BARGAINS PLUS! READERS: For the past 23 years and change, many of you have been picking up our publication religiously, every two weeks. Our audits show that your readership percentages exceeds national averages for a niche publication like ours and that your income, education and active age range is superior to the average area resident.
Over the past several years, Bargains Plus! has been making changes in its editorial makeup, placing more articles and columns along with the original staple of this paper - classified ads. Classified ad volume has dropped because of internet presence and other factors. Classified advertising has never been a huge factor in this area, even before the internet. But we wanted to offer a free ad service for the non-business residents and so Bargains Plus! was born in 1991.
Today, however, is a new day. For one, we never anticipated how many folks have trouble spelling “bargains”. Most of the misspelled versions are “bargins” and a few are “bargans”. We know in recent years we have never received countless emails and most likely tens of thousands of unspent advertising dollars because of this. For another, many advertising buyers look at our name and consider our publication in less than a favorable light. As I mentioned, our audits show our readership superior to most other publications in this area in terms of education, stability and income. So that perception is bogus.
We’ve considered a name change for several years. We want to keep our publication as the leading source of print classifieds while expanding its editorial appeal into the general niche publication marketplace. You will always be able to place your classified ad with us free or at the best price in the market. And our focus will be to present our product to our Northshore readers and our Plaquemines Parish area readers, plus surrounding areas such as St. Bernard and Pearl River County, Mississippi. Our revised name will reflect both the general geographic regions PLUS the surrounding areas… Northshore Plus & Plaquemines Plus!
Our paper will still be a bargain.

MEDIA DAY PROVIDES FEW ANSWERS IN PREDICTING LSU’S 2014 SEASON
by Tony Onellion LSU’s Media Day format provides a challenge to beat writers and columnists these days. The old system of a media lunch, followed by the head coach and both coordinators speaking and taking questions has been altered to eliminate the lunch and only having Coach Miles speak and answer questions in the team meeting room before reporters meet with the team in the indoor practice facility.
Ostensibly, this gives reporters more time to buttonhole the coordinators and more time with the team. Last year, it worked better because the reporters had 90 minutes with the team, which included unfettered time with the true freshmen, the only instance that LSU allows media to talk with them during the season. However, this year the time frame was limited to a total of 90 minutes, including Miles’ time, with Coach Miles doing his best impersonation of a budding stand-up comic and answering, as is his nature, few, if any, direct questions.
Miles told this reporter he was trying to enjoy life more but it still appears Miles is trying to avoid any sense of commitment to his fan base when it comes to candid commentary about his team. This year also featured the largest turnout of Media Day reporters since the first year of Nick Saban in Baton Rouge. About 140 media folks filed into the facility, compared to the 70 or 80 that usually make the trek. The extra numbers proved necessary as most of them were part of the staffs which usually send fewer reps. This year’s format demanded more bodies in more places to get the same number of stories that could be had in previous years.
What we do know is that the offensive line will be in great shape with ten deep talent and nearly that much experience, with two players showing the versatility of playing all three line positions and the best tackle tandem since 2011. We know the quarterback position is in the hands of two freshmen, one of whom is the most articulate and confident true freshman to talk to me since I’ve been doing this Media Day gig. That the running backs are two seniors and two true freshmen (including Leonard Fournette, the number one prep player from last year), and the receivers nearly all true freshmen with two very green underclassman/senior fighting to maintain a starting role against three extremely talented youngsters who were playing high school ball this time last year. That the tight ends still have little to look forward to in
the passing game as four of them will fight for blocking time and a slim chance of catching one of the less than two dozen balls that will be thrown their way in a typical LSU season.
Defensively, the Tigers will be sorely tested inside with thin prospects at tackle and little more at defensive end. We learned from Miles that Memphis product Frank Herron is “a beast” at tackle and should win the open defensive tackle position next to Christian LaCouture. The linebackers are still undersized, like Chief Chavis likes them, except for Kendell Beckwith in the middle, who still can’t beat out D.J. Welker as the starter. Meanwhile, the best linebacker prospect from last year, Melvin Jones, gets to play backup fullback for the next four years instead of using his massive (for LSU) 255 pound body to stiff opposing skill position players.
The best place to look for taint is the secondary, where Rashard Robinson is the LSU Lite version of Patrick Peterson and Tre’Davious White takes the role of Tyrann Mathieu without the drama and highlight reel plays. Safety is in the hands of the Jalens (Collins and Mills) and others, such as Ronald Martin, and LSU will be looking to true freshmen to come in early and even win one or both starting positions over the competent but paler versions at safety than LSU is used to seeing in the past five to ten years. No Eric Reid, Chad Jones or Laron Landry hiding here.
