The weather conditions were ideal for a game of golf and brought out 16 competitve teams. The competition proved fierce as each group sought bragging rights to this coveted event.The day included laughter and countless high fives as the competitors attempted to master the difficult yet entertaining contests such as the nearest pin competition and the longest drive.Overall, the day mixed business with pleasure while raising funds for a deserving charitable organisation.

Surge in units drives record resultNew data on housing approvals has revealed the changing nature of Australia’s real estate market.The number of dwelling approvals reached a record 19,282 in January, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.That marked a 9.1 per cent increase on the previous year and a 5.7 per cent increase on the previous record result of 18,245, which occurred in November 2014.Approvals for private sector houses fell 2.9 per cent to 9,449 – but this was more than offset by private sector multi-unit approvals, which jumped 23.6 per cent to 9,566.January 2015 was only the second time that approvals for units have exceeded houses. However, Housing Industry Association economist Geordan Murray said this was not due to the poor performance of the detached house market.“Changing consumer preferences, demography, affordability challenges and aspects of the policy environment are all contributing to the current situation where a larger share of new homes are in the form of [an] attached dwelling,” he said.Mr Murray said a sharp spike in unit approvals in Queensland had combined with solid levels of unit approvals in NSW and Victoria to lift the national total.“These three states typically account for around 80 per cent of all multi-unit residential buildings and when you have all three performing strongly, it’s a recipe for a strong national result in this segment of the market,” he said. Nicholas Pound, residential executive director at the Property Council of Australia, said most states are seeing an improved pipeline of potential activity.However, Mr Pound warned that there is an emerging issue around building approvals not converting to actual starts due to costs, delays and obstructive policy settings.“That’s why reform is so vital – to ensure that the high approval numbers are translating into construction of the new homes needed to meet demand and keep a lid on process,” he said.“And it’s yet another reason why we can’t afford to be discouraging foreign investment, which is so critical to turning approvals into actual builds.”Source: REBonline

‘Super’ or ‘not so super’ real estate ideaUsing superannuation funds to help first home buyers get into the housing market is attractive at first glance but closer examination reveals high costs experts warn.The idea has been used in Singapore and Canada where retirement schemes were opened up to certain types of real estate purchases. Prime Minister Tony Abbott says given its use overseas and the fact that it is an idea that has been around for a long time, he is happy to consider the subject describing it as a ‘perfectly good and respectable idea’.Experts in the field are cautious.Respected economist Saul Eslake from Bank of America Merrill Lynch argues it would drive up house prices.“The idea of allowing people to dip into their superannuation in order to buy a first home means only that people would have more money to spend on their first home than otherwise which would result in first homes and other homes becoming more expensive. We know from the experience of the last five decades the only beneficiaries of that are people who already own at least one home rather than people who are trying to buy their first home.”The superannuation industry believes overseas examples haven’t worked.

According to CEO of the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia, Pauline Vamos, Canada found the plan impacted on final retirement savings.“We have urged everybody as they start this conversation to exercise caution” Ms Vamos told SBS television.“It was a significant detriment particularly in Canada on the final retirement of many people in the Canadian system. We have to understand our system is not fully mature. For most people the only way they are able to build an adequate retirement, enough money to fund themselves all the way through retirement, is to put a little bit away over the longer term because that is how they access compound interest. If right at the beginning any money is taken out and put for other purposes in future dollars for a young person it could be a drop in over $260,000 in their final account balance. ”Prime Minister Abbott says it is an idea worth talking about.“It is something that I am very happy to see further debated but there are obviously some issues around it and let’s fully consider it. At this stage we don’t have any plans to introduce it.”Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen has rejected the idea.“This is another thought bubble which seeks to undermine superannuation.”Source: sbs.com.au

Warning on payroll tax scam scamBusinesses in NSW, Queensland and the United Kingdom have today reported receiving scam emails threatening imposition of penalties for unpaid payroll tax and including a link to a fake Office of State Revenue (OSR) webpage.NSW Chief Commissioner of State Revenue Tony Newbury said his office had received numerous reports about the scam.“The initial scam email is a poorly worded ‘notice of reassessment’ and refers to a penalty tax of between 15 to 19 percent with interest calculated on a daily basis,” he said.“It includes a link titled More Information that leads to a fake but convincing OSR page.“When you click further into the fake page your computer will be corrupted and infected with a crypto locker virus, with a ransom demand to reinstall files.“OSR has tested the scam email and found it destroyed all files on a computer.”Mr Newbury warned people not to open the attachment if they receive one of these scam emails.“This involves a very malicious virus,” he said. “Don’t respond to the demand for a ransom to have your files returned as this will involve you providing your financial details to criminals.“Any legitimate OSR emails will come from official email addresses that end with nsw.gov.au.“These latest scam emails are coming from [email protected]“Criminals have used the OSR brand in recent weeks to attempt a number of scams including callers impersonating officers from a fake Department of Finance, offering $7,000 refunds and attempting to gain personal information including dates of birth.“Last week scammers issued fake speeding fines via email to consumers in Australia and overseas.“They are relentless.“If you’re unsure of whether any email or phone call is legitimate, call OSR on 1300 139 815.”The Office of State Revenue has referred the scam and fake webpage to AUSCERT (https://www.auscert.org.au/).Reports in NSW have come from Sydney city business as well as businesses in Engadine, Rydalmere, Rosehill, Wollongong, Rose Bay and Pyrmont.
