Make sure your neighbors, friends, and relatives know how many pets you have and the names and contact numbers of the individuals who have agreed to serve as emergency caregivers. SUMMER INVITES UNWANTED LAWN PESTS
The heat of summer brings with it two very pesky insect pests of southern turfgrasses and a few others that never get an invitation to the annual family picnic. Mole crickets and cinch bugs will typically start hatching around the first week in June with the juvenile growth stages causing the majority of damage from now until the end of September. Look for brown, dead patches of turf occurring during late summer and into fall. Mole crickets damage plants by borrowing throughout the root systems of turfgrasses and disrupting their function while chinch bugs feed on plant fluids inside the leaf. Mole cricket damage appears to be random with visible, raised trails while chinch bug damage will occur in drier areas (e.g. areas near large hardscapes like sidewalks and driveways. Proper cultural practices should be followed including applying supplemental irrigation and the implementation of a soil fertility program are helpful in managing this insect problem. Chemical control is available if needed. Look for products labeled for use on home lawns and list mole cricket as a target insect. Both bifenthrin and carbaryl (two active ingredients labeled for mole cricket and chinch bug control in home lawns) are highly effective when applied during the proper time.

SUMMER SUN
Usually by August most of our landscape plants are looking slightly beat-up and exhausted. In fact, when temperatures exceed 90°F even plant life will experience heat stress and its consequences. Some call August, Louisiana’s second spring. Dead head your existing plants that are still surviving and apply a general all-purpose fertilizer to give them an extra boost as the temps start to lower next season. This will lay the groundwork for revitalization. If you have some dead areas and are looking to replant with something that will provide you with some good color for the remainder of the season try lantana. Many of us experienced gardeners know of the tough landscape plant we referred to many years ago as ham and eggs which got to a considerable size. The ‘Bandana’ series of lantana offers the same heat loving plant, but in a more manageable size. They will grow to a height of 2 feet and about 2 feet wide. Plant in an area with well-drained soil and receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. There are several different shades of white, yellow, pink and red available. Look for ‘Bandana Cherry’, ‘Bandana Cherry Sunrise’, ‘Bandana Landscape Gold’, ‘Bandana Lemon Zest’, ‘Bandana Light Yellow’, ‘Bandana Peach’, ‘Bandana Pink’, ‘Bandana Red’, ‘Bandana Rose’ and ‘Bandana White’.
AZALEA LACE BUG CAUSES SPECKLED APPEARANCE IN AZALEA LEAVES
Those of us who fertilize our azalea plants a couple of times during the growing season know all too well that the light colored appearance of azalea leaves during this time of year are caused by s little insect known as an azalea lace bug. You will typically notice the lighter green appearance from a distance. Upon closer examination you will notice that instead of a generally lighter color of green you see a speckled or mottled distribution of many small white or silver colored spots. When you flip the leaf over to examine the other side you will notice very small brown and white specs. This is how you can tell if you have an infestation or not. LSU’S MEDIA DAY TURNING INTO“WE DON’T NEED YA” DAY By Tony Onellion
There was a time not too long ago when a trip to Baton Rouge for Media Day was something to look forward to. The school would have the media come into the practice facility, serve us a picnic style lunch and give us an hour or so to hobnob, compare notes and generally socialize with other sports writers, videographers and sports personalities from around the state. One year, the school had the lunch catered with hot dishes! It was very nice and very professional. Then the media would enter the football team meeting room where Les Miles first would present his four to seven minute soliloquy on the upcoming season, answer about a dozen questions from those gathered and walk out, allowing, in turn, his offensive and defensive coordinators to have the floor for about 15 minutes each and perform the same duties.
Then the media would leave the meeting area, walk through the locker room and into the indoor practice field where every player, including those before and hereafter unquotable true freshmen, would be fair game for any and all questions without any coaches or team personnel hanging around.The media would be given an hour, perhaps ten minutes longer, before the session would end and the players herded into busses to be transported to a fan media day venue. Two and a half to three hours was the going rate and many fine stories were filed and connections made during those sessions. No more.
