Slidell has its deli-cious bayou (Bonfouca) jam but the waterway’s food menu will expand greatly to include several food and drink courses in March during the new Festival Bonfouca. Ten food vendors, three whom participate in Jazzfest, will bring their offerings to the North-shore March 18-20th, along with local caterer Patton’s, who is just down the street from the festival grounds. The other vendors, all local, will include Chef Chris Case’s new food truck, Old School Eats.

Festival Bonfouca is the brainchild of artist Lori Gomez and promoter Jared Zeller, whose Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo for the past ten years has proved to New Orleans that Mid-City would support festivals in their area, having drawn 35,000 participants last year along Bayou St. John. It will take place in Heritage Park, home of the Bayou Jam, during the three-day weekend of March 18-20th. That means it won’t confl ict with the St. Patrick’s Day festivities which take place March 13th.

The festival programming will include diverse musi-cal entertainment,an Art Market, a Family Village and recreational activi-ties for the whole family, as well as the gustatorial offerings.

Big Freedia, Cyril Nev-ille’s Royal Southern Brotherhood, Marcia Ball, Sonny Landreth, Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band, Bag of Donuts, The Molly Ringwalds, Lynn Drury, Honey Island Swamp Band and Mike “Soulman” Baptiste & The Real Soul Band are some of the musical acts that will perform.

Heritage Park has been itching for a blockbuster late winter event to usher in Slidell’s beautiful early spring and this event promises to be the gateway. Tickets will be more than reasonable at $20 for a weekend pass and $5 or $10 for individual day passes. There are also a limited number of Founder Packages for $150, which includes admission to all three days of the festival, free private catering and a limited free private bar, a climate-controlled restroom, shade and stage-front viewing.

Tickets, cash or check only, will be available at Postal Plus!, 155 Robert Street, Olde Towne, 8:30 - 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday until March 18th or online anytime. Curry’s Personality is Changing the NBAIIf you look at the National Basketball Association as a casual fan, you wouldn’t get as involved as you would in the NFL or Major League Baseball. The NBA has been a place where the petulant and the predatory athlete seem to exceed those performers who offer star power and prestige, such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal and Tim Duncan. There are too many spoiled children, super jocks with little history of time in a disciplined environment, many of them coming into the league with one year or even no years of college experience. No wonder those fans focus on the misadventures of Kobe Bryant and others while admiring the small cadre of players such as Duncan, John

Stockton and Kevin Durant, just to mention a few.

A few years ago, a spindly, injury-prone youngster signed with the hapless Golden State Warriors out of tiny Davidson College in North Carolina. This less than imposing physical specimen was Steph Curry, a 6 foot, 2 inch bundle of moves and maturity that has transformed the NBA into a must-see ticket at least once a week. Curry is one of two guards on the Warriors, known as the Dubs (short and cool for “W”, the Warriors) who lead a sizzling attack every game which has placed their team on the cusp of basketball immortality. Curry and Klay Thompson are known as The Splash Brothers because they splash the NBA nets with a regularity only matched by Oklahoma City Thunder teammates Durant and Michael Westbrook, the second best guard in the NBA behind Curry. They do so, leading their team to a 53 and 5 record with 24 regular season NBA games to go. No team has ever had such a record at this stage of the season and it projects to a 75 and 7 final regular season record. The best performance came from the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls in the mid-90’s which won 72 games and lost just ten.

The best game of the year in the NBA was played Saturday night in Oklahoma City as the Warriors beat the Thunder, 121 to 118 in overtime. Curry led the team with 46 points, 36 on 12 3-point goals, which only two other players have ever shot in NBA history. Curry is the greatest 3-point shooter in the history of the league, shattering all season records for the past two years and breaking his own record on Saturday with 24 games in which to shoot, ostensibly, another 110 to 130 3-pointers, bringing his total to over 400. Compare that performance to all but three TEAMS in the NBA - 26 teams don’t have 288 3-point goals this year, which is what Curry has.

