Her parents then abandoned her on the steps of a government orphanage where she spent the next seven years of her life living through hell. The children slept three and four to a bed, were routinely abused and were never allowed to venture outside.

When she was adopted by a wonderful family from Michigan at the age of seven, Scout Bassett only weighed 22 pounds.

But coming to the United States changed everything for the now 26 year old. She learned the English language quickly and was winning spelling bees within a year and a half of com-ing to this country. She found that there were amazing opportunities for people with disabilities through a San Diego based charity called the Challenged Athletes Foundation (www.challenge-dathletes.com) which I co-founded 21 years ago. Through CAF, Scout met and was mentored by a woman named Sarah Reinertsen who was also a single above knee amputee. Sarah showed me that there are really no limits to what I can accomplish, remembers Bassett. Sarah was on the cover of ESPN Magazine and Runners World Magazine, won an ESPY Award, wrote a book and fi nished the Ironman Triathlon World Cham-pionship. Sarahs message was that I needed to set goals and then go out and accomplish them.

When she returned to China to race the triathlon, it was the fi rst time she had been back there since her adoption. That was an incredibly emotional experience for me, says Scout. It really made me appreciate how much my life has changed since coming to the U.S.

And her life continues to change. The Orange County resident realized that, while triathlon is great, running track is her true passion. She recently set an American record for her category at 200 meters, holds the world record at 400 meters and the goal now is to make the U.S. Paralympic Track and Field team and compete in the 2016 Paralympics in Rio.

If you ever get a chance to tour the CAF build-ing in San Diego, there is a huge photo on the wall of two UCLA standouts, basketball legend Bill Walton, who stands close to seven feet tall, and Scout Bassett who is just a tad shorter. In the photo they are standing back to- back and the copy above the image says it all:

How to Balance Your Energy SourcesBY MATT FITZGERALD

T here are three main sources of metabolic energy (a.k.a. calories): carbohydrate, fat, and protein. Col-lectively, they are known as macronu-trients. Each energy source encompasses various subtypes. For example, within the category of fats, there are unsaturated fats, saturated fats, essential fats (which are actually a subtype of unsaturated fats) and trans fats.

One of the most basic questions you can ask about your diet is this: How should I balance my

energy sources? Fortunately, there is no precise ratio of carbs, fat, and protein you need to main-tain in order to maximize your health and fitness. You can be equally healthy and fit with a range of different macronutrient balances.

On the other hand, its not a case of anything goes. The following table summarizes current scientific guidelines on energy sources for endurance athletes. For more information, check out the expanded online version of this article here: [INSERT URL].
