School Board GoalsEach year in July, District 100 school

board members hold a day-long “retreat” to assess the status of current board goals and to set new goals for the coming school year - and beyond. Below are some of the short-term goals the board has agreed to for FY11.

Curriculum1. Intensify preparation for enhanced

Math and Science programs at the high school.

2. Continue to move forward with RtI programs in grades 6-12

3. Continue to update and improve the Junior High and High School guidance programs.

4. Develop a formal program to address drop-out rate and credit recovery

5. Improve student success on ACT and other testing.

6. Make decisions related to the continuation of the current textbook rotation plan.

Finance1. Continue current effective fiscal

practices.2. Prepare for productive collective

bargaining wi th the teachers’ association.

3. Review and compare the non-certified employee salary structure.

4. Explore projects that may be completed using TIF monies.

Building and Grounds1. Finalize a decision regarding the sale

of the Old Wyoming High School.2. Consider repair or replacement of

windows at the Stark County Junior High School.

Board Governance1. Consider options for maintaining a

positive board succession.2. Evaluate and review the best use of

board committees.Other

1. Develop a formal drug and alcohol prevention/intervention program.

2. Examine grant opportunities for the establishment of a police liaison

officer.• • • • •

The school board has developed timelines and measures of success for each goal and as the school year progresses, the administration and staff will be working to implement programs necessary to meet the board’s objectives. Throughout the year, the board of education will assess the status of each goal and determine if a goal has been met, if the method for addressing a goal needs to be revised, or if the period for implementation needs to be extended.

If you have questions about the board goals, please feel free to give me a call at 695-6123 or you can email me at [email protected]

Once again, thank you for your help and your support with all of our programs.

Salute toVeterans

Pebby Scott, Leah Fairfield, and Laura Scott were in attendance at the “Salute To Veteran’s” Program at the high school. Pebby and Laura are from Bradford. Leah is from rural Toulon.

Danielle Kenney, Joel Rice, Corinna Wyant, Taylor Wilkinson, Theodore Fritch, Jasmine Wyant, Dakota Kubiak and Zach Leezer, band members at Stark County High School, stand in the serving line at the Salute to Veteran’s Day Program at Stark County High School. Veterans and active military members from the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy were present.

Jim and Brenda Shelley attended the event. Jim and son Eric are veterans.

Juniors in Mrs. Amy Milroy’s United States History Class volunteered to assist with the annual Salute to Veterans Day program. Here, Brooke Cochran, Teryl Adams and Samantha Pearson assist with drinks at the ceremony.

When Teachers and Families Work Together, Kids Learn

The website of the Illinois Education Association – www.ieanea.org – has provided some useful tips for parents. Visit their website for more information.• Homework1. Eliminate distractions at homework time – no texting,

Renee Wallace Every Child, Every Day, Every Dream

Stark County Elementary Principal

– www.ieanea.org – has provided some useful tips for

TV, Facebook.2. Be part of the homework routine.

Adults can read, and their students can study simultaneously. This conveys the importance of life-long learning.

3. Before starting homework, have your child explain the task. It helps him/her focus.

4. Talk to your child regularly about what’s been learned so far, and listen to the answer. You’ll learn incredible things.

• SleepWell-rested children are better able to

focus, so insist on a good night’s sleep. Studies show children ages 6-9 need about 10 hours of sleep a night,

while pre-teens need a little more than 9 hours.

• General Tips1. Stay in the school loop by reading

school or teacher newsletters and the school website. If your student’s teacher has a website, visit it often.

2. Communication is crucial. Talk to your student’s teachers. If your child knows you are interested in his progress, he/she will take a bigger interest in completing assignments.

3. Instead of trying to teach your child methods you used in school, make an appointment with your child’s teacher to fi nd out what methods work today.

Veterans are so amazing. Thank you Veterans. Every veteran does something, and every little piece counts. If it feels like nobody cares that you served, think again because deep down inside we can’t thank you enough. If you got injured in any type of way or if you feel bad don’t, you should not feel bad. That means something, and it’s that you served.