Now Curry left Saturday’s game for about six minutes to tend to a twisted ankle and still scored 46 points. He has missed the entire 4th quarter of more than 20% of his team’s games, which has reduced his league-leading scoring average at least one and a half points per game. He is the second-best free throw shooter in the league, he is in the top 15 in assists, top ten for steals and rebounds very well for a guard. His passing ability might be his best talent of all. But in a league where three-point shots are usually taken within a foot of the 22-foot arc, Curry hits his 3’s from anywhere from 22 feet to 37 feet on a regular basis. He has hit several 3’s from mid-court of farther, which is well over 40 feet. And he looks and acts like your little brother, a leprechaun in blue and gold, with a few juke moves and shimmies but nothing really over the top and nothing in “your face” like so many professional athletes are wont to do.

Curry is the reigning MVP of the league and is a shoo-in to be the virtual unanimous repeat pick. No one can possibly challenge him, even in a league featuring at least a dozen Hall of Fame shooting and point guards. For these mere mortals are not the complete package of Curry, the spiciest player in sports. Westbrook is more explosive and physical, but he’s more business-like. Chris Paul has to be too serious in carrying the LA Clippers’ scoring load and gets annoyed too quickly. Kobe Bryant is walking out the door, James Hardin has no on-court charisma and the rest are just great athletes, plagued by uneven performances, injuries and attitude. Curry has it all. You can’t hate a kid who spent his formative years having fun, following his NBA father around the country and learning the game. Fellow Splasher Thompson’s father also was an NBA player but Klay was too young to be around the NBA courts when his dad played.

It’s so refreshing to hear a guy like Curry approach the game as a genuine person, not full of himself or trying to promote on-court showdowns between him and other players. Curry is just amazing at what he does. We are watching the Babe Ruth of long-distance basketball shooting, the casual seriousness of a driven player who has revolutionized the game and the league. He’s the studiousness of Peyton Manning, the playfulness of Cam Newton (without the Superman b.s) and the clutch of Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. His work ethic is close to Rice’s, who, along with Walter Payton, had the toughest training regimen in recent sports history. He makes it look easy and effortless. And he makes it fun. He’s the “ooooh and ahhhh” of Ruth, Jordan and Rice. He is Steph Curry and there is simply no one close to him. Even Pete Maravich couldn’t get off shots like Curry, although Pistol Pete was probably the equal of Curry in 3-point goal percentages and a better passer. But Maravich never played in the 3-point era, which is a shame because Curry would have to break all of Pete’s records. Watching Stephen Curry is by far the best entertainment value in professional sports. There simply hasn’t been anyone so dominant like him in what he is paid to do.

Thanksgiving 2013. At the edge of my fork sat the last of Mom’s beloved pumpkin cheesecake. I stared at it with a deep, wistful yearning—my cheesecake was off to war, and I might never see it again. But it was actually me that was going to battle. With my own sugar addiction.

“You know that’s your last bite of anything sweet for the next 30 days, right?” (Lip quivers) “Yes.”“And you know you can’t keep a candy stash in your desk anymore?” (Hands tremble, eyes dart nervously) “Yeah...”“Are you sure you’re going to be able to kick sugar for good?” (Collapses)

That may not be exactly how my boyfriend remembers the day. It was our last dessert together before we officially started the Whole30 that kicked off our new Paleo diet, a diet devoid of my ultimate weaknesses—refined sugars and carbohydrates. But in my sugary holiday haze, I’d believe it.

Hi, I’m Carolyn, and I’m a sugar addict. But when my boyfriend and I decided after weeks of research to elevate our commitment to healthy living and go full-blown Paleo, it was something I knew I had to do. We all laugh about our sugar addictions, our sugar cravings. But to your brain, sugar is a drug like any other, firing off your brain’s reward and pleasure centers like crazy, so even when you down a carton of ice cream, you still want more. I wanted to take back control, and adopting the Paleo lifestyle was one way to do that. I was in.

It was difficult, don’t get me wrong. Once a fruit lover, I became a fruit monster, gobbling up sweet berries and satsumas to satisfy my cravings from the get-go. After the Whole30, I got friendly with refined sugar substitutes, like honey, coconut sugar, and coconut nectar, which let me indulge while still keeping to my new diet.