Last year, the school eliminated the coordinator question and answer sessions in the team meeting facility, instead choosing to station the coordinators on the field, where reporters had to choose between players or the coordinators and be in danger of missing a live comment by a coach during the hour and a half long session. Before, all coordinator comments were made in the meeting room unless an enterprising scribe decided to buttonhole one of them on the practice field for an additional question or two. The longer on the field session last year helped make up the difference in having the coordinators answer all questions on the field. But this year, the entire Media Day experience lasted 90 minutes.
All venues were done between 3:30 and 5:00 PM, or slightly sooner, because Fan Media Day was to start at 5:00 and it took some time to gather the team personnel for the trip.For most reporters, this is the only time they will have to interview a large selection of players and certainly the only time they will be allowed to interview freshmen. Something’s got to give in this new world of media mayhem and this year it’s the time for the variety of comments any one publication or outlet has to record statements from players and coaches for a personal view their readers, listeners or viewers can enjoy. For a team that has gone from 8 and 0 to 6 and 2, 5 and 3 and 4 and 4 in SEC league play in the past four seasons, this could be considered an attempt to limit any critical questioning about LSU, its players (especially quarterback) and allows Les Miles to continue to perfect his vagueness and jabberwocky speech patterns.
For like so many coaches, Les realizes the magic of his best seasons (2007 and 2011) may be gone, lost in an over-conservative mindset to keep his teams’ offense out of the spotlight. There is something definitely wrong when a major college team’s passing attack becomes so ineffective that the head coach continues his nonsensical approach to answering questions that are legitimate and fair.
Miles treatment of the media is petty and indicates the man is approaching a crossroads at LSU. There is ‘way too much talent in Baton Rouge not to expect more competent performances and consistency on the field. Miles can attract all the new coordinators he wants but without their ability to function independently from their boss for much of the season, it really doesn’t matter who comes in to coordinate. The mere fact that this team would consider Lane Kiffen as an offensive coordinator does not bode well for any changes in the regime’s attitude towards moving the ball on a consistent and varied basis, providing excitement and always a chance to win in each and every contest. Not when Kiffen has imploded, first at Tennessee and then at Southern Cal, where the man was fired on an airport tarmac at 2 in the morning and left to
his own devices to find a way home. Yes, he did a wonderful job at Alabama last year, but he was under the tutelage of college football’s most intense, complete coach - Nick Saban. No one in the NFL is chasing after Kiffen, who had his time with the Oakland Raiders and is considered more than a bit controversial. Do you really think a guy like Kiffen could co-exist with a micromanager like Miles, even without his personality baggage?
Miles best hope is that Felipe Franks, the incoming quarterback next year, or some unnamed prep signal calling savior, will appear in Baton Rouge to turn this program’s offense around. Saban isn’t much better at recruiting impact quarterbacks than Miles. But Saban allows his competent staff to develop their QBs and not shame them to the bench when one comment or action is not to The Hat’s liking. There really hasn’t been a player spokesman for this team in several seasons. It’s time to see if Year Two of the Boom Box Stadium and Year Three of Cam Cameron can make the fans enjoy the offense once again. For without the fans, the mighty 102,000 plus stadium is just a cold concrete edifice near the Mississippi River.
Four years ago, I wrote a first of the season column entitled “The Oregon Trail”, in which the team’s destiny was realized by year’s end, save for one total whack job in the Superdome. This year, the column could be called “The Orgeron Trail,” because the former Ole Miss coach, Ed Orgeron, will have to provide the spark and fire to make this team climb up the SEC West standings. Once considered a man who didn’t like LSU, Orgeron seems happy to be in Baton Rouge after spending a year out of coaching. If his intensity is as good or better than the first three years of John Chavis’s, then the Tigers have the man they need to make their defense as respectable as in 2011. And it should be. No disrespect to Chavis, who did his job for most of his stay in Tigertown. But if the LSU offense continues to be average to mediocre, at least we’ll have Orgeron for entertainment.
