Slidell has its deli-cious bayou (Bonfouca) jam but the waterway’s food menu will expand greatly to include several food and drink courses in March during the new Festival Bonfouca. Ten food vendors, three whom participate in Jazzfest, will bring their offerings to the North-shore March 18-20th, along with local caterer Patton’s, who is just down the street from the festival grounds. The other vendors, all local, will include Chef Chris Case’s new food truck, Old School Eats.
Festival Bonfouca is the brainchild of artist Lori Gomez and promoter Jared Zeller, whose Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo for the past ten years has proved to New Orleans that Mid-City would support festivals in their area, having drawn 35,000 participants last year along Bayou St. John. It will take place in Heritage Park, home of the Bayou Jam, during the three-day weekend of March 18-20th. That means it won’t confl ict with the St. Patrick’s Day festivities which take place March 13th.
The festival programming will include diverse musi-cal entertainment,an Art Market, a Family Village and recreational activi-ties for the whole family, as well as the gustatorial offerings.
Big Freedia, Cyril Nev-ille’s Royal Southern Brotherhood, Marcia Ball, Sonny Landreth, Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band, Bag of Donuts, The Molly Ringwalds, Lynn Drury, Honey Island Swamp Band and Mike “Soulman” Baptiste & The Real Soul Band are some of the musical acts that will perform.
Heritage Park has been itching for a blockbuster late winter event to usher in Slidell’s beautiful early spring and this event promises to be the gateway. Tickets will be more than reasonable at $20 for a weekend pass and $5 or $10 for individual day passes. There are also a limited number of Founder Packages for $150, which includes admission to all three days of the festival, free private catering and a limited free private bar, a climate-controlled restroom, shade and stage-front viewing.
Tickets, cash or check only, will be available at Postal Plus!, 155 Robert Street, Olde Towne, 8:30 - 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday until March 18th or online anytime. Weeds in the home lawn can be a nuisance to those who put in the time and effort needed to keep a nice, clean green space around their home. Even though we mow at the proper intervals, irrigate when needed, and fertilize at recommended rates, sometimes annual weeds pop up and cast a shadow on all of our hard work. Crabgrass is one of the most commonly
talked about weeds in the whole country. How can one weed be a common problem throughout all of the climatic regions throughout the United States? One reason to explain the commonality of crabgrass issues across the US is the fact that it is botanically classified as a grass plant and all of our lawn grasses are also considered grass plants. Selective herbicides have the ability to eliminate grasses or broadleaf plants. There are many options available today. Fertilome Weed Free Zone, Ortho Weed B Gon Max for Southern Lawns, and Spectracide Weed Stop for Lawns are wonderful examples of herbicides that control broadleaf weeds without harming the lawn grass. One question left to be answered is how do you eliminate a grassy weed from a grass lawn?
The first line of defense should be to amend the soil according to what species of grass you are growing as a lawn. This will benefit your lawn by giving it the growing advantage and can be done through soil sampling and analysis. Provide the proper care and maintenance for your species of turf through supplemental irrigation, fertilizer applications, and proper mowing practices. Herbicides can add yet another layer of protection. Grassy annual weeds like crabgrass, goosegrass, barnyardgrass, and yellow foxtailgrass can easily be prevented using “pre-emergent” herbicides. This type of herbicide works by eliminating newly germinated seedlings before they grow into mature plants. There are several products available to the home owner including Scott’s Halts Crabgrass Preventer, Hi-Yield Ornamental and Grass Stopper II with Dimension, Sta-Green Crab-Ex, Greenlight Amaze, and Preen Weed Preventer. All are offered in granular form, should be evenly applied to the lawn, and watered in to activate as per label instructions. An application in mid-February will help reduce crabgrass later in the season.
Valentine’s Day is the perfect reminder to prune garden roses.
