Project Introduction Tell the story of human exploration of deep space. NASA is leading the next steps of human space exploration in the vicinity of the Moon and on toward Mars. When astronauts venture to Mars, what will they see? How will they feel? What will they experience? What will they do? Project Mars invites college students and early career professionals to learn about NASA’s deep space endeavors, including the Orion spacecraft, Space Launch System rocket and deep space gateway concept, and create their visualization of what this expedition may look like.

    Project

Recruit brave astronauts for a daring mission, promote space tourism for the adventurous, or depict the next genera-tion of space systems that will transport new world explorers to Mars. The sky is not the limit when you design a poster for the deep space journey, so reach out to infinity and beyond for creative ideas. In collaboration with NASA, the SciArt Exchange Project Mars Competition offers a chance to tell the story of human exploration of deep space.

NASA’s exploration missions will help build a flexible, reusable and sustainable infrastructure that will last multiple decades and support missions of increasing complexity to enable missions to Mars. Orion is NASA’s new spacecraft that will take astronauts to the Moon and beyond to make new discoveries about our solar system and unlock the mysteries of our own planet Earth. Orion will launch from a modernized Kennedy Space Center in Florida on NASA’s new heavy-lift rocket, the Space Launch System, the most powerful rocket in the world, capable of launching and carry-ing habitation, propulsion and logistics modules for a proposed deep space gateway, as well as landers, rov-ers and other surface systems that will be needed for a Martian voyage.

Final Format Posters for the SciArc competition will be submitted as .pdf files to be optimized for screen viewing. Winning entries will need to be provided as full resolution printable files. Standard on sheet size of 27” x 41”

Our proportional format for class: 19 3/4" x 30". Flush mount on gatorboard or foam board.

    Day 1 [W 7 /TH 8 March]

Assign Research Research Methodology On sheets of letter size paper, present

    1. a short description that represents your research and perspectives on space discovery and exploration, as well as a view on the history and future of space tourism.

    2. 2 -3 concepts for the poster with supporting text phrases, captions or headlines for the poster.

    3. print at least 10 images from the NASA sources and from other online and book sources to use as a reference point for imagemaking. Bring supplies to work on symbol and textural studies. Center images on letter size paper.

    Day 2 [M 19 + T 20]

Bring all letter sized research to class. If color images are from books, mark and organize. Present research.

    Symbol/Icon Development (9 on a 4 x 4" format)

Choose 3 objects, images or forms from your research that might be used to reference or represent your concept for the poster. In class, begin to recreate/redraw/restylize/translate these images through a series of stylization, image-based, texture or pattern studies.

Develop a vocabulary of form/image/symbol making using black pen, ink, paint, conte, pastel, pencil, cut or torn paper, transfer, and other digital techniques. Use the list provided to help generate a variety of methods for imagemaking. Conduct and center all the studies on a 4 x 4” format on white paper. An image translation may range from a highly realistic interpretation to a totally abstracted form. There are many points in between. Explore these boundaries in a minimum of 9 variations (3 each of the 3 selected objects/images).

    Typography Studies ( 10 on an 6 x 8" format)

Select your caption, headline or phrase from your research/conceptto be used as your typographic messaging for the poster. Conduct at least 10 different typographic studies in B+W. Consider the type studies from project 1. Use the typography experimentation list provided to help generate a variety type studies. Consider the attitude, style and concepts as it relates to choice and typographic expression.

    Media Studies ( 10 on a 4 x 4" format)

Select your media. Conduct at least 10 variations of the media. Push the boundaries of the media in the exploration and experimentation phase. Make rich surfaces in each study. Mixing other medias with the original is allowed, but focus primarily on the original.

    Project Goals

To continue to look at form, composition, color and media on a larger format.

To explore methods of image making, and form abstraction where the idea is clearly communicated

To develop concepts related to deep space and then translate these ideas using unique, expressive forms and compositions.

    Day 3 [W 21 + TH 22]

Critique 9 Stylizations, 10 Word Studies, 10 media

    Assign Poster

Posters function to entice or invite an audience from a distance as well as provide other richer levels of meaning when viewed up close. Using the selected concept, create a poster that compositionally tells a story of human exploration of deep space using the imagery, typography and media explorations. The poster is comprised of appropriate images and forms determined through research (may be photographic and translated), as well as interpretations of the space, through abstracted shapes. More advanced research into the space and space tourism will allow for stronger and more meaningful poster concepts. Use the tools of contrast, flow, depth and color to reinforce the message of the poster.

