Recently, I was giſted a collecon of poems by Mary Oliver entled, House of Light. Included in this collecon is a popular piece by Oliver that I have become very familiar with over the years The Summer Day. In this piece, Oliver describes living a life of fullness and gratude, filled with quesons and a curiosity that is covered in a protecon of thoughulness and meaning. Oliver writes in such a way that brings the reader in and allows for the reader to sit and to think. I have always appreciated – at least what I have interrupted as - the devoonal nature of Olivers wring, and The Summer Day is of no excepon. As I prepare for Sunday worship and our scripture reading and message this day, I am reminded of this poem as we each take a collecve look at what, and how, we cover ourselves in a layer of protecon, thoughulness, and meaning and truly ask the queson, “…what is your plan to do with your one wild and precious life?I look forward to worshipping with you this day, Rev. The Summer Day – Mary Oliver Who made the world? Who made the swan, and the black bear? Who made the grasshopper? This grasshopper, I mean-- the one who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is eang sugar out of my hand, who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down -- who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes. Now she liſts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face. Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away. I don't know exactly what a prayer is. I do know how to pay aenon, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel in the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields which is what I have been doing all day. Tell me, what else should I have done? Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do With your one wild and precious life?

Recently, I was gifted a collection of poems by Mary Oliver entitled, House of Light. Included in this collection is a popular piece by Oliver that I have become very familiar with over the years – The Summer Day. In this piece, Oliver describes living a life of fullness and gratitude, filled with questions and a curiosity that is covered in a protection of thoughtfulness and meaning. Oliver writes in such a way that brings the reader in and allows for the reader to sit and to think. I have always appreciated – at least what I have interrupted as - the devotional nature of Oliver’s writing, and The Summer Day is of no exception.

As I prepare for Sunday worship and our scripture reading and message this day, I am reminded of this poem as we each take a collective look at what, and how, we cover ourselves in a layer of protection, thoughtfulness, and meaning and truly ask the question, “…what is your plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

I look forward to worshipping with you this day, Rev. Kelly Brooks

The Summer Day – Mary Oliver Who made the world? Who made the swan, and the black bear? Who made the grasshopper?