Special teams remains strong with punting and place kicking in capable hands one more year while kick return and coverage teams do outstanding work every game. Of course, Odell Beckham Junior needs to be replaced there but the speed candidates are on campus.
What the Tigers have to fight off is the worst front half of a season ever concocted by the LSU schedule makers. A road trip to Houston (actually counting as a home game) to play Wisconsin - inside the Texan’s Reliance Dome, begins the season. That August opener - not exactly the august opening in the sterile Houston environment - is followed by four very weather hot but appeal cold contests at home…Sam Houston State, University of Louisiana at Monroe, Mississippi State and finally Kent State, where Saban played his college ball. An underwhelming wow. Then three more home contests against Kentucky, Ole Miss and Alabama, sandwiched between road trips to Auburn, Florida, Texas A&M and Arkansas comprise the season. Don’t expect much more than the usual Florida location bowl trip again in January unless the passing attack is allowed to flourish and the Tigers can get some front seven defensive religion by October.
Miles best recruiting work was securing Brandon Harris from Bossier City as his now and future quarterback. This kid is sharp and athletic and Miles admitted as much in response to my question that place Harris as the most articulate and promising quarterback ever recruited by Miles. If Harris works out, Miles may be able to enjoy life a little more this year than in previous seasons. So may the fans, who have had their grief with Miles and his handling of quarterbacks Zach Mettenberger, Jordan Jefferson, Jarrett Lee, Andrew Hatch, Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Perilloux and others over the past nine seasons.

Words to GROW by!AUGUST – BUSY MONTH FOR
LOUISIANA GARDENERSAugust is a busy month for Louisiana home gardeners. It is the beginning for the fall planting season, and some summer crops still are going strong.
Several crops will still be going and should be protected from pests and nurtured with water and side-dressed fertilizer. Crops commonly carried over include okra, peppers, many of the vine crops and southern peas.
Tall okra plants should be pruned back 2-3 feet and fertilized to encourage a new flush of growth closer to the ground.
Stake or cage tall and bushy peppers to support their weak branches and to maintain production.
As for other areas of the garden, August is a good time to clean out weeds and to consider fall planting.
If some parts of the garden are out of production and full of perennial weeds, you may choose to use a herbicide containing glyphosate to kill these weeds. Spray these areas when growing conditions are good, and allow the weeds at least 10 days to take up the herbicide before turning the soil.
To get more production out of the garden this year, transplant tomatoes and bell peppers in South Louisiana, but they need to be planted as soon as possible.
Seed or transplants of broccoli and cauliflower can be planted now. Other crops commonly seeded in August are cabbage, Chinese cabbage, collards, pumpkins, snap and lima beans, shallots, southern peas, greens and Swiss chard, cucumbers, squash, Brussels sprouts and Irish potatoes.
As you see, it’s going to be a busy month for Louisiana gardeners. But get your crops planted early enough to enjoy their full production before the first frost ends the season.
ALGEA, LICHENS, MOSSESBOTHERSOME ON PLANTS
Algae, lichens and mosses grow profusely on trunks, limbs and twigs of many trees and shrubs. Cloudy, wet weather in Louisiana is ideal for growth of these organisms.
Algae are the simplest of green plants. They were probably the first food-producing organisms to live on earth.
Algae are present nearly everywhere and are numerous almost any place that has sufficient moisture, such as on tree trunks and twigs, shrubs, soil, rocks and walls, as well as in fresh and salt water.
In large numbers, algae forms as “scum” on ponds or as a green or red stain on the ground or on trees and walls.
Lichens have two components—a fungus and an algae living in association with one another to give the appearance of a single plant. Lichens grow on soil, trunks and branches of trees and shrubs, and on rock. Rarely are they found in water. They occur in several forms.
Some lichens are leaf-like; others resemble a tuft of horse hair hanging from the branches, and others are crusty. They are usually grayish-green.
With stems and foliage, mosses have developed further into miniature plants. They also can manufacture their own food. Mosses occur on soil, tree trunks and branches, rocks and in water. Liverworts are closely rated to the mosses and grow under similar conditions.
Since all of these primitive plants contain chlorophyll and make their own food, they do not directly injure the plant on which they grow. Heavy growth, however, may have a “suffocating” effect and can reduce the sunlight reaching the leaves.
Some people like the hitchhiking plants because they add a bit of color to the landscape during the winter. At times, however, the growth becomes objectionable or unsightly, and it is desirable to control.
The presence of algae, lichens and mosses on plants often is an indication that the plant has poor vigor and is growing slowly. Check drainage around plants with excessive numbers of free-loading organisms. Also, check for poor soil fertility.
The presence of algae may indicate too much fertility and wet areas in the landscape.
To control these pests, consider the following:
1.Copper fungicides can be applied to the trees or shrubs to control lichens. Check manufacturer’s label to see if it can be used on the plants in question.
