Dear Parents and Caregivers,
It is always a pleasure to welcome past students back to
the school. This week I had a visit from Daniel Rotenstein
(class of 2016) who is in the RAAF (Royal Australian Air
Force). Officer Cadet Rotenstein is based at ADFA
(Australian Defence Force Academy), which provides
military training for the future leaders of the Defence
Force in Canberra. As well as taking on his Military train-
ing, Daniel is also studying a Bachelor of Business at the
UNSW Canberra, which is part of ADFA.
This is a huge achievement for Daniel, as there were
over 400 applicants, with a very rigorous application
process and selection criteria. Daniel was 1 of only 20
applicants offered a place at ADFA for the 2017 intake.
We wish him all the best for the future.
This week has seen some amazing results for our Theatre
Sports and Debating teams. On Monday night the Inter-
mediate Theatre Sports team competed at Scots. They
were so funny, clever, creative and most importantly a
cohesive team. They were generous and supportive of
each other. They won the competition by about 5 points
and were the only team to score a triple 5. The Senior
team compete on Friday at Cranbrook.
The Eastside debating competition qualifying rounds
came to an end last Friday with our Years 7, 10, and 11
teams winning their debates against Scots College. The-
se three teams have also made it through to semi-finals.
Congratulations to these teams on the hard work getting
to this stage of the competition and to our Year 8 and
Year 9 teams who have also delivered fantastic perfor-
mances throughout the competition.
Yonatan Freund continues his march towards national
selection for the World Championship for Karate. On
Saturday he won a silver medal in the NSW Open. It was
an impressive result for him having fractured his toe
warming up, which limited his movements throughout
the event.
The Year 11 Art students had a spectacular weekend at
Bundanon. They were involved in a sophisticated pro-
gram of artmaking, exploration and discovery. Our stu-
dents learned about artist Arthur Boyd and his varied
interactions within the art world. They completed many
works looking specifically at design, collage and print-
making. They completed drawings in the bush whilst be-
ing inspired by the sounds of birds and the fresh country
air. The Year 11s manipulated their drawings into relief
prints, etchings and handmade artists‘ books. All these
works will be on display at the HSC Art Showcase. Con-
gratulations Year 11 on all your commitment, hard work
and ability to challenge yourselves to see more in the
artmaking process. (See page 6 for photos).
We would like to congratulate two of our outstanding
senior artists. Finn Holle and Jacob Davidson have been
accepted into the prestigious HSC Intensive Studio Prac-
tice Course at the National Art School.
Only 175 applications were chosen across Australia. Both
students had to submit a portfolio of works as well as an
artistic statement and had to be achieving at a level of
excellence in their Preliminary Visual Arts Course.
This is an outstanding achievement for both these stu-
dents. We are incredibly proud of them and look for-
ward to following their journey as they work within a
broad range of media and art making processes and
refine their ability to interpret and evaluate their own
work.

Congratulations to Yoni Herz who has been filming the
show Little Big Shots Australia for Channel 7. The inter-
view and a performance will be screened on Channel 7
soon. A TV presenter in the making.
The U15 rugby side continues to impress with a win (29 –
19) against Riverview.
Congratulations to our 18s Girls Basketball Team who took
out the Championships at Sydney Comets last Friday
night. Coached by 2012 ex pupil Hayley Collins.
Next week we conclude the Parent-Teacher-Student eve-
nings, with the Year 9 meeting on Tuesday from 4:00pm –
8:00pm in Adelaide Hall. These meeting have been so
productive and well received by all participants.
Have a great week ahead.

