Slidell has its deli-cious bayou (Bonfouca) jam but the waterway’s food menu will expand greatly to include several food and drink courses in March during the new Festival Bonfouca. Ten food vendors, three whom participate in Jazzfest, will bring their offerings to the North-shore March 18-20th, along with local caterer Patton’s, who is just down the street from the festival grounds. The other vendors, all local, will include Chef Chris Case’s new food truck, Old School Eats.
Festival Bonfouca is the brainchild of artist Lori Gomez and promoter Jared Zeller, whose Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo for the past ten years has proved to New Orleans that Mid-City would support festivals in their area, having drawn 35,000 participants last year along Bayou St. John. It will take place in Heritage Park, home of the Bayou Jam, during the three-day weekend of March 18-20th. That means it won’t confl ict with the St. Patrick’s Day festivities which take place March 13th.
The festival programming will include diverse musi-cal entertainment,an Art Market, a Family Village and recreational activi-ties for the whole family, as well as the gustatorial offerings.
Big Freedia, Cyril Nev-ille’s Royal Southern Brotherhood, Marcia Ball, Sonny Landreth, Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band, Bag of Donuts, The Molly Ringwalds, Lynn Drury, Honey Island Swamp Band and Mike “Soulman” Baptiste & The Real Soul Band are some of the musical acts that will perform.
Heritage Park has been itching for a blockbuster late winter event to usher in Slidell’s beautiful early spring and this event promises to be the gateway. Tickets will be more than reasonable at $20 for a weekend pass and $5 or $10 for individual day passes. There are also a limited number of Founder Packages for $150, which includes admission to all three days of the festival, free private catering and a limited free private bar, a climate-controlled restroom, shade and stage-front viewing.
Tickets, cash or check only, will be available at Postal Plus!, 155 Robert Street, Olde Towne, 8:30 - 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday until March 18th or online anytime. Tickets may also be available on Saturday and Sunday, March 19th and 20th, at 155 Robert Street, during the day. An update on this situation will follow in our March issue.

It’s an epidemic of crassness, rudeness and social bullying that personifies this presidential race. And we’re not talking just about the candidates.Leading the way is the generations of so-called liberal thought, where someone with views unlike yours are subject to the same treatment as folks received from the Nazis, Communists and suffer today from Muslim terrorists. Case in point is the disruption of the Chicago rally for billionaire and businessman Donald Trump last week. Some compared it to the 1968 Democratic Convention in the Windy City but the comparisons don’t add up. In 1968, a post-World War Two generation
of young folk, tired of being put on a shelf by their elders, tired of true inequality and fed up with what this country considered waging war with two no-win conflicts in Korea and Vietnam, joined with a handful of professional protesters to voice their concerns. The Democrats at the time were the party of the status quo, getting ready to ramrod Minnesotan Hubert H. Humphrey as their candidate for the presidency in a city run by Mayor Richard Daley, perhaps the most powerful Mayor this country had ever seen. The protesters were later memorialized by the Graham Nash anthem, “Chicago” (We Can Change the World) following the riots and Chicago 7 trial that summer. You might not have been an Abbie Hoffman or Bobby Seal fan but the visceral appeal of actually seeing your parents beginning to realize that the world was changing and your generation would have a role in it was overwhelming.
Those who remember the summer of 1968 remember it as a watershed season, preceding Altamonte, Woodstock, Kent State and the sea change in popular music, both with new artists and groups and with the songs from established stars like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Elvis. It was, in a summer, a major shift in the American psyche among those of us under the age of 30 and the beginnings of generational understanding for those over 30 between the war babies and early Baby Boomers. Last week’s Chicago protest was a joke, a copout by a city and a candidate not willing to stand up for the right to express themselves. Fear rules our so-called leaders and leaders-to-be. Is this what we’ve been reduced to? It’s bad enough that most of our candidates are childish and without substance, facing indictments, charges of misdeeds and with little of what the parties used to call planks in their platform on which their candidates were standing. Today, there are no platforms…..just selfies, Facebook and emotional verbiage. Too often the candidates dress like they’re at a casual party to show us what regular folks they are or dress poorly because they apparently don’t feel that appearances are that important. None of them evoke memories of JFK or Ronald Reagan, appearance-wise.
As in 1968, our nation is fed up - this time with both major political parties who obviously are in bed with each other. That emotional charge has neutralized candidates of measured recourse by eliminating them in the primaries or creating an atmosphere where their relatively calmness and professional demeanor might be trampled by the undisciplined masses. So they sit on the sidelines as we listen to discourse which would make our forefathers blush or bluster with indignation. And in November, we might get what many of our enemies think we so richly deserve - a non-presidential President - a dreamer, bully, criminal, uninformed egomaniac - one or many, take your choice, either party. It will be a time of nervousness for most citizens, to see what this country’s choice can do and will do….and what, if any, difference it will make in our relationships with ourselves, our friends and our enemies.
Once we feared 1984 as the year of a complete Communistic takeover around the globe. 32 years later, we’re much closer to that 1984 scenario than we’d like to imagine. Our Pollyanna course of a double standard in conducting our affairs has emboldened our enemies and critics to the point that communities like Dearborn, Michigan can mock this country and we accept it because we are afraid not to. Nancy Reagan’s most famous three words were “Just Say No”, a reference to not using drugs. Without those words, our drug epidemic would be even greater than it is. What we need to do as a nation is to dust those three words off and direct them towards those activists who have no real skin in their game of making us tremble. Get a backbone, get a pair, get a point of view. Grow up or wither and die. Our enemies are poisoning the well every day. Let’s dig another well of freedom and respect our differences without rancor. And kick the bastards to the curb.

