NOTES ON MUSIC

Dear St. Catherine Parishioners,

Many of you have had the pleasure of hearing our Youth Ministry member Jordan Castro play flute at the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Sundays, which he has done faithfully every single week for almost a year. He was also part of the Festival Ensemble at our December 3 Christmas Concert.

Today, Jordan needs your help. He is raising tuition funds in order to continue his studies at a very competitive Juilliard MAP Program (Music Advancement Program). The bare minimum of the money he needs to make is $1,000. Please support Jordan at gofundme.com. Visit https://www.gofundme.com/2ax356gs. Here, you can click Donate Now and add as much as you would like to donate. Please be as generous as possible, every dollar makes a difference. If you are interested in the campaign, there are videos in the updates section where you can find a performance and an original composition by Jordan Castro.

Thank you for investing in Jordan's future -- and the future of our Music Ministries!

Sincerely, Dr. Liya Petrides

The Real Lovers of God - Narsinha Mehta

They are the real lovers of God Who feel others’ sorrow as their own. When they perform selfless service, They are humble servants of the Lord. Respecting all, despising none, They are pure in thought, word and deed. They are always truthful, even-minded, Never coveting others’ wealth, Free from all selfish attachments, Ever in tune with the Holy Name. Their bodies are like sacred shrines In which the Lord of Love is seen. Free from greed, anger, and fear, These are the real lovers of God.

Saturday, February 4 1:00 p.m. Lucey Parish Hall.

“The 10 Questions you Must Answer Before You Start Your Job Search”

Thursday, January 12, 2017

7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in Room 209

Mark's approach in this presentation is a 7 point step by step plan to zero in on what skills and processes are needed to quickly establish and implement a practical plan to achieve maximum results for those seeking employment – The 10 Questions you must answer Before you start your job search, being one of the important component in one of these steps.

“The 10 questions you must answer before you start your job search” is a fun interactive presentation that will cover the following topics:

Mark’s 7 Point Employment Strategy Why is asking Pre-Work questions necessary? Employment Strategy “Facts of Life” Answering Pre-Work questions, what the results are used for? The 10 questions that you should ask yourself

Mark promises that if you follow his techniques, answering these 10 questions honestly will enable you to lay the groundwork that becomes the basis for your employment strategy, resulting in moving your employment search in a positive direction.

Mark Troncone is a 38-year Information Technology professional. Having been in transition seven previous times in his career, Mark has witnessed the changes in the traditional way of finding employment. Through these experiences, he has developed and implemented a multi-component program to give a person in transition the necessary skills to gain employment in the new millennium. Mark has communicated his unique approach for generating a personal career transition plan to many networking groups and individuals in the Fairfield County area with consistently positive results.

Question: Who is this Saint? Answer: St. Anthony of Padua

Saint Anthony was born Fernando Martins in Lisbon, Portugal. He was born into a wealthy family and by the age of fifteen asked to be sent to the Abbey of Santa Cruz in Coimbra, the then capital of Portugal. During his time in the Abbey, he learned theology and Latin and was ordained to the priesthood. Fernando eventually received permission to leave the Abbey so he could join the new Franciscan Order. When he was admitted, he changed his name to Anthony. When a novice decided to leave the hermitage, he stole a valuable book of Anthony’s. When Anthony discovered it was missing, he prayed it would be found or returned to him. The thief did return the book and in an extra step returned to the Order as well. The book is said to be preserved in the Franciscan friary in Bologna today.

He was only 36-years-old when he died and was canonized less than one year afterward by Pope Gregory IX. Upon exhumation some 336 years after his death, his body was found to be corrupted, yet his tongue was totally incorrupt, so perfect were the teachings that had been formed upon it.

He is typically depicted with a book and the Infant Child Jesus. In Europe he is venerated as a renowned preacher. For the Weekend of January 7 - 8

Question: What is this candle called? For help, you may ask a Priest or Deacon.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK “New Year, Same God”.

“They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering

the house they saw the child with Mary his mother.” Gospel Reflection – Mt 2: 1-12 As you listened to the gospel, did you hear any echoes of the Old Testament reading from Isaiah? Perhaps you noticed that in both readings a bright light is leading people on a long journey. They want to see the Lord's glory and honor him with gifts (gold, frankincense, and myrrh). Matthew tells us the story of the astrologers, or magi. They followed a star to find "the newborn king of the Jews." Today's feast is called Epiphany, a word meaning "manifestation" or "shining forth" like a light. We celebrate that day when Jesus, our Light, was first revealed to the nations beyond Israel. Just as light shines forth so that we may see in the darkness, our faith in Jesus shines forth in us. Question of the Week: What “signs” in your life have led you to Jesus? Family Discussion Questions for the Gospel: The astrologers, or magi, represent all the peoples of the world. They had to make an effort to find Jesus. Even after seeing the star, they had to make a long journey before finding the Savior of the world. How are you like the magi? Do you have "stars" in your life that lead you on the right path to Jesus? Who or what are they?

Sometimes on long journeys, we are tempted to turn back. What keeps you on the road to Jesus?

It has been said that the star is a symbol of faith. How can your faith be a "star" for others this week? How can it light the way?

If you have any thoughts or questions about todays Gospel, or any questions about your faith, or simply to let me know you’re reading these discussions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. I’d love to hear from you.
