Following a huge groundswell of opposition and ridicule, the ivory tower set in Baton Rouge decided that the sidelines of Tiger Stadium could “be made safer” by allowing the halftime appearance of both football school’s bands on a staggered schedule. They also decided to move the visitor’s band seating closer to the field to expedite the maneuver. The uproar followed a pronouncement that no longer would visiting bands be allowed to take the hallowed field of Tiger Stadium at halftime because the sideline congestion had created a dangerous situation. In nearly 90 years of games, there had been no incidents of bands creating a hazardous condition unless you consider the LSU football players who knocked
a couple of band members from the opposing team on their keisters a few years ago when the band lallygagged on the field after their allotted time was up (or was it the LSU band that did the same to a few opposing football players who refused to yield the field following their allotted time? I really don’t remember). But it was funny and justified and none of us fans were considered haters for feeling that way.
LSU had lost one band’s appearance for this year and you can bet that several other contacts from visiting programs in the past week made a “come to Jesus” pitch to AD Joe Alleva and perhaps others in the tower. Not only would this have served as another slap in the face to LSU’s loyal fan base but it was a harbinger of things to come when LSU’s Golden Band would become tarnished by not being allowed in such places as The Swamp, Bryant/Denny, Jordan/Hare and the big concrete tavern just south of The Grove in Oxford, Ms. The one thing the tower folks are savvy about is lost revenue and this would have been a real negative spigot for the Tigers’ bottom line. So the three hundred extra seats taken up by the band that the big boys might have been counting on to sell to the seatless believers will remain with the school on a pro bono basis for the band. An appearance by Three Doors Down with less than optimum stadium acoustics was no replacement match for the loss of the Texas A&M Marching Band last November. This band’s performance is worth the price of admission; only Ohio State’s halftime performance challenges the precision and pure entertainment value of the Aggies, whose movements reportedly cannot be duplicated even by a computer. Speaking of computers, maybe its time for the guys calling the shots in Baton Rouge move away from their computers and start identifying with what Tiger fans want to see and experience in their stadium….that is, fans over the age of 22. We’re the ones paying the freakin’ bills, Joe. Don’t forget it!
The other smart move of the week was the hastily created new contract for Paul Mainieri, he of the most successful athletic program over the past ten years at LSU. Mainieri, who makes more sense in one sentence than Les Miles could ever make in a lifetime, was chafing over the fact that lesser baseball coaches were making far more moolah than he. And when Texas, with its deep pockets, came calling, it was time for the Tigers to pay up or say goodbye. Fortunately, those few cooler heads with any gravitas in the athletic area were able to come up with a seven-figure contract that should keep Mainieri in Baton Rouge for the next eight seasons. Could this be the start of a trend where the boys and girls in Istrouma Town actually grow up and become responsive? We can only dream, just like we can only dream about a real contest between two SEC qualified quarterbacks for the Tigers. When’s the last time that happened? Oh….almost forgot. No Tiger athlete has been censured or arrested during this six-month offseason for such trivial
activities such as assault, theft or breaking and entering. It evens appears the Tigers may be shut out this year in the race to see which SEC school has the most thugs or immature fools in their athletic dorms. Georgia currently leads, a legacy move following the departure of Mark Richt, he of the pure heart and mind who now plies his trade in Miami, where nary a player EVER has had an issue with the courts or the law. Things are looking up in Tigertown, where only Les Miles can keep the Tigers from winning most of their games and where the baseball team probably keeps enough talent to be a preseason favorite #1 in 2017. Basketball? Say, do we still have a basketball PROGRAM?! We have the semblance of a team and no overrated Australian super hero to lead us not to the Holy Grail but to the Holy Hell of continued mediocrity. Basketball will have to wait a while longer until its leadership parts are replaced with quality stuff. Right now, the only quieter place than the Maravich Center in November through February on campus is the Library as the Tigers limp into the 2016-2017 season with little in the cupboard. Have a nice life, Ben Simmons. We won’t remember you soon.

Things in a Row! A funny thing happened on the way to Golden State’s second consecutive NBA title last week: It didn’t happen. Not because of injuries or bad coaching, not because of a lack of superior offensive talent, not because of a number of things. They got stomped in three games, score-wise and physically, and outlasted in a fourth and final game because of an athletic freak of nature who finally used a poor choice of words by an otherwise stand-up Golden State All-Star, Klay Thompson, to secure Cleveland’s first basketball championship. Thompson, half of the Splash Brothers, essentially dissed LeBron James after the Warriors took the first two games of the series in Oakland and it converted the drive of a proud man who returned to his birth land to win a title for the downtrodden Cleveland fan base from a normal quest to an angry quest to win. And it worked. Thompson should have known better and the Warriors would probably have the title today. But the Dubs, who turned into the Duhhhs! in the last three games of the series, were squarely in the sights of a man whose NBA career has polarized more fans in the past 12 years than any other player in the league’s history. Forget the move to Miami, the commercials, the pre-game chalk dust routine: the self-proclaimed King proved he was a King for All Postseasons with a five-game (forget the first two contests) performance unmatched in NBA lore. The man was magnificent and LeBron haters are blind if they don’t see it.
This year, James had help from Kyrie Irving, who proved he was as good a postseason guard as the league offers. He totally outplayed everyone else on the court except for James. This year, Warrior injuries (Andrew Bogut in the post, Steph Curry still favoring his knee, Andre Iguodala with a bad back) had an effect on the team, along with a near-fatal one game suspension of Draymond Green in Game 5.
Both teams have work to do. Cleveland needs a better guard contingent; the Warriors need a real power forward to go with Green, a power forward lite because of his size. Improvement in the post will come in the draft and it looks like at least three Warriors will either not be with the team in 2016-17 or will play a backup role. In any case, don’t look for any more incredible records from the Warriors or Curry. They really can’t do much more than this past season. They won 88 games, including 15 playoff games. They played 106 games. Now Cleveland gets to remove their name from the sports trivia board and the city which once had one of their rivers catch on fire, was the setting for both Major League movies and the town that lost not one but two professional football teams to cities where they later won Super Bowls (the 1999 Rams and the 2000 and 2012 Ravens) can rest easy…until July, when they will be Trumped for several days as the Republicans come to town.
The Cavaliers finally used the Cleveland baseball Indians’ old mascot, Chief Wahoo, on the basketball court in the literal sense of the name. They certainly got a big “Wahoo!” out of their long-suffering fans back in Cleveland. Cleveland’s also the home of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Well, “Roll over, Beethoven, and tell Tchaikovsky the news”. The Cavaliers say “We Are The Champions”. Golden State says “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction”. And the long 52-year wait for Cleveland sports fans? “It’s Over”.
