THE WEST METRO EXTENSION PROVIDESA FAST PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION CONNECTIONFROM MATINKYL TO KIVENLAHTI
CUSTOMER: CITY OF ESPOO
Metro traffic in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area continues to the
west, and in Espoo the metros extension from Matinkyl to Kiven-
lahti will be entirely inside a tunnel. Once completed, the West
Metro will transport over 100,000 passengers a day. Ramboll is
strongly involved in West Metro track alignment and the stations
project design. In addition to leading the consulting team, we are
responsible for the projects traffic and rail engineering, municipal
engineering and temporary traffic arrangements, as well as risk
management and safety planning.
ABSOILS: LIFE-CYCLE THINKING AND THE DEVELOPMENTOF RECYCLING IN INFRASTRUCTURE CONSTRUCTION
CUSTOMER: CITIES OF HELSINKI, ESPOO AND VANTAA
The purpose of the Absoils project is to detect poor quality
surplus masses, such as soft clays, and transform them into
material suitable for civil construction. At the same time, we can
reduce long distance transportation of masses and their
accumulation as waste. The use of virgin rock materials, such ascrushed rock and gravel, can be concentrated only on those
construction destinations, where there are no alternatives to their
use. Ramboll is in charge of the projects laboratory and
measurement services in addition to studying soil properties of
pilot sites. We have produced instructions for construction work,
quality control and monitoring. We have also been responsible for
producing and presenting the metropolitan areas material service
system model, as well as informing about it.
SAFER TRAFFIC IN THE CITY CENTRE OF LAHTI
CUSTOMER: CITY OF LAHTI
The principle of developing Lahtis city centre is to concentrate
vehicle traffic on the city centres ring road and to change the area
inside the ring road into one dedicated to pedestrians, cyclists and
public transport. Ramboll worked as a consultant for Lahtis
downtown traffic research, where the traffic solutions were
determined and their feasibility and effects were confirmed.
The report prepared to support the design and planning of the
city centre also presented necessary street environment changes.

The waste of the residents of Pirkanmaa will be used in the future
to generate heating and electricity in Tamperes newly-built

THE METROPOLITAN AREA ADAPTINGTO CLIMATE CHANGE STRATEGY
CUSTOMER: HELSINKI REGION ENVIRONMENTALSERVICES AUTHORITY
By adapting to climate change, we can prevent and mitigate its
adverse effects and find ways to make use of its beneficial effects.
The cities in the metropolitan area and the Helsinki Region
Environmental Services Authority have prepared a draft of theclimate change adaptation strategy that focuses on the built
urban environment. Ramboll evaluates the effects of the drafts
