Light Up Rathcoole Volunteers needed badly

The Light Up Rathcoole initiative started in 2002 by a number of volunteers to enhance the Village at Christmas time. Over the years we have added extra lights and now run from Fitzmaurice Road right through to Rathlawns and our hope is to further expand them, perhaps from the roundabout below Avoca. The initiative also includes the arrival of Santa at the Old Library on first Saturday of December. This event attracted 265 children last December. In order to fund both the Lights and Santa’s arrival we run a Christmas Fair in the middle weekend of November each year. We also receive donations from individual residents and some business people in the Village. We sincerely thank all these people and also thank the people who give us power from their homes and business outlets to Light Up Rathcoole. Volunteers are needed to keep this initiative going, last year we had 6/7 people involved in hanging the lights over a five-week period. Unfortunately one of our founder members Noel Quinn passed away in August and is greatly missed. May he rest in peace. If you are willing to help please call Dick Butler 086 2538253 or Christy McDonnell 085 2588888.

Four Districts Day Care Centre makes Christmas time links with Local Pre-School

In the days approaching the festivities of the Christmas season in Rathcoole, the industrious children of Happy Feet Early Learning Centre put their collective shoulders to the wheel in helping out the 4 Districts Day Care Centre. During December the students partook in “chores-4-cash”. Funds raised were combined with donations and ticket sales from the annual perfor-mance of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, which took place at Rathcoole Boys Football Club on the 21st of December. The children of Happy Feet were able to make a donation of €200.00 to the Day Care Centre as a result. Mary McCabe of the 4 Districts Day Care Centre said it was a great experience for all age groups involved in the village, helping to strengthen the vital links within the community, across the generations at Christmastime. Kelly O’Hickey of Happy Feet said the teachers of the pre-school were delighted to have the opportunity to bring people together locally at this time of year, and that the children really enjoyed the idea of raising funds from their Christmas Play, along with the added responsibil-ity of completing their “chores”. Since opening in January of 2010, the students of Happy Feet ELC have made generous annual donations to “Present Aid”, a charity which helps those in developing countries and to Barretstown Castle in Co. Kildare. Kelly noted that she and the staff were honoured and privileged to be in a position to do something on a local level and that all the children and staff at Happy Feet are looking forward to supporting the Day Care Centre into the future. To make enquiries or for further information regarding pre-school childcare places at Happy Feet Early Learning Centre please contact Kelly at 0851571132.

Speech and Drama teacher Verity O’Connor led the children in an entertaining sing-song for the enjoyment of the residents.

Oscar Phillips played the lead role of the grinch in the performance of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas “

THE RETURN OF PARENT & TODDLER GROUP

RATHCOOLE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Parent and Baby/Toddler Groups can be a great way of meeting other people with children the same age as yours in your area. While these were traditionally aimed at mothers, they are now aimed at parents as well as minders, grandparents and other guardians. Children have the opportunity to meet other children without being le by their parent/ carer, this helps to build their confidence. Parent & Toddler Groups provide a good start to leaving your child in some form of day-care. Children have the chance to play with new toys and join in new fun games. Gives you also the chance to meet other parents and carers. If you are interested in coming along and join- ing in please give Tricia O Halloran a call in the Community Centre on 01-458 61 34

T he Four Districts Day Care Centre began 30 years ago to provide a place where the senior citizens of Saggart, Rathcoole, Newcastle and Brit-tas could meet old and new friends in a safe and friendly environment . Over the years it has provided a fantastic service to the area and has been a great success. It now needs your help to continue with that success. If you have a few hours to spare and would like to assist in any way please contact Christy on 086 4065656 for further details. SMALL DONATION WOULD BE APPRECIATED

DEAR RESIDENT

T he South Dublin County Council is proposing a new 6 year Newcastle Local Area Development Plan.

Newcastle, Rathcoole, Saggart and Brittas, have all been over developed, which then left existing residents with Ghost estates. We were told the previous plan would increase infrastructure. However, it has simply enabled the South Dublin County Council to zone a lot more land, a lot faster without providing any transport, infrastructure or services. I will be making a submission asking for 1. No more residential zonings 2. More open green space 3. Improved Transport infrastructure If you would like to support my submission, or view the existing plan, please email me [email protected] or contact 085 714 5005