But once you’ve looked a Twix bar in the face enough times while saying, “No, you chocolate-covered caramel cookie goodness, I do not want your refined sugar and glucose syrup in me!” (Yes, out loud. Yes, in public.), your mind and body start to change. The cravings you thought would follow you to the fridge forever fade into the background. When you hit the self-checkout line at the grocery store, you don’t even see the candy stands anymore.You’re free. For now.

I certainly have my days where temptations overwhelm me. Mom’s Thanksgiving pumpkin cheesecake. My sisters’ dueling banana breads. A late-night chocolate bar when I’m backed up against deadlines. And, general rule of thumb: When a precocious 11-year-old baker makes you crème puffs from scratch—you eat one. And when they (honestly) turn out to be the best crème puffs you’ve ever had, you eat four.

Nobody’s perfect, and I’ll be the first to admit it. But being Paleo more often than not has taught me a lot about the mental and physical efforts behind staying in control of your cravings. And for those times that you do reach for a juicy organic apple or honey-drizzled almonds instead of cheap and easy refined sugar, being in control makes it that much sweeter.

Although no foul play is suspected, Slidell Police believe that Ms. Loisel is in imminent danger and is asking the public for help with locating her. You Say Potato, I Say Find an Alternative This St. Patty’s DayShepherd’s Pie, Irish Beef Stew, Potato and Leek Soup—the list goes on for potato-heavy recipes that ring in one of the greenest holidays of the year. But this St. Patrick’s Day, instead of using your meal plan to make up for years of Irish potato famine, consider alternatives to the humble white potato, which is being knocked out of the healthy foods club by many trending diets today. Here’s why.

The Great Potato DebateOne of the major drawbacks of white potatoes is the blood sugar spike that comes after eating them. A Russet Burbank (your typical white potato) baked without butter or other fat has a glycemic index of 111—nearly double the glycemic index of sucrose and high fructose corn syrup (both 60-65). Potatoes carry one of the highest glycemic index values of any food, which means eating them causes your blood sugar to skyrocket—and later crash—and your blood insulin concentration to surge along with it. Put your body through these glycemic swings too consistently, and you can become insulin resistant, a precursor to metabolic syndrome diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. Antinutrients in potatoes called saponins can also contribute to a condition called leaky gut, which can lead to chronic inflammation and other complications. That said, potatoes do contain valuable nutrients that opponents are quick to forget, including vitamin B6, potassium, flavonoids, and vitamin C. Still, if you’re avoiding carbs, starches, and blood sugar spikes, pass on the white potatoes this year.

What Should I Eat Instead?Enough science talk—what sustenance should you have with your Guinness instead? If you don’t have control over the menu, stick to the meats, traditionally pork sausage, beef, lamb, or bacon, and other common Irish veggies like cabbage and carrots. If you’re the big Irish chef this year, here are some more nutritious potato substitutes:• Cauliflower. Steam or roast chopped cauliflower florets and blend with milk and butter (not margarine) in a strong blender or with an immersion blender to create creamy whipped faux mashed potatoes. Or, lightly steam or blanch them for potato salads. • Parsnips. Same preparation goes for a parsnip mash, but this root vegetable stands on its own with its sweet but hearty flavor and a texture that can just pass for traditional mashed potatoes. Chop parsnips into bite-size chunks to replace potato in stews.• Turnips. Turnips have a texture similar to potatoes and make a great oven-baked “fries” substitute. Mash or dice them for roasted dishes, stews or hash browns.• Rutabagas. Rutabagas are comparable to turnips, and the two can usually be substituted for each other. However, rutabagas are high in sugar and sodium while still having about half the calories and carbohydrates as white potatoes.If you’re being diet-conscious this St. Patty’s Day, don’t worry—you can still enjoy plenty of Irish foods and drinks without consuming a single potato. Last quick tip: Keep the artificial green food colorings to a minimum. With any Irish luck, that green beer has been tinted with spinach or spirulina extract, for your diet’s sake.