CHESS
Last Friday, Reddam House's First Secondary Junior Chess
Team lined up for Round 2 of the NSWJCL Eastern Con-
ference inter-school chess competition. Our opponents
were Randwick Boys; their team made up predominately
of year 8 students. In contrast, we fielded a team made
up entirely of year 7 students. We had lost the week be-
fore in a clean sweep; 4-0. This time, hosting our oppo-
nents at home, the Reddam House team was deter-
mined to do better.
As the week before, the competition was tough and we
suffered an early blow with our first chaired play-
er, Jonathan Herz losing to a very experienced and stra-
tegic opponent. Striking back, Rachel Philips secured a
decisive win, leveling the score at 1-1. Our captain, Rhys
Leong embattled and drained succumbed to his skilled
opponent as the light died around us to set the score at
1-2. It was in these dying moments that Victor Xu; our
fourth chaired player and the most inexperienced of the
team, secured a hard fought draw with only 6 pieces left
on the board. In the end the score was 1.5 - 2.5.
Again, our players, all four of them, were the pinnacle of
sports-personship; gracious in defeat and humble in vic-
tory. This above all else is what made me proud to see
them play. That being said, the improvement of each
player was undeniable and as we move forward into
round 3, the students aim to improve and strive for suc-
cess. We wish them luck.
Dominic Smith
Chess Coordinator.
DEBATING
Reddam‘s Debating club is thrilled to announce that
they have made it through to the semi-finals of the
Eastside Debating Competition! Our teams for Year 7,
Year 10, and Year 11 have advanced to the next
round on the 26th of May at Cranbrook School, where
the topic will be Current Affairs. Year 7 are currently in
2nd place in the competition, Year 10 are currently in
1st place, and Year 11 in 3rd place overall.
Year 7 will be debating against SCEGGS, Year 10
against Scotts, and Year 11 against Sydney Boys High
School. We would love to see parents and students at
Cranbrook on the 26th of May cheering our teams on.
We wish the best of luck to all of our champs!

RADIO ANNOUNCING COMPETITION
On Mother's Day, a group of Reddam House students
made their way to the radio studios of Fine Music 102.5
where they competed in the Sydney Eisteddfod Radio
Announcing Competition.
Students were given a script and after five minutes re-
hearsal recorded it in the studio. The adjudicator sat in
another room, merely listening to the entrants' voices. At
the end of the section, she gave some excellent feed-
back and for anyone considering a career in perform-
ing arts, it was invaluable.
This was a wonderful opportunity for students to experi-
ence presenting the news in a working radio station,
and congratulations go to all those students who en-
tered this competition. (A special thanks to all the mums
who accompanied their children!)

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki
―When NASA classified Karl as non-astronaut material in
1981 he walked straight into ABC Radio station Double J
and offered to talk about the Space Shuttle launch.
They said ‗Okay‘ and his radio career took off from
there. ‗Great Moments In Science‘ ran on Double J
while Karl moonlighted as a medical student.
Since then, his media career has exploded from radio,
to TV, books, newspapers, magazines, scripting, profes-
sional speaking, and of course, the Net.
Karl made his TV debut in 1985 as the presenter of the
first series of Quantum. Since 1986 he has reported on
science on the Midday Show, Good Morning Australia
(including a full-time stint in 1991-2 as the TV Weather-
man and science reporter), the Today Show and Sun-
rise. Along side his fellow geek Adam Spencer, he has
written and co-produced two series of Sleek Geeks for
ABC TV.
Karl popularizes science on ABC radio stations across
Australia and, on the BBC, for several hours each week.
Many of you will be familiar with the original talk back
programme each Thursday on JJJ from 11am to mid-
day.
Karl has written (so far) 40 books, beginning with ‗Great
Moments In Science‘ in 1984, including such titles as ‗It
Ain‘t Necessarily So…‘Bro‘ (2006), which was launched,
quite literally, via rocket at Sydney‘s Bondi Beach (a
world first).
November 2009 saw the simultaneous release of Karl‘s
28th book, ‗Never Mind The BULLocks…Here‘s the Sci-
ence‘, board game (‗Fact OR Fishy‘), and first ever mu-
sic single, ‗Get Fact‘. In August 2010 Karl‘s 29th book,
‗Dinosaurs Aren‘t Dead‘, was released. In November
2010, Karl‘s 30th book, ‗Curious & Curiouser‘, was re-
leased into the adult non-fiction market. His latest book,
‗Short Back and Science‘ was released in October
2015.
In 1996 Karl was invited by the United States Information
Agency to be a Distinguished Foreign Guest in their In-
ternational Visitor Program. Previous Alumni of this pro-
gram include Julius Nyere, Anwar Sadat, Indira Gandhi
and Margaret Thatcher. As part of this program he visit-
ed NORAD, Dryden Air Force Base and the Jet Propul-
sion Laboratory – and got to sit in the front seat of an SR
-71 Blackbird.
In August 2000 Karl was one of first eight Australian Ap-
ple Masters to be announced (there are fewer than 100
in the entire world). The Apple Masters Program cele-
brates the achievements of people who are changing
the world through their passion and vision, while inspir-
ing new approaches to creative thinking.
In 2002, Dr Karl was honoured with the prestigious Ig No-
bel Prize awarded by Harvard University in the USA for
his ground-breaking research into Belly Button Lint and
why it is almost always blue.
In September 2003, Dr Karl was bestowed with the great
honour of being named ‗Australian Father of the Year‘.
Dr Karl Kruszelnicki received the Member of the Order of
Australia Award in the 2006 Australia Day Honours list. In
2007 the Australia Skeptics Society awarded Dr Karl the
Australia Skeptic Of The Year Prize.
In 2012 Karl was delighted to have Asteroid 18412
named after him. Asteroid Dr Karl/18412 was discovered
by Robert H. McNaught at the Siding Spring Observato-
ry in Coonabarabran, New South Wales, Australia, on
June 13, 1993.
Karl has degrees in Physics and Maths, Biomedical Engi-
neering, Medicine and Surgery and has worked as a
physicist, tutor, film-maker, car mechanic, labourer, and
as a medical doctor at the Kids‘ Hospital in Sydney.
Dr Karl is currently the Julius Sumner Miller Fellow at Syd-
ney University, where his ‗mission‘ is to spread the good
word about science and its benefits.
His enthusiasm for science is totally infectious and no
one is better able to convey the excitement and won-
der of it all than Dr Karl Kruszelnicki.‖ Source http://