Bouquets of roses are often given as gifts on Valentine’s Day and what better way of reminding a gardener when to prune their own roses. Garden roses should be pruned late winter to encourage optimum growth and flower production. Over time, an unpruned rose will eventually become woody and will not flower like it once did. Make sure to use the proper tools when pruning roses. By-pass style hand pruners are very common along with loppers for larger cuts. Some roses have more thorns than others so hand and arm protection is a must. To start with the pruning process it may be helpful to know what type of rose you have. Shrub roses are more compact and can easily be pruned using hedge shears. Some examples of common shrub roses would include Drift and Knockout Roses. Climbing roses grow long stems to cover trellises and fence lines. Grandiflora, floribunda and hybrid tea roses all have the traditional growth when one thinks of rose bushes: old, thorny canes entangled in a mess.
Pruning should be thought of as a revitalization procedure aimed to remove old growth and allow for new growth to take over and flourish. Start with the hand pruners and remove up to 2/3 of the above ground growth from each cane. Try to make angled cuts directly above an outward facing bud without cutting into that bud. Examine these canes for health, good color, and spacing. The idea is to keep about 4-5 main canes coming out of the crown with fairly even spacing. This will promote good airflow later in the season when the plant begins to leaf out. Always remove broken and diseased stems during the pruning process. You can finish the process by watering in an application of a general all-purpose fertilizer. All that is needed now is time and patience. You will soon reap the rewards of proper timing and care as your rose bush puts on a show later this spring.

The 2016 Presidential campaign has been the most childish and boorish of the 15 contests I’ve seen in my teenage and adult years. On one side,we have an elderly Socialist sparring with a beleaguered former Secretary of State and nearly estranged wife of a former President while on the other we have a super-rich New Yorker who defies the courtesies of civilized discourse while attacking at will whichever candidate enters into his sights. We also have the last of the Bushes, which is sort of like having the last of the Kennedys, a slightly rumpled, slightly exasperated
governor of Ohio, a super laid-back neurosurgeon and the scions of two Cuban immigrants. This motley crew of eight may be joined by a Democrat or two before it is over but it is not looking pretty for the United States. We have more than a quarter billion citizens and this is the best we can do? The moderators of these debates are hardly moderators; the deeper we get into the debates the weaker the controls become from those hosting the events and asking the questions. Never has a campaign produced so many insults and insulting lines of questioning and never has a series of comprehensive, productive and clear platform points been so hard to come by. The Waffle House should sponsor all the debates. Many questions are loaded from the hosting network’s perspective and equal involvement of all candidates went out the window several debates ago.
What can we do about this sad state of affairs? Well, for one thing, the hosts should enforce their rules like an NBA referee and disallow a rude or uncooperative candidate to speak. Or give them a technical and usher them off the stage. The other thing we could do is to post the questions behind the candidates on the stage and require answers to them, not some political rhetoric that avoids the question. One political posturing could be allowed before the candidate would be ruled ineligible to continue. Why should America listen to what amounts to a dumb reality show when the stakes are so high? So what if the candidates know the questions beforehand? Then they could possibly format an intelligent, concise response not being influenced by someone else on the stage. Rebuttals could come once all candidates fielded the same question and the rebuttals would have to be conducted with decorum and clarity.
For me, there are way too many Republican debates and watching a strident, platform-lacking, sartorially challenged candidate against a short term folk hero senior citizen with even less of a believable platform than any candidate from either party on the Democratic side is just too much. Richard Nixon might have sweated on camera but he wasn’t insulting; Jimmy Carter fielded shots from Ronald Reagan with restraint, George Bush and John Kerry’s meetings weren’t an embarrassment to either candidate. Even Barack Obama and Mitt Romney’s 2012 face off seems light years away in decorum and courtesy compared to 2016. Is it too much to ask the grownups to come back in and run this country?

What’s a good dog to do when the only family he has ever had decides to move far away and not take him? That’s what happened to Zeus, a four and a half year old lab-Catahoula mix. So Zeus is making the best of the situation, but he doesn’t understand what happened and why he no longer has a home or a little boy to play with. Zeus is a very nice dog, house trained and well-behaved, he is also neutered and current on vaccinations. He loves people and gets along well with other dogs.
