Communication issues might arise from a physicalcondition such as hearing difficulties or visualimpairment, or as a result of a condition affecting thebrain, such as stroke. These communication problemsmay come on gradually, or could happen overnight, leaving you unprepared and unsure how best tocommunicate with the person.

We should also bear in mind that someone who has aphysical or mental illness or disability may be affected byour own and other people s reactions to their condition. This could have an impact on their ability tocommunicate

o Sometimes you may find it difficult to communicate because you

are uncomfortable discussing a subject, for example if you havebottled-up emotions and are stressed. You may not feel likecommunicating because you're physically unwell yourself

    T IMING

I n many ways, timing is everything incommunication. F or example, if you have a great ideayou want to pitch to the boss, you may get a terribleresponse one day, but if you chose another day, youmight get a great response. C learly, people are moreresponding at some times compared to other times.C onsider the other person -- state of mind, emotions, time schedule to assess whether it's a good time totalk about a particular subject. D o this beforehand.D uring conversations, if you get unexpected negativereactions, think about whether it's that the otherperson is simply not ready to hear what you have tosay. M aybe it's best to continue at another time.

T iming is particularly important with emotional or tough

conversations. It's always good to ask -- "I'd like to talk to youabout [topic]. Is it a good time now?"

It acts as a tool to make our thoughts and ideas expressed ina very impactful manner. The purpose of communication is to get an idea out of one shead into the listeners head. Clarity is vital, because withoutclarity, the idea changes.

Perception checking refers to a process also known as"echoing," where one person repeats back what theyunderstand the other to have meant.

    Examples --

    Unskillful:Person says, "I don't like Chinese."Partner says, " You don't like my cooking."

    Skillful:

"I don't like Chinese.""I hear that you don't like Chinese . Is it Chinese in general, oris it the way I prepared it tonight?""No, you did fine, I just don't like it much."

In the second example, the listener checked his/herperception to insure that there was no misunderstanding, andallowed the partner to clarify the statement before coming toany conclusion. This sort of practice not only insures that weunderstand what is said, but also insures that we don't jump

the gun and get upset about assumptions that may not betrue.
