Women Astronauts in Space

The first picture shows Ellen Ochoa who was the first Hispanic female selected to join NASA in 1990. Second, Mae Jemison was the first African American woman to train and work for NASA on September 2, 1992. Finally, Christa McAulliffe was the first civilian and teacher to go to space.

2Each of the women astronauts traveled to space in a space shuttle. A space shuttle is designed to take people and cargo between Earth and space.

3Astronauts eat three meals a day-breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as snacks. They can choose from foods such as chicken, seafood, beef, fruits, and nuts. Drinks range from coffee, tea, orange juice, lemonade, and water.

4Spacesuits provide oxygen, temperature control and protection from radiation while the astronauts are in space. The women astronauts must wear a spacesuit when they step outside of the spacecraft. However, when the astronauts are working aboard the space station, they can wear U.S. or Russian clothing.

5Astronaut training begins at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Astronauts practice all of the jobs they will need to know during their space mission. They learn to drive the Space Shuttle and are trained to conduct science experiments or spacewalks.

6When astronauts are asleep, they are zipped into sleeping bags that are attached to the walls of their spacecraft. This keeps them from floating around in their sleep. After a hard days work, the astronauts return to their sleeping quarters to rest and relax.