    Day 4 [M 26 + T 27] Critique refined stylizations - word - media Present four 6 x 9” poster composition sketches

PhotographicUse of actual photograph which is interesting in composition, value, texture, form etc. Consider ways of manipulating the image through cropping, xeroxing, screening, layering, etc.

SilhouetteHigh-contrast shape that describes the exterior form. Re-evaluate the shape and make certain the form is under-standable and interesting.LineDefine the image through various thick and thin line stylization techniques.

High ContrastDefine the image through black and white forms only. removing the gray values of a photographic image.

Equivocal SpaceInterior/exterior studies where the white spaces inside the black shape become a shape or design.

GesturalSpontaneous stylization (or appearing to be so). May use paint or line in expressive fashion. (torn, cut, colored etc).

RhythmsRepetition of forms or parts of forms that can be over-lapped, enlarged, reduced, reconstructed, shifted.

IconicReduce the image to its basic components. Evaluate the image and determine its essential definition. Reinforce its standard identification. Create a clean form, with good gestalt and clear formal qualities.

ExaggerationExtreme Emphasis on the idea or image

Historical ReferenceStylization influence through study of Cubism, Surrealism,Dadism, Vintage, Constructivism, Victorian, Rococo, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Expressionism, Pop, New Wave, etc., as well as Hollywood, T.V. Culture and American West History

    T Y P O G R A P H Y E X P E R I M E N T S Consider all previous type experiments to include:• Face, case, size, slant, weight, width, distortion, outline,

texture, tonality,• Balance, direction, ground, grouping, proximity, repetition,

rhythm, rotationExpressive Type/Semantics• The arrangement and selection of type reinforces the

meaning of words.• Experiment with the visible language. Expressive, dynamic.

The shape of the words and the organization of the type becomes an important aspect of the composition and the sense of legibility.

Collage + Typography• Refers to the posted paper compositions by the cubists.• Spontaneous type. Expressive, irregular, layered. • Visual elements or objects that exist independently of one

another are brought together to create a new composition with a new meaning. Elements are selected, cut, torn, etc. And reassembled.

Abstracted type• Flat type that has been altered but is still non-representational

Historical/Borrowed Style• May refer to or mimic typographic styles from the time

period or culture being represented. Care with stereotypes.

Vernacular type• Influence by non-designed designs. Naive or kitsch forms

of design used by sophisticated and educated designers in humorous fashion.

Hand-Lettering Type/Words• Calligraphy, graffiti, hand-drawn letters• A move away from the precision of printing type or computer

    generated type.

Planar type• Releases type from 2-d space. Implied dimension.

    Affected by perspective.

Type and Image integration• Type and image are treated equally.• Composition works to form and integrated whole.• Type and image affect each other.

    M E D I A E X P E R I M E N T S

Paint experimental• Choose colors as desired.• Present 4” x 4” abstract compositions demonstrating extremely

experimental painting techniques on various surfaces

Color Markers, Pencils, Pastels• Choose colors as desired• Present 4” x 4” abstract compositions demonstrating color

    marker techniques on various surfaces

Airbrush, Spray paint • Choose colors as desired• Present 4” x 4” abstract compositions demonstrating color

    techniques on various surfaces

Printing• Using various objects to transfer media onto various surfaces• Choosing colors and surfaces as desired, present 4” x 4”

    abstract compositions

Image/Texture Transfer• Show assortment of transfer techniques from one paper

source to another • Experimenting with xerox transfer, marker bleeding,

paint transfer, colortag transfer, texture transfer• Present 4” x 4” abstract compositions on various surfaces

Copy Techniques• Using the copier (b&w or color) to experiment with textures

over textures using transparencies + various paper stocks• Present 4” x 4” abstract compositions showing the various

possibilities of technical manipulation and visual texture

Textured Papers• Show an assortment of textured papers (gloss, matt,

textured, tactile etc.)• The colors of the papers should remain neutral.• Create 4” x 4” abstract compositions demonstrating

use of papers. • Can create texture by hand embossing and debossing of surfaces.

Handmade 2-D Textures• Show assortment of textures created by hand on various surfaces.

(rubbings, xeroxes of found materials, transfer, printing etc.) • Present textures on 4” x 4” formats
