelings, give yourself a few minutes to really wallow in them. That’s right, jump right in to the imaginary scenario. Let it surround you. Think through all the aspects of the situation that are terrifying. Recreate them. Perhaps it’s walking on the pool deck to your fi rst master’s swim session with no idea what the hell is going on, clueless about which lane you should swim in. Hear the splashing and smell the chlorine. Secretly you wish for your own lane. What about feeling hesitant to push yourself to exhaustion on the run for fear of having to walk or, worse still, collapsing?

What about just running easy so your face doesn’t contort and get covered in dried snot? Next, picture yourself as an outsider, as though you’re watching someone else do exactly the same thing. How do your feelings change as you witness someone else making the same ‘mistakes’? Finally, go back to seeing yourself in the terrifying situation but this time focus on controlling your body’s response — slow your breath, inhale deeply from your diaphragm and smile at the crazi-ness of it all. See yourself surviving the ordeal and feel the new sense of accomplishment and happiness.

Step #3. Recognize that actions can fail, but people cannot. One of the biggest misjudgments that people make is mistak-ing a failed plan for a failed person. Plans fail. Actions fail. People are not failures. The critical point is what we do with our failed actions and plans (or the thought of failure). Do we learn from them? Do we ignore them? The Ebola of failure is giving up when the consequences are not physically threatening. If the consequences are not life threatening (or injury threatening), in virtually all situa-tions the best option for your brain is to KEEP GOING.

Mental toughness is built by enduring in the face of failure, it doesn’t come from squealing with delight on a downhill with a tailwind. One scientifi c reason why this is good advice is due to ‘neuroplasticity.’ We now know that your brain physically changes in response to these experiences. Embracing the suck causes neural pathways and synaps-es in your brain to change to make you better prepared, more confi dent, more adaptable, and more resistant. It’s brain fi tness.

Step #4. Reframe the Goal. In a comfort zone-busting new experience, force your goal to be something you are always in control of. When the goal is under your

control, you always get to defi ne success and failure. If your goal requires other people to comply, you’re already in trouble. The best goal is based on the effort you plan to give, not the time it takes you, where you fi nish, or how others see you. Start every new event with this simple pledge: “No matter what happens today, I agree to give it everything I’ve got given the circumstances.” You might be unfi t or under prepared, you might get your goggles knocked off, get a fl at, or be the slowest person in the lane or race – these are all your ‘circumstances’ – but they have no bearing on the effort.

Step #5. Make snap decisions. Yup, you heard me. If we let our fears and con-cerns linger long enough, we can become paralyzed by them, unable to make a deci-sion. Sometimes, it’s good to be impulsive. Go on I dare you, make a quick decision about something scary in the future. The “in the future” part is important because it gives us time to fi gure out the plan of how we’re going to execute it. Don’t confuse this with snap decisions about actions that also occur at the same time (like getting a tattoo while drunk, or buying something you can’t afford). By quickly committing to a goal in advance, we overcome decision anxiety AND have time to think about careful execution. It’s a win-win for your brain. So think about something you’re nervous about –whether it’s entering a certain race or signing up for master’s swim – take the plunge and just register and then revisit steps #2-#4 to deal with the ensuing emotions.

So go ahead and do something out of the ordinary. Just jump! Your body and brain (and even your love life!) will thank you for it later.

Welcome to the 4th Annual Get Fit Festival. We are ex-cited to announce several new additions in 2015.

Bring the family, bring friends, but most importantly—be there!

THE GET FIT FESTIVALNot a runner or a biker… no problem.

Join the fun with lots of activities to choose from, including

• Food trucks – sample some of OC’s fi nest food trucks (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.)

• Thrive Apparel Blowout Sale – grab a workout shirt, shorts, hat, etc. at a great price (cash or check only)

• The Thrive Zone – try your luck at one of the challenging carnival games

• The Fitness Zone – try Zumba, yoga, or line dancing. Check getfi tsocal.org for schedule and line-up

• The Kid’s Zone – bounce and blast your way through the kid’s zone (activities for ages 4 - 12)

• Fitness and Health Expo – check out a new product or service from a select group of fi tness and health professionals

EVENT SPOTLIGHT

• Live music – hear the great sounds of Catfi sh Junction playing live on the main stage

THRIVE 5K FUN RUN/WALKEnjoy a fast but friendly 5K course

through the streets and trails of Irvine. This chip-timed event is open to all skill levels and ages. All proceeds to benefi t the Southern California Special Olympics.

THE THRIVE BIKE CLASSICEnjoy a scenic 30-mile tour through the

heart of Orange County. This noncompeti-tive event is a great way to see the OC with friends and family. Past participants rave about this scenic and beginner-friendly course. Pump up those tires and let’s roll!

