Get Connected!! Download the District Mobile App We want to encourage our Moorlands families to download the new district mobile app. It’s free from the App Store or Google Play (works only on Android or iOS devices). Just search for “Northshore School District.” Here are just a few of the things you can do with it: • Follow our school calendar and easily add events directly to your device calendar. • Look up our staff contact information under [school name] in the Schools Directory. • Check our school menu. • Pay for meals through a link to PayPams. • Follow our school to receive news and notifications. If you log in, you can also check information about your child(ren), such as grades, classes, attendance, cafeteria balance, checked-out library books, bus stop times -- and set alerts for some of these. To learn more and find out how to log in, visit the Mobile App webpage at www.nsd.org/mobileapp. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dates to Remember :

Spotlight Student! This week’s Spotlight Student was Javier. He turned nine this week on Friday, May 5th. Celebrating with him will be his Mother (Ana), Father (Scott), big brother (Alejandro – 16), and faithful furry friend, Chewie (goldendoodle – almost one). Javier’s favorite colors are red and green and he loves Icebreakers. If he were stranded on a deserted island, the one food he would want to have would be cheese pizza to eat. When he has free time, Javier loves to play video games. His favorite right now is “Clash Royale.” Some of Javier’s special treasures are Chewie and his rabbit, Curro. (Curro is back in Spain waiting for Javier to return and get him.) One of the happiest times Javier can remember is when he drove for 3 hours with his family to Richfield to get Chewie last June/July. Another exciting experience was just barely escaping Oliver while playing “Infection.” When asked what one wish he would make, Javier said to return to Spain and get Curro back.

Happy Spotlight Week, Javier! ___________________________________________ This week we…

* talked seriously about behaving and thinking more like a fourth grader with only 2 months of third grade left! At this time of the year, some students can get a bit comfortable and think they can sit back and relax. Exactly the opposite is the case! Now is the time to dig deep, try your best and finish strong! This will be the challenge as thoughts of summer vacation begin to invade thoughts. Thank you for any support towards keeping our third graders focused on a strong third grade finish. Reading * learned how illustrations are carefully thought out and planned and to notice just what pictures are provided and how they enhance the story’s meaning. Watch facial expressions, body language, colors used and what scene is shown. Books with little or no illustration rely more on how words create a picture in the reader’s mind. Students are instructed to be on the lookout for beautifully crafted sentences and paragraphs. * thought about how our knowledge of story maps leads us to watch for what the climax of the book is and how this part of the main character’s journey shows more about their traits. How do they respond to this highest, most tense part of the story? * discussed how our main character usually comes away from dealing with the climax of the story having learned some lesson. Skilled readers keep an eye out for this. This thinking and awareness can also help the reader learn about life lessons as well. Math * continued Unit 6 closely examining quadrilaterals and beginning our study of perimeter and area. A great deal of time was spent describing and identifying quadrilaterals using specific attributes: parallel sides, square corners, number of sides, lengths of sides. Students should feel comfortable describing and identifying a quadrilateral, a parallelogram, a square, a rectangle, a rhombus and a trapezoid. * spent time going over different math test question formats in preparation for the SBA. Students are instructed to read directions carefully and follow them explicitly. The test question might ask for them to select “all that apply” meaning there could be one or more

correct responses and they must be sure to examine each choice carefully. * continued with Math Wizards as students who complete their multiplication assessments move into division! Students will earn a Minecraft piece for each division family mastered and create their own custom Minecraft scene with these pieces. * began a perimeter and area art project using the letters in their names. We will be using polygon letters to calculate perimeter and area. Writing * continued revising our Google opinion slides. After having discussed the importance of strong word choice, convincing examples and explanations for each reason that support our opinion, students were then given a mini-lesson on use of a comma after short answers and transition phrases. Students were instructed to read their sentences and, when they paused to take a breath, to consider inserting a comma at that point. Social Studies * continued with our unit on Pioneers with a look at the reasons immigrants decided to move west. Students heard about the growing immigrant population on the east coast around the 1800’s and watched a short video that showed what it might have looked like as immigrants packed up their covered wagons for their journey west. Computer Lab * worked to finish our Opinion slide show with some editing. Students are inserting images to accompany their slides as well as checking for proper and correct conventions. * used Popplet Lite to create a small web related to our social studies unit on Pioneers (“Reasons why Immigrants Moved West”). Word Work * focused on the prefixes of ”un” and “dis.” We focused on the meaning of these prefixes (e.g the opposite of, not) and how they change the meaning of the base word.

Art * began our radial art project involving fractions, symmetry and origami. Students learned three basic folds: hat, kite, samurai fold. Using colored paper, students will fold and assemble their own symmetric design. What’s Happening in P.E.? 1st-6th grade The week's leading up to Spring break we will be participating in our floor hockey unit. During this unit students will be working on dribbling, passing, receiving, and shooting a puck. When students come back from Spring break we will start our Track & Field unit. Students in 3rd-6th grade are allowed to participate in the after school track program. More information is located on the Moorlands website. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Mr. Sheaffer. Mr. Tenney, Mr. Sheaffer, Mr. Holm Things to Remember… * to remind your child the importance of budgeting their time in order to successfully complete their homework and have it in on time. * to remind your child to be accurate when writing their daily homework down and checking their homework log to make sure their assignments are completed and turned in on time. * to remind your child of their expected daily 30 minute reading time and log entry.

How Was School? (The following are questions to stimulate family discussion around school – hopefully these will help your child share a more thorough account of their life as a professional student!) * Why must a square be a parallelogram? (Opposite sides are parallel) How can a parallelogram not be a square? (It does not have to have square corners) * What are some reasons immigrants decided to move west back in the 1800’s? * How do you make a samurai fold?

* How do you know when the climax of the story is taking place? (This is the part of the story with the most tension and the main character is typically tested in some big way. Often an important life lesson is learned.) FYI… * Our specialist schedule is as follows: Monday – Music Tuesday – Library Wednesday – P.E. Thursday – Music Friday – P.E. Please be sure to remind your child when P.E. (for shoes) and Library (for books) sessions occur. * I will be sending a weekly newsletter home via email each week. For those without email addresses, please go online to my website http://nsd.schoolwires.net/Domain/1483 and select the “Newsletters” button in the left menu list. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