Just remember every piece counts. Love your friend,Tristean Delynn Hulsey

Donate to Help ChildrenMy dad and I were cleaning, and we found tons of hats, mittens, clothes, and

coats that I don’t need. So then I got an idea to donate these things to a program that takes hats, mittens, clothes, and coats.

The Salvation Army sounded like the best one. All the stuff you donate goes to boys and girls who don’t have these things. If you are interested in donating, there will be boxes that will be going to the Salvation Army at 117-119 West Court Street, Toulon. These boxes will be at my dad’s offi ce, The Rennick Law Firm. These boxes will be taken to the Salvation Army once all the boxes are fi lled. Please, please, please help us give boys and girls nice clothes, mittens, coats, and hats to wear. Please donate between 9 am and 4 pm. Please help me fi ll the boxes to help children.

Thank you.Brooke Rennick

Red Ribbon WeekBy Mitchel Martin

In the last week of October, we held a drug awareness week.

On Monday, we wore crazy socks to “Sock it to Drugs.”

On Tuesday, we made or wore our own boots to “Stomp Out drugs.”

On Wednesday, we wore nature shirts to remember to “Enjoy a Natural High.”

On Thursday, we wore pajamas to “Wake up to a Drug Free Life.”

On Friday, we wore Rebel clothing to “Rebel Against Drugs” and show our school spirit.

Be smart, don’t start! That is the lesson we will try to remember and live by.

1st Graders Hold Family Reading NightOn Thursday, Nov. 18, Stark County Elementary

hosted a 1st Grade Family Reading Night. First Graders and their families learned about the Accelerated Reader (AR) Program.

Throughout the evening, 1st Graders read AR books and then took a computerized test over each story they read. The evening ended with each child receiving a new book of their own!

Mrs. Turnbull read to the 1st Graders the AR book The Little Runaway. Children and family members alike enjoyed listening to the story.

Jacob Best reads to his family, Kurtis and Christine Best and sister Lauren, before taking an AR test.

James Groter reads to his parents, Mary and Bob Groter.

Colby Carroll takes an AR test while his dad, John Carroll, watches.

SCES held a Veterans Day program on November 10 to honor our local veterans and family members of students. Students decorated hallways with banners, art and writing and filled a display case with veterans’ pictures. They presented a program and recognized veterans through songs, poems and a short play. Students and vets enjoyed refreshments and visited classrooms. The program is organized and directed each year by music teacher, Laura Bennett. Above, Third Grade students salute veterans singing “She’s a Grand Old Flag.”

Sammy the Scarecrow

By Christopher RoarkOnce there was a

scarecrow named Sammy. His job was to scare away the crows from the pumpkin patch. He was sad because he was on a pole. One night there was a storm. A lightning bolt hit a nearby tree. The tree knocked Sammy off the pole, but he did not know how to walk. He then found out that not only could he walk, but he could also fly!

Then he thought about landing, but he didn’t know how to land. He crashed into a pumpkin patch with crows all over it. He got up, and the crows flew away. He wondered why they did. Then he remembered what his job was. Hey, I should do this for every patch, thought Sammy. So he flew off to save all the pumpkin patches.

Family A poem by Karsyn Rewerts

Mrs. McCauley’s nd grade

My mother broke her back from stepping on a crack.

I tried to help her with her math But she said, “Aaaaahhhhh!” My father broke his back from stepping on a crack. I tried to help him with his backpack But he said, “Aaahhhh!” My brother broke his back from stepping on a

crack. I tried to help him with his word sack But he said, “Aaaaahhhhh!” I broke my back from stepping on a crack. I tried to get back But I said, Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!”

2nd Grade Reading Day!!!! By Olivia Bessler

Reading inspires us. Reading gives us needed information. We also like to read for entertainment.

On Nov. 9, 2010, all the second graders at SCES brought many books, their favorite blankets and pillows to school. The two classrooms had been cleared of desks and chairs, so the students could spread out their blankets and pillows and read on them all day long. Students read to themselves, to partners, to teachers and listened as “Mystery Readers” read books to them.

Some of the “Mystery Readers” included Principal Renee Wallace, Superintendent Jerry Klooster, and P.E. instructor Mr. Scott Hooste We all love to read!!!! Don’t you?