2.Solutions containing two tablespoons of five percent household bleach per gallon of water can be sprayed on algae. Wash off the chlorine solution after five to 10 minutes. DO NOT apply household bleach to flowers or succulent plants.
3.Mosses often are more difficult to control. Usually, trimming overhanging branches to let some sunlight through will stop their growth.
It always seems to come in threes: the loss of celebrities within a week or so of each other. So it was with the most famous of the three, Robin Williams, who had the quickest, most creative wit since Jonathan Winters; Lauren Bacall, who had to have been the most sophisticated sexpot teenager in the history of movies and Ed Nelson, a local man who started in New Orleans and became famous as a television doctor.
Williams was from Chicago but lived most of his life in the San Francisco Bay Area - Tiburon, just north of the city in Marin County. Williams’ life has been thoroughly reviewed during the past ten days. He always wanted to please people and had his passions. One of those was the San Francisco Giants. When the team was auditioning for a new public address announcer about ten years ago, Williams was at AT&T Park, egging on the applicants, doing what Williams does best. He didn’t do it just for a few applicants; he did it for all 44 who got to work the mike at the stadium. No money, no reviews. Just a guy having a little fun in a venue that he never had a chance to work.
B a c a l l was the Bacall in “Bogie and Bacall”, the famous couple who met on the set of Bacall’s first movie and whose chemistry ignited Humphrey Bogart enough to divorce his third wife and marry Bacall. The relationship lasted more than ten years before Bogart died in 1957. Bacall’s roles with Bogart were her best: she never created the fire afterwards in movies such as “How to Marry a Millionaire”, the stage play “Applause” or with John Wayne in the 1954 adventure “Blood Alley.” In the latter, Bacall played the 29-year old love interest to the 49-year old Wayne in a story about the evacuation of mainland Chinese nationals by riverboat to Formosa. It wasn’t a great movie by any means but it was one very special to me - it brought me my first-ever paycheck (as an extra) and a chance to play someone else, if only for a couple of “takes”. It was my second of three meetings with “The Duke” and the only time I got to meet Ms Bacall, who played the star’s role to the hilt on the set. I was only a kid and it was my first time on a location shoot. My uncle Murphy - a Hollywood director - saw to it that my sister and I and his older sister - my mother - got to visit many movie sets. But only my sister and I had the chance to actually be “in” a film. She did several before moving to England in the 1970’s and pursuing a different life.
My sister had a chance to act in small roles on a few “Ozzie and Harriet” shows, a popular ’50’s sitcom starring the former bandleader, Ozzie Nelson, his singer wife, Harriet, older brother David and rock heartthrob Ricky Nelson, who, at one time, had more hit records than Elvis Presley and still ranks among the top ten all-time best selling rock artists. Ricky’s father created the first music video
for his son back in the late 1950’s. During that era, the Nelson boys and some other Hollywood types participated in a charity football game in the Los Angeles area with another Nelson, not related - Ed Nelson. Ed was a New Orleans native who had been the first floor director at WDSU TV and who followed Roger Corman to Hollywood after appearing in a series of famous “B” movies created by Corman in the early 1950’s in New Orleans. It was in Hollywood that Nelson became Dr. Mike Rossi, the co-star of the long-running television series, “Peyton Place”. That series also starred Mia Farrow, Ryan O’Neal and Barbara Parkins and was television’s top-rated show for more than three years and had over 500 episodes filmed. Nelson and his wife, Patsy, moved to Slidell in 1998 to be close to his teaching jobs in Gulfport and New Orleans. We were fortunate to meet Nelson when he visited my wife’s business back in 2004 and we did a two-part interview with him in November of that year. After losing their Slidell condo in Katrina, the Nelsons moved to Monroe for a few years before
moving to North Carolina to be closer to the family of one of their six children. Nelson was always a family man first. He wouldn’t let his kids listen to rock and roll in the house and he was a strict father in their viewing habits, especially with him being on television. He leaves those six children and Patsy and a lifetime of memories.
My favorite role of Nelson’s came in the blockbuster movie, “Midway.” In that film, Nelson’s character was that of a Naval intelligence officer who was approached by Charlton Heston, a fellow naval officer whose son had fallen in love with a Japanese girl. During World War II, America isolated Japanese families in secured camps after Pearl Harbor and Heston wanted the girl to go free because of his son’s involvement. Nelson’s character agrees to do so after a contentious scene and Nelson’s parting line to his friend Heston was “This washes it with us.” Most of the acting was punctuated with powerful looks from Nelson, especially his eyes. Nelson’s eyes were electric on the screen - on a par with Clint Eastwood’s and Kirk Douglas. He was 85, Bacall 89, Williams 63.
