artist statement

the blank canvas stares at me. it intimidates me and it owns me.

it makes me feel small and overcasts above my head. i am

trapped. but then a magical thing happens. i piece together the

inspiration that i am able to find in my everyday life. the world

around me dims down and i am big again. i face the canvas.

my thoughts and dreams flow like hot, thick blood pulsing

through my veins. these veins control the muscles that control my

arm. this translates into my artwork. there is one very prominent

theme within this portfolio: me. various mediums were used in

the presented pieces because I enjoy working with many different

materials and in many different forms. i am constantly inspired

by the world around me.

please, enjoy.

construction drawing of shears

medium: pencil

done: cornell university summer college

size: 26 x 40 inches

this piece incorporates the movement of the

garden shear (opening and closing), as well

as the movement that the operator must per-

form in order to cut a stem or plant (the arc).

i had a great time creating this technical

drawing that also shows a side of creative

thinking.

a vessel for garden shears

medium: chipboard, basswood sticks

done: cornell university summer college

size: 64 x 4.5 x 6.5 inches

this vessel was created to fit the unique shape

of the garden shears. as one drags the shears

through the tracks created out of basswood

sticks, the interior of the shears are filled

with the unique shape of the chipboard at

that given moment.

a place of contemplation on a cliff

medium: chipboard

done: cornell university summer college

Size: 38 x 18 x 8 inches

the inspiration for this piece came from the

previously presented garden shear vessel. the

individual arcs in the design are simple, yet

come together to create an intricate and ele-

gant composition. the tracks in which the

bases of the arcs are placed also came from

the original vessel.

construction drawing: a place of contemplation on a cliff

medium: pencil

done: cornell university summer college

size: 80 x 26 inches

this drawing was completed after i constructed a place of contemplation on a cliff. some elements were changed, such as the varying the spacing between the arcs, as well as the depth with which the cliff extrudes or intrudes. this tech-nical drawing incorporates improvements from the cliff model.

shearing

medium: chipboard

done: cornell university summer college

Size: 6 x 2 inches (bas-relief)

4 x 4 inches (cube)

two models are shown on this page. one is

the bas-relief that served as a model for the

shown cube. these models express the archi-

tectural word: shearing.

relax

medium: charcoal

done: art class

size: 24 x 18 inches

the piece above demonstrates the serene at-

mosphere the model creates with her relaxed

facial expression and the way her hand falls

gently on her upper thigh. the focus of the

piece just below is the model’s back; i aimed

to accomplish the flow of the spine and the

shadow that rests on the model’s back com-

ing from her right arm.

model

medium: charcoal

done: art class

size: 24 x 18 inches

this model has been my favorite to work

with. she is extremely expressive, which i

aimed to portray in this piece. the arch of

her back paired with the prominence of her

collar bone are important elements of her el-

egant pose.

una ragazza molto bella

medium: oil pastel

done: art class

size: 24 x 18 inches

this portrait is of nora, an extremely im-

portant friend of mine. the title of the piece

is in italian (she is very proud of her italian

lineage), meaning one very beautiful girl. the

piece is expressive of who she is as a person:

beautiful and sweet. my favorite part of this

portrait is her eyes – they are colorful, just

like her personality.

medium: acrylic on canvas

main focus of the bird.

bunny

medium: pastel

i used pastel to draw this bunny. the goal of

draw folds within fabric.

pot, vase, bottle

medium: pastel

done: on my own

size: 18 x 20 inches

i drew this piece while experimenting with

the shine and shadows in each of the objects.

pots and bottles

medium: charcoal

done: on my own

size: 24 x 18 inches

i completed this piece while experimenting

with different color charcoals. i enjoy work-

ing with different shades of charcoal, allow-

ing highlights to pop and darks to blend.

pumpkins

medium: crayola markers, white paint

done: art class

size: 18 x 12 inches

this piece began as a contour drawing. i

then proceeded to color in the tones of the

pumpkins with various shades of yellows and

reds. lastly, i created a surface and a back-

ground, giving the overall piece a 3d effect.
