Welcome to our 2014 bull sale. This will be our 20th An-niversary sale. Hard to believe that much time has gone by. I looked back into some old catalogues the other day and it’s hard to believe the changes that have been made in the Simmental breed in the last 20 years. I think the changes have definitely been for the better. I hear some other breeds talking about going back to old breeding to clean up prob-lems and I can’t help but think if you aren’t making progress in every new generation, what are you doing? I think the Charolais breed has progressed in the same way. When I was younger my Dad used a lot of Charolais but, much like Simmental they did have their problems - calving ease and disposition to name a couple. These have been cleaned up with much culling and look at where these breeds are today. The disposition in the Charolais I think is second to none anymore and they are still the number one performance breed. Simmental has downsized the frame and introduced a solid red or black and has the number one mother cow in the industry. As well, both breeds have intro-duced the polled gene. I commend breeders in both these breeds for their foresight and determination in making these cattle what they are today. The next thing you can look at in the last 20 years is the whole beef industry. Look at what this industry has gone through just in the last 10 years - what with BSE, Lakeside strike in 2005 and then the plant shutdown in 2012. North America is now looking at a much smaller cow herd and I think if you managed to survive the last 20 years you are in for a very bright future. The trick will be to keep using top genetics. I think you will find those genetics in this sale. With the diligent use of AI and purchasing top-quality cleanup bulls over the last 20 years I think our cowherd is as strong as any. So if you are looking for bulls with performance and calving ease bred into them you need to be at this sale. All of the bulls will have been earnotched test for BVD again this year as in the past. We again welcome Ralph Retzlaff, Saddleridge Charo-lais, to the sale. Their numbers may not be large but the qual-ity is strong. If you are unable to make it to the sale, please give either myself, Ralph, Brian Bouchard or any of the sale staff a call and have the offering evaluated for you. Welcome to the Rainalta and Guests 20th Annual Bull Sale. For 20 years Rainalta has brought the industry a product meeting the needs of the beef industry. Bill puts as much effort as any producer in the country researching pedigrees and sires so he can offer his customers a set of potential herd bulls that are right for the beef business. This is very evident over the years with the number of familiar faces and repeat buyers that are present annually to bid on and purchase bulls. With the offering of 30 Simmental bulls and 20 Charolais bulls this is an opportunity to fill a major part of your herd bull needs in one day. The Simmental section will be sired by very familiar AI bulls and proven walking herd bulls from the Rainalta program. The Charolais division both from Rainalta and Saddleridge will be a set of functional white bulls with quality and consistency to meet your Charolais beef bull needs. Should a problem occur barring physical injury or mismanagement, a bull of equal value will be provided or a credit will be issued towards the purchase of another bull. We guarantee you will have a bull to service your cows.

Bull Development & Delivery$70 will be taken off purchase price if bulls are picked up from the sale, otherwise yearlings will be delivered after April 1, 2014. Two-year-old bulls will be delivered as soon after the sale as pos-sible.

Terms & ConditionsCattle will sell under the standard Canadian Simmental Associa-tion sale terms and conditions, listed at the back of the catalogue.

Health & FertilityAll bulls will have a scrotal measurement and a vet examination done prior to the sale. All bulls over 12 months of age will also be semen tested. These bulls will be delivered once a semen test has been passed. All bulls have been treated with Ivomec and have current vaccinations. Contact the breeder for specific herd health programs.

Sight Unseen Purchase ProgramIf you are unable to attend the sale but are interested in bulls, give the consignors or Brian Bouchard a call and they will per-sonally go over the bulls and your program and recommend bulls that would meet your needs. We will represent your needs in a professional and confidential manner.

EPD ExplanationEPD’s are “Expected Progeny Differences”. They are a useful tool in selection. EPD’s incorporate the individual animal with is av-eraged ancestry performance. EPD’s do not compare across cat-tle breeds, they are individually based per breed. EPD’s indicate a probable variance above or below breed average for that trait for a given bull’s progeny. Use them for guidance in the direction you want your herd to go.

