Back in the mid-80’s, LSU had the most potent corps of receivers ever. Led by the Kinchen boys, Todd at wideout and Brian at a smallish tight end, the Tigers could beat you any which way.

Their best receiver was Wendell Davis, a man who could catch the back end of a football and who might have had the best hands in the history of college football. Davis could beat you like Jerry Rice. The fastest player was Sammy Martin, an Eric Sproles type player who would burn you on a deep route over the middle. Rounding out the fivesome was Tony Moss, whose biggest claim to fame was the catch in the fourth

quarter against Auburn which led to the famous ”Earthquake Game”.

The 2014 Tigers, however, might be even better. None of the five players from 28 years ago was a prototype NFL receiver except for Davis, whose career was cut short when he blew out both knees on the criminally inadequate Philadelphia Eagles field early in his career. The current Tigers

are led by sophomore Travin Dural, who kind of reminds me of Megatron Lite. He plays taller than his 6’2” frame and his catches are anything but pedestrian. The number two guys are several: true freshman Trey Quinn, a cross between Wendell Davis and Todd Kinchen, redshirt freshman John Diarse, whose strength and hands remind me of Antwon Boldin of the San Francisco 49ers and true freshman Malachi Dupre, whose style hasn’t been determined at this early date but soon will. All of them have speed but Dural is the fastest.

That would be enough, because I haven’t mentioned the tight ends and won’t until the Tigers get serious about drafting a tight end receiver and letting him develop as such. But the Tigers also have Quantavious Leslie, a JC transfer senior, who has moved out of the two deep because of the talent of the youngsters, Avery Johnson, a redshirt freshman coming off an injury but as yet to see the field and true freshman Tony

Upchurch, a fine specimen at 6’2” who anywhere else would have been given at least a look-see.

This is an embarrassment of riches greater than the blue chip talent pool of running backs at Alabama. There simply will be no way to cover a four or five man set with these kids. And then watch the way Leonard Fournette and Terrence Magee catch the ball out of the backfield. This stable would make Drew Brees drool.

Look for offensive coordinator Cam Cameron to finally get the upper hand with his boss and coach, Les Miles, and watch the aerial display about to happen all season long. With a sophomore and true freshman quarterback tandem, both with great arms and a veteran offensive line to pass protect, the Tigers could smash all their individual game and season passing marks and produce the most prolific offense in the modern era. In place is an offense that could have easily produced the firepower to earn LSU the national championship it should have won three years ago if they had only had a developed quarterback.

These guys also look to drop fewer passes than the Beckham/Landry combo from the past three years, especially Beckham. Both Quinn and Dupre are nationally recognized top freshmen and Dural and Diarse have the means to be truly great. They’ve all seen the field and they all have performed exceptionally well for their age and experience.

Words to GROW by!PRUNE ROSES IN LATE SUMMER

Roses are generally pruned around mid- to late August in North Louisiana and in late August or the first week in September in South Louisiana. This pruning is not as severe as the one done in late winter, and it prepares roses for the outstanding October/November blooming season. For vigorously upright-growing hybrid teas and grandifloras, this pruning is particularly important to control height and produce a more pleasingly shaped shrub. These roses should be pruned back to about 2 to 3 feet (cut back larger, more vigorous cultivars at the lower level). Remove any dead canes and thin weak canes the size of a pencil or smaller.

Old garden roses, such as China, Bourbon, Noisette, Tea and others, would likely benefit from a late summer pruning, but such pruning is more optional. Trim these roses as needed to keep them shapely and the desired size. Modern shrub and landscape roses also may be pruned now. Generally, these roses are cut back about one-third their height, but the amount of pruning is generally determined by the situation and desires of the gardener. It is particularly important to cut back any especially long, vigorous shoots that make the shrub look less shapely. Bushes that are pruned to keep them smaller will need more pruning than those that can be allowed to grow to their natural size.

It is also a good idea to fertilize roses at the time they are pruned. Choose a con¬trolled-release fertilizer that will feed the roses over an extended period. Using fertiliz¬ers that contain systemic insecticides and fungicides may help control these pests during the fall bloom season.

ENGLISH PEAS FOOD FOR THE HOME GARDENThe garden pea or English pea as we call it in the South is a cool season crop, one of the legume family. It thrives in cool weather with ample soil moisture.

To produce a successful fall crop of English peas in Louisiana, peas must be planted early enough for the crop to be harvested before the first heavy frost and late enough so that the plants are not blooming while the temperature is too high for proper fruit set. Young plants will tolerate considerable cold and light frosts, but the flowers and green pods are often injured by heavy frost.

The entire month of September is the best time to plant English peas. Most varieties require 70 to 80 days from planting until they are ready to be harvested.

Varieties recommended for planting in Louisiana are Wando (a non-staking type), Thomas Laxton and Premium Gem. Other varieties should be grown on a small basis to determine if they are adapted to this part of the country.

A new variety and type of pea that should be given a try is Sugar Snap. This variety is an All-American selection, meaning that it was outstanding in plantings made all across the nation. The pods of Sugar Snap are quite fleshly and edible. They’re similar to snap beans. The plants will attain a height of 4 to 6 feet and will need a fence or trellis for support. They are harvested in the fully mature, green stage, which means many more edible pounds per unit of garden.

English peas respond to organic matter added to the row before planting. They are very sensitive to drought and also to water-logged soils; therefore, where soil drainage may be a problem, build a high row. Be prepared to irrigate if rainfall is not sufficient. This crop, just as most other legumes, prefers a slightly acid soil, although it will not tolerate excess soil acidity.

Before planting English peas, apply 2 to 3 pounds of a complete fertilizer such as 8-24-24 per 100 feet of row. No additional side-dressing of nitrogen is necessary.

One or two drills on a row is suggested for planting English peas. Plant the seed about 1 inch deep and about 2 inches apart within the row. If two drills per row are planted, space the drills 8 to 12 inches apart.

Most varieties need some type of support, such as a trellis or fence. The variety Wando, is a bush type pea that doesn’t need a trellis to run on.

When harvesting English peas, pods should be picked when fully grown and well developed and before the peas start to get hard.