Parents Club Rewards Sales Leaders with Limo Ride

Paren ts Club he ld the i r fa l l fundraiser. Students sold 554 magazine subscriptions. Mrs. McCauley’s second grade class sold the most. Those students who sold 10 or more subscriptions during the first week won a limo ride and lunch at the Rebel Inn.

Students who qualif ied were: Makenna Smith (not pictured), Kylee Frisby, Paige Rewerts, Lilee Dennison, Larissa Nenadov, Cameron Watson, Ethan Unhold, Marley Hillan, Kelsey Berthtold, Caden Daum, Ryan Bogner, Hope Hogsett, Tea Olmstead, Lauren Jones, Madison McDermott, Ashlee Rynearson (not pictured), John Interial, Clayton Howard, Kylee Lindley, Troy Hippen, Emily Fairfield, Michell Herridge, Mallery Pearson and Grace Hicks.

Mrs. Daniels’ grade class (above) donated 6.1 pounds of candy for troops.

Trick or Treat for TroopsOn Nov. 1, when most kids are sick from eating too much

candy, SCES students brought in pounds of it to donate to troops. Five classrooms donated over 20 pounds each (George, McCauley, Knowles, Nowlan and Daniels) with one second grade room (Daniels) donating 26.1 pounds.

A total of 237.2 pounds was donated for troops. We have already heard from some happy soldiers who are deployed and missing home who have enjoyed receiving the packages.

This idea began with the Health & Wellness Committee which is planning fun fitness and health activities for the school community.

First Graders in Mrs. Gilles’ First Grade dressed up as Pilgrims and Indians. Throughout the month of November, they have been learning about The First Thanksgiving.

Drama in the 2nd GradeBy Charles Slightom & Matthew McCauley

The second graders in Mrs. Daniels’ class did three plays.

The plays were called: How the Camel Got His Hump; Earth’s Seven Continents; and How the Elephant Got Her Long Trunk.

Our plays required lots of props, costumes, and practice.

From left, rear: Teachers Stacy Unhold, Mary McCauley, Carrie Boelens and Nancy Smith. Front: Makenzie Snyder, Ally Dennison and Mitchell Martin (partially obscured) pose with some of the sweet treats.

Grade school students are lined up and ready for a limousine ride to the Rebel Inn for lunch.

The Abraham Lincoln Award

The Abraham Lincoln Award is awarded annually to the author of the book voted as most outstanding by participating students in grades nine through twelve in Illinois. The award is named for Abraham Lincoln, one of Illinois’ most famous residents and himself an avid reader and noted author.

The Abraham Lincoln Award is designed to encourage high school students to read for personal satisfaction and become familiar with authors of young adult and adult books.

Students who read four books out of 22 will receive an Abraham Lincoln Illinois High School Book Award 2011 certificate in the spring. Students who read all 22 books will become an official member of the 2011 Abe’s Double Deuces elite group.

Students should report to Mrs. Clifford or Ms. Deusinger to discuss the book.

SCHS Involved in Statewide Reading Program

The SCHS library is participating in the Read for a Lifetime program this year.

Read for a Lifetime is a program sponsored by Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian, Jesse White along with the Illinois State Library. It was the first statewide reading program to target high school students.

The primary goal of the program is to promote the enjoyment of reading, by encouraging students to read both classic and contemporary literature, and rewarding them for their effort. Hopefully, by participating in Read for Lifetime, students will develop a love of books and reading that will last a lifetime.

Illinois high schools participating in the program receive a list of 25 book titles.

The list represents a mixture of classic and contemporary literature. Each student who reads at least four titles from the list during the school year receives a certificate of achievement signed by Secretary of State Jesse White.

At this time, one student at SCHS meets the requirements for a certificate from Jesse White. Congra tu la t ions , David Walker ! He read Monstrumologyst, Graceling, Swim the Fly, and Lightning Thief: Percy Jackson & the Olympians, which are on the 2010-2010 Read for a Lifetime list.

During the first 12 years of the program 14,269 students from more than 500 high schools and public libraries throughout Illinois have read 62,200 books. In all, 278 high school seniors have received special recognition for having completed the program requirements during all four years of high school. Thirty students have read all 25 books and to date, one student completed the program all four years and read all 25 books each year.
