I’d like to nominate Gary Tilleson for the 2018-2019 Hall of Fame because, simply put, he coached and modeled all that RAHYA provides and strives to do. Gary is the father of three boys who each skated in RAYHA. Gary started coaching in 1996 and continued every year, with no gaps, until 2013. After a few years off the ice, Gary returned to coaching in 2017 as the U16 coach AND a Mite coach. Some of Gary’s roles and responsibilities included: • Coached at the Head and Assistant levels: 11 in-house teams and 8 A/B traveling teams • Graded tryouts for traveling teams to include Squirt, Peewee, Bantam, Junior Gold and U16 • Board member from 2000-2005: In House Director for 2 years, Traveling Director 2 years and Coaching Director 1 year. • Coach interview committees: 5 years • Organized in-house tournaments: 3 years • Coached many off season teams with RAYHA players As a coach and mentor, Gary held a variety of meetings in his home (meetings to help the association, to guide coaches and informational meetings for parents). Gary also ran many coaching development clinics. In addition to Gary’s coaching and board level responsibilities, Gary’s presence both on and off the ice is noteworthy. “He’s just a really good man” is how one Dad describes him. A former player says, “He was my favorite coach because he made it fun and I learned a lot from him.” From my perspective, Gary was a well-rounded leader. As a board member, he contributed innovative ideas, he listened and he always remained calm. As a mite coach, he was a patient, fun and gentle giant on the ice as well as welcoming and helpful when dealing with parents off the ice. As a squirt and peewee coach, he always had goals, was well prepared and he encouraged and motivated his players to achieve their full potential as individuals and as team players. Both on and off the ice, Gary’s passion was obvious; he helped to make RAYHA what it is today and he deserves the recognition of a RAYHA Hall of Famer for his commitment and contributions.

RAYHA Hall of Fame Gary Tilleson

2019

The purpose of RAYHA is to provide programs to teach, promote and compete in amateur youth ice hockey in a fun, healthy and educational environment for all participants. RAYHA strives to develop individual and team skills, teamwork, knowledge of the game, loyalty, responsibility and sportsmanship a positive youth sports culture, which teaches life lessons.

Some of Gary’s roles and responsibilities included:

• Coached at the Head and Assistant levels: 11 in-house teams and 8 A/B traveling teams

• Graded tryouts for traveling teams to include Squirt, Peewee, Bantam, Junior Gold and U16

• Board member from 2000-2005: In House Director for 2 years, Traveling Director 2 years and Coaching Director 1 year.

• Coach interview committees: 5 years

• Organized in-house tournaments: 3 years

• Coached many off season teams with RAYHA players

As a coach and mentor, Gary held a variety of meetings in his home (meetings to help the association, to guide coaches and informational meetings for parents). Gary also ran many coaching development clinics.

In addition to Gary’s coaching and board level responsibilities, Gary’s presence both on and off the ice is noteworthy. “He’s just a really good man” is how one Dad describes him. A former player says, “He was my favorite coach because he made it fun and I learned a lot from him.”

From my perspective, Gary was a well-rounded leader.