With all of the rainfall received in southeast Louisiana this past week, be on the lookout for brown patch disease in your lawn. The greening up phase of our lawn grasses is one of the most important throughout the whole growing season. These grasses were dormant during the winter months and will now start to continue growing. Brown patch disease is prevalent in both the spring and the fall. It loves warm days, cool days, and an abundance of water. It will show up as large circles
of yellow turf that eventually turn brown. It does not kill the grass but rather attacks the foliage causing plant stress. If left untreated, this disease can spread rapidly throughout the entire lawn.
The best treatment is obtained through the use of granular type fungicides. There are several different active ingredients available at garden centers that are labeled to control this disease. Timing is critical. Apply fungicides at first sign of yellow circles. Treat the entire yard to contain the disease and to keep it from spreading. If this disease has been an annual problem in your yard, it may be advisable to apply treatments on a preventative schedule.
Azalea Care and MaintenanceIt is the time of year for the azalea bush. Azaleas flower buds are starting to swell and some have already started blooming. Take this time to not only enjoy the display but to also plan your maintenance strategy for the oncoming growing season.
Like all other spring blooming shrubs including gardenia, indian hawthorn, and viburnum, azaleas should be pruned after they finish flowering. These early spring bloomers set their flower buds for next year during the summer months. If pruned too late in the year, the flowering schedule will be disrupted. You may remove anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 of the plant at this time. Once finished apply a general use fertilizer and water it in thoroughly. Inspect the plants throughout the growing season. Azalea lacebugs can be a serious issue during the heat of the summer. They can easily be avoided with an application of a systemic insecticide in the spring. Spider mites and scale issues can also arise. They are best treated using soaps and oils. Late in the fall, red headed azalea caterpillars can completely defoliate the bush. Look to use spinosad or Bt (Bacilius thuringiensis) to provide good control. The best advice is to be observant
Raised beds and containers make use of small spacesSometimes we don’t always have a large backyard or big field to grow fresh vegetables at home. That doesn’t mean that it can’t be done. Raised bed gardening has grown in popularity over the past ten years. Their small size and ease of construction make them appealing to many gardeners short on space.
The depth of a raised should be deep enough to provide for a good root system. I recommend 12 inches but you can get away 8 inches. Keep the width of your bed to 4-5 feet. You should easily be able to work the bed from both sides without having to step inside. The length depends on the space you have. The most common size I see are 4 ft X 8ft. You can use any type of material to build a raised bed. Some common examples are landscape timbers and reclaimed wood, but I recommend using treated 2 X 12 boards for their size and ability to resist decay. Do not worry about using treated wood. Back in 2003 the EPA banned the use of wood treatments containing arsenic, a decision made by industry leaders back in the 1990s.
Containers are another alternative to small spaces and like raised beds any container will do. The key here is to make sure you have drainage holes in the bottom. An old 5 gallon bucket can support a makes a nice home for a tomato or eggplant. You can also look into growing in Earthboxes. They provide a moisture wicking system to help with watering. These planters are very user friendly and are meant to maximize small spaces. They can be found at your local nursery or garden center.

Hope all is well and you have all been crafting away. I have been making a lot of plans for upcoming craft shows but really haven’t been doing a whole lot of crafting. We have decided to pass on the spring shows, for now and focus on the Fall and Winter shows. I am really excited that O.L.P.H. has decided to have a Craft Fair this year in October! It will be in conjunction with the O.L.P.H. School and Church Fair. The Craft Fair will be on Sunday. I am so excited about this that I have already reserved a spot! I can hardly wait!!!! Choosing what to make is top priority. And I think I better get Ronnie to start cutting wood before I change my mind on some really cute ornaments. If there are any crafters out there who would like to be a part of O.L.P.H.’s first Craft Fair, you can email me and I will gladly give you the info. you need (I don’t have permission from the chairperson to put her name in my column). But I can email you the application she sent me. I promise, you will have a great time just being there!
Okay, let me tell you a little something about what I have done for today. Things have been really crazy and to be honest, time just kind of crept up on me. I was worried about my sisters, and 3 nieces who lived on the North Shore and what they were going thru and honestly, crafting was not on my mind. When I finally checked my emails, there was the reminder, my column was due. I had no no idea what I was going do. I gotten in some pattern packets of bunnies that I wanted to paint for my granddaughter and our great nieces and great nephews f o r Easter. Only problem, Ronnie never had a chance to cut the wood I needed. Well, that’s okay because I could paint it on just about anything. I went digging in the craft room and found a “Star”. So, I decided to put one of the Ginger Bunnies on it. I don’t think it came out too bad for a rush job. What do you think? This is a Pamela House design, another of my favorite artists. She designs the cutest ornaments!