THE GET FIT RELAY CHALLENGEThe Kaiser Permanente Get Fit Chal-

lenge is a 36-mile relay completed by a six-person team. Each team member runs or walks two different three-mile routes through the scenic San Diego Creek River Trails.

The distance is sure to appeal to elite athletes, as well as the occasional jogger. It’s the perfect relay race for everyone.

Starting in the parking lot at the Kaiser Permanente Irvine Medical Center, one team member at a time hits the path for a three-mile journey. The rest of the team waits at their team tent and/or the check-point area by the start. Signs and balloons will mark the course. Participants run the course and head back to the checkpoint to hand off to a teammate. When they are not running, other team members will be busy cheering on teammates and other teams in the Thrive Village!

ALL FITNESS LEVELS ENCOURAGED!Running two legs during a four-hour relay

race is much easier than you think. You will have plenty of time after the fi rst leg to stretch, rest, eat, and drink, before complet-ing the second leg. Once the last runner comes in on the last leg, all team members will perform a victory lap and fi nish together. Finisher medals and awards will occur at the fi nish line on the fi nisher stage!

The best way to put together a team is to elect a team captain. Put your team together as early as possible. It’s easier to recruit people when they have time to train, and before their schedule gets too busy.

PREPARING FOR YOUR RELAY

Train as you would for a 10K race. Training should start six to eight weeks ahead of the event, depend-ing on your fi tness level. (See online training plan at getfi tsocal.org) A good rule of thumb is to increase your mileage by 10% each week. Get your teammates together and do a few training runs. Have fun!

TEAM UNIFORMWe suggest you get your team

together and design a uniform unique to your team. Be creative and have fun. Who knows… maybe you might win a prize for best team outfi t. All team members will receive a dri-fi t running shirt and fi nisher’s medal.

REGISTRATION AND FEESThe relay registration is $240 per

team ($40 per person). The team captain will need to register the team and pay on behalf of the team. You do not need to have your entire team put together to register. 5 Tips for Reading Food LabelsBY MAT T FITZGERALD

M any if not most of the food products you buy have labels. If you were to read and consider every word on every label, it

would take you all day to shop for groceries. Fortunately, this isn’t necessary. These fi ve tips will help you decide what to buy and what not to buy in scarcely more time than it takes to read a stop sign.

1| THE BEST LABEL IS NO LABELSome types of products are required to

carry labels with nutrition facts and a list of ingredients. Others are not. Those that aren’t include fresh produce and fresh fi sh and meats. It so happens that these natural, whole, unpro-cessed foods are some of the healthiest foods you can eat. So if most of the foods in your shopping cart have no labels, you’re doing well.

2| THE FEWER INGREDIENTS, THE BETTER

Products with few ingredients tend to be closer to their whole, natural, unprocessed form than are products with lots of ingredients. For exam-ple, the jar of natural peanut butter I have in my refrigerator contains the following ingredients: peanuts, salt. The leading brand of peanut but-ter contains these same ingredients plus sugar and hydrogenated vegetable oil. The natural peanut butter is healthier, as are most products with fewer ingredients—so look for them.

3| IGNORE “HEALTH HALOS”A health halo is a phrase found on the

front of a product label that is intended to make consumers think that the product is healthier than it is. Virtually anything can be made to seem healthy in this way. For example, a can of soda that contains 40 grams of sugar is “Fat Free!” Ignore all such information on the front of product labels and focus on the legally required information on the back.

4| AVOID ADDED SUGARS, OILSYou could drive yourself nuts trying

to identify and avoid every possible “bad” ingredient that could appear on a product label.

Fortunately, it’s just not necessary. It’s okay to consume an unpronounceable preservative here and there—doing so won’t cause you to suffer any negative health consequences.Stay focused instead on the few “bad” ingredi-ents that people really do consume too much of, and that’s added sugars and oils. The peanut butter example I gave earlier in this article is a good one. Again, the natural product contains only peanuts and salt. The popular brand also contains sugar and hydrogenated vegetable oil—two completely unnecessary extras that and a lot of calories and no real nutrition.Added sugars and oils are everywhere in pack-aged foods these days. Making a consistent effort to steer around them will make a big difference for your body.

5| LOOK FOR WHOLE GRAINSReading labels is not all about looking out

for and avoiding bad stuff. It’s also about seeking and choosing good stuff. Whole grains, which are proven to lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, are high on this list. Many grain-based products are made with refi ned grains or a mix of refi ned and whole grains. Try to choose products that are made entirely with whole grains. For example, look for “100% whole wheat” on bread labels.
