The proposed design uses curvilinear form to elevate pedestrians and bicyclists to the top level of the platform. A “resting park” exists mid-level as a place to enjoy the journey and access commercial space. Flexible, culturally sensitive programming includes food, fun, and education. New, mixed-used structures serve to animate multiple spatial zones.Systems-level design focuses on preserving and improving natural resources.

REVISIONING PENN’S LANDING WATERFRONTPHILADELPHIA, PA

For Penn’s Landing, the physical barrier of Interstate 95, the lack of visual connections, noise, and an undefined destination has led to decades of underutilized, lackluster space. This design aims to bridge the highway by extending the city grid with a cap over the highway to the river. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to create a landmark and iconic space as the entrance to Philadelphia. Activation will occur through commercial, retail, residential, and office space. This mixed use proposition facilitates use for many purposes, during all seasons, and through various hours of the day.

STREETSCAPE DESIGN

This design aims to alleviate the current combined sewer system by reducing cso’s. Annually, Pittsburgh dumps some 10 billion gallons of raw sewage into their three major rivers. Through a combined approach, this corridor design addresses stormwater by creating areas for infiltration, daylighting the historic stream, and bringing the water down to the Monongahela river without entering the current combined system.

MASTER PLAN

WATERFRONT CONNECTOR

Additional design goals were honoring the industrial history of the site and fostering the green connection between South Side Park and the natural heritage trail along the waterfront. The master plan is pictured below with rendering details showing the

streetscape design and waterfront connection with the daylighted stream terminus.

STREETSCAPE DESIGN WITH DAYLIGHTED STREAMThis rendering depicts the space delineated for pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles, stormwater infiltration, and the daylighted stream.

THE RAIN WATER CAFEThe cafe serves as an opportunity to educate the public on issues of stormwater on site. The green roof adds insight about runoff and the use of native plants. Additionally, it continues to strengthen the connection between the river and South Side Basin.

SOUTH SIDE BASIN WETLAND GRADING PLANCascading pools and a lined wetland manage stormwater from the surrounding topography (see construction details and grading plan).

THE GREEN RIBBON TRAILMONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA

ERADICATION

This design studio focused on the Green Ribbon Trail, a floodplain trail that closely follows the Wissahickon Creek. The creek and trail exist in a highly urbanized environment and are subject to regular, intense flooding. The design goals of this project were aimed at improving the trail conditions, bettering the plant communities, enhancing access points, and bringing more visitors onto the trail.

SECTION THROUGH WETLAND

Calcareous fens, a type of wetland, are comprised primarily of sedges. These are open, sedge-dominated systems usually occurring on organic substrates made of sedge peat. PH levels range between 6.0 and 7.9. A limestone quarry upstream of the Wissahickon creek makes the surface water alkaline and provides conditions for this wetland to thrive. Microtypography in the design allows for a range of plant species depending on their hydrologic needs.
