Radiation is energy that comes from a source , travelsthrough space and may be able to penetrate variousmaterials.

Light, radio, and microwaves are types of radiation thatare called nonionizing.

Ionizing radiation is one that can produce charged particles (ions) in matter.

Alpha radiation is a heavy, very short-range particleand is actually an ejected helium nucleus.

Beta radiation is a light, short-range particle, and is

actually an ejected electron.

Gamma radiation and x rays are highly penetratingelectromagnetic radiation.

In medicine where energy level of emittedparticles(generally photons) determines the penetration depth

of the radiation.

In industrial process involving sterilization, radiation

coating, crosslink polymers etc.

A radiation analysis instrument for measuring the characteristics of

radiation emanating from a source (X) includes two absorbers andcorresponding detectors with the detectors being disposed in the pathof the radiation and the absorbers being interposed between thecorresponding detector and the source. A circuit digitizes the analogsignals derived by the two detectors and provides the digital values to

a microcomputer which stores these digitals values within amemory. A microprocessor processes the digital signals stored withinthe memory to analyze characteristics of the radiation emitted fromand the potential applied across the source (X).

Absorptive element, can be a thin layer of metal, connected to a heat sink (a body of constant temperature)

through a thermal link. The result is that any radiationimpinging on the absorptive element raises its temperatureabove that of the heat sink, the higher the energy absorbed, the higher the temperature will be. The temperaturechange can be measured directly with a thermopile or viaan attached thermometer.

It consisy of a special film coated with two different emulsions.

One side is coated with, fast emulsion sensitive to low levels of

exposure. The other side of the film is coated with slow

emulsion less sensitive to exposure. If the radiation exposure

causes the fast emulsion to be darkened to a degree that it

cannot be interpreted, the fast emulsion is removed and the

dose is computed using the slow emulsion. Radiation of a given

energy is attenuated to a different extent by various types of absorbers. By comparing these results, the energy of the

radiation can be determined and the dose can be calculated

knowing the film response for that energy.