BVD TestingBuying bulls that are tested negative and vaccinated against BVD as calves and pre-breeding is the best way to avoid bringing BVD into your herd with your herdsire purchases. All the Simmental & Charolais bulls in this sale have been ear-notch tested negative for BVD.

Bovine Viral Diarhea, or BVD, is an important disease in cattle. The prevalence of incidence of the disease is relatively low, but if you happen to have it in your herd it can lead to a host of problems. BVD is a complicated disease that can show up as stillbirths or deformed calves, late-term abortions, early embryonic death (early pregnancies are resorbed), Persistently Infected animals (PI animals), or inceased incidence of other diseases such as scours, or pneumonia outbreaks that are difficult to resolve. The major reservoir of virus is the Persistently Infected animal. This animal was infected by the virus between 50 and 150 days of gestation. The immune system believes that the virus is a normal part of the body so it is infected for life, in fact, every cell in the animal’s body becomes a virus factory, releasing large amounts of virus into the environment (such as water bowls, feed troughs, etc). Over 50% of PI animals die by 12 to 18 months of age, and probably 90% are dead by 24 months. The PI animal that sheds millions of virus particles daily is a threat to herd mates because the virus suppresses the immune system making them more susceptible to other diseases. This is where the greatest economic losses occur. Vaccination against BVD will not eradicate it from your herd if it is present (vaccine has no effect on the PI animal), but will help to minimize some of the effects. Taking ear notch samples and testing for BVD is the only way to prove an animal is not a PI. Testing and vaccination work together. Buying bulls that are tested PI negative and vaccinated against BVD as calves and pre-breeding is the best way to avoid bringing BVD in with your herdsire purchases. All the Simmental bulls in this sale have been ear-notch tested negative for BVD.

The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at sale location unless satisfactory credit arrange-ments have been made prior to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. Bouchard Livestock Ltd reserves the right to require a certified cheque as settlement before releasing any sale cattle. Should the purchaser fail to settle for his purchase, Bouchard Livestock Ltd reserves full power to resell the animal to the best advantage, either publicly or privately, without further notice. Any loss arising from such resale, together with keep and all other expenses shall be payable by the defaulter. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released. The owners, Bouchard Livestock Ltd and sale staff have the right to refuse bids from anyone who has a previous record of default in payment and/or who has not made prior credit arrangements prior to the sale with the owners and/or Sale Management.

BID - Every animal consigned to the sale must be sold by auction. No by-bidding will be permitted. Each ani-mal will be sold to the highest bidder.

DISPUTES - In cases of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s deci-sion in such matters will be final.

PURCHASER’S RISK - Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold.

ANNOUNCEMENTS from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements.

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY - The proper Registration of Recordation paper, as the case may be, will be duly transferred and furnished to the buyer for each animal after settlement has been made.

SHIPPING - Assistance will be given in making shipment after the sale, but Sale Management or Seller as-sumes no risk. Expenses incurred are the responsibility of the purchaser. Purchasers are requested to furnish shipping instruction when making settlement.

GUARANTEE - All animals will carry standard breeding guarantee as specified by the applicable Canadian breed Association. At no time shall the seller’s liability exceed the purchased price of the animal.

EXCEPTION TO GUARANTEE - In cases where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduc-tion techniques after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void. In the cases of bulls, they are guaranteed to breed naturally according to applicable Canadian breed Association guarantee, but no guarantee is given that semen from any bull will freeze.

HEALTH - It is the buyer’s responsibility to determine health requirements for importing any animal into his province or state. Bouchard Livestock Ltd assumes no responsibility for the health status of any animal in the sale.

ACCIDENTS - Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the Sale Management, auctioneer, or Association assumes any responsibility in this matter and disclaims any liability legal or otherwise in the event of accident or loss of property.