DANCE NEWS
On Friday 12th May, our Senior Dance students (Yr 10-
12) travelled to the Roslyn Packer Theatre at Walsh Bay
to watch the latest Sydney Dance Company program,
'Orb'. This is a highly unique production featuring new
works choreographed by Rafael Bonachela (Company
Artistic Director) and Taiwanese choreographer, Cheng
Tsung-Lung.
Apart from being inspired by these beautiful, abstract
pieces of Dance performed by highly skilled, athletic
and articulate dancers, students were also given an
insight into how the works were made, including the
costumes and set, via a question/answer session with
Rafael Bonachela himself along with his Company
dancers. The audience were able to ask questions
about the conception and rehearsal process, which
was highly informative.
HSC DANCE 'SUE HEALEY' WORKSHOP
On Tuesday 9th May our HSC Dance students had the
amazing opportunity to work with the talented Sue Hea-
ley at our Dance Studio at the Woollahra Campus. Sue is
a highly sought after Australian choreographer and film
maker who created 'Fine Line', one of the Works HSC
Dance students must study for the Appreciation compo-
nent of the course.
The students engaged in a 3 hour workshop, learning
about Sue Healey's choreographic process by experienc-
ing it themselves, while also having the chance to discuss
her background, influences and the context of her work.
This was an invaluable experience for our students and is
sure to inform their own choreographic process as they
complete their own compositions as well as give them
great insight into 'Fine Line', allowing for deeper analysis
as they prepare for the theory examinations.
As always, our HSC Dance class approached the work-
shop with great focus and Sue even commented on
what fantastic young artists they are. Well done, Girls!

REDDAM HOUSE FOOTBALL
Another great morning of football at Centennial Park. I
caught up with the combined Year 8/9 team and what
a dramatic improvement there has been in this team
from last year. Coach Seamus has worked a minor mira-
cle with this bunch of boys. Whilst they were soundly
beaten by a very good side from the Kings School, our
boys were far from disgraced and better days are
ahead if they can maintain this rate of improvement.
The next game was the combined Year 9/10 side and
coach Spencer has these boys playing a very attractive
brand of football. Newington looked like they were go-
ing to be more than a match for this side but once
Young Harry steered in a nice volley early in the first half,
it was one way traffic. I particularly like the way every
boy in this team is encouraged to get their foot on the
ball and play the easy pass. Emile and Koshin were
wonderful playing out of defence and were ably sup-
ported by Sasha and Luke, who possesses a very sweet
left foot. I really enjoy watching this team play and look
forward to more of the same.
Open Boys v Cranbrook won 5-1
The first half of this game was a joy to watch. Our lefties,
Pirippi, Luke A and Captain Claude tore the opposition
to shreds with wonderful interplay and finesse. How the
score was only 1-0 at half time was a miracle as we
constantly created excellent chances. It was fitting that
Luc B-M got our goal as he was in everything that was
good during this period. He almost finished off the best
move of the game with a booming shot from outside
the box that bent the cross bar.
The goals flowed in the second half with Claude getting
his usual double, Toby landing a bomb from range and
Liam getting a tap in. But more importantly we kept the
ball moving with unselfish play.
The most memorable aspect of this game was that
Brendan Jiang from Year 12 made his debut in goals for
us. Brendan learnt his football with Chinese powerhouse
Guangzhou Evergrade. Hopefully he will be the first of
many of our international students to join Reddam
House Football as we try to assist their integration to our
wonderful school through football.
