MUSEUMS AND EXHIBITION CENTERS

The Cathedral Museum - Florence (Italy)

The largest permanent exposition of sculptures, dating back to the Tuscan Middle Ages and Renaissance, is situated close to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Virgin of the Flower). Millions of tourists have already enjoyed the artworks of Donatello, Michelangelo, and other masterpieces of world sculpture. The newly‑renovated Cathedral Museum in Florence was inaugurated on 29th October 2015.

A group of distinguished architects led the massive renovation project, doubling the museum’s space to around 6000 sqm. To provide voice evacuation and sound diffusion across the entire area is an RCF system, managed by a DXT 9000 evacuation system.

The COO of the Museum’s communication technology, Mr. Daniele Baccellini from GM Engineering studio, was more than satisfied with the system: “The DXT 9000 is compliant with the EN 54 standard, works very well and allows pre‑recorded evacuation announcements to be integrated with live vocal messages that are broadcast to the public in specific situations.”

The system designer, professor eng. Giancarlo Martarelli, wanted a solution to broadcast messages in both Italian and English as part of the fire alarm system. The package includes an MX 9504 amplified master unit, a UP 9504 four‑channel amplifier and a BM 9804 multi‑zone paging microphone. The evacuation system is completed with around 60 PL 70EN ceiling speakers, that blend into the Museum’s interiors in a subtle and discreet manner. As Mr. Baccellini explained: “This is an extraordinary exposition, and so aestethics are also really important. We chose the ceiling speakers not just because of their functional features, but also because of their look.”

Parliament of Equatorial Guinea

An RCF Forum 9000 digital conference system was chosen by The Makinen Venture Corporation for the Equatorial Guinea Parliament, located in the capital city of Malabo.

The system is composed of 250 FMS 9411‑S microphone sets, semi‑flush mounted on the desks of the Parliament. The consoles are enabled for voting operations, with the possibility to assign a different level of audio to every seat, and to enable simultaneous translation. Four FDC 9900 dome cameras with high‑speed movement allow camera follow to the microphone in use, displaying video images onto two large plasma displays routed via an FVM9844 audio/video‑switching matrix. RCF Acustica C3110 loudspeakers have been installed as the main audio system for the room, delivering a uniform and highly defined audio coverage.

The project and the system start up, which was configured on site, was undertaken by the RCF Forum team, who quickly adapted the system following the request of the customer during the installation process. This was facilitated by the versatility of the Forum 9000 system, allowing on‑site customization through its PC software.

J Medical – Turin (Italy)

The J Medical health center was born from an idea by the Juventus soccer team and Santa Clara Group. The J Medical is a highly advanced structure of more than 3500 square meters providing high‑quality health services not only to the Juventus team, but to the general public.

The venue includes 19 doctors’ offices, two gyms, pools and areas equipped for physical therapy and rehabilitation. From RCF’s broad product portfolio the DXT 9000 Series was chosen. This is a distributed system where each component, including the speakers, has its own address and can be monitored according to EN 54 standards. The multizone system at the J Medical center is managed by the MX 9504 master unit, linked to the UP 9504 amplifier. This configuration allows expansion of the system in order to create eight zones of 125 W each.

The system includes three BM 9804 multi‑zone paging microphones, one for each reception desk, equipped with BE 9808 additional selective call paging microphones. PL 68 (ceiling speaker fire domes) and DU 60 EN (wall/ceiling universal steel speakers) are installed in all areas of the health center.

FICO, the brand new Fabbrica Italiana Contadina (Italian Farming Factory), is the largest agri‑food park in the world. It features 9000 square meters of shopping space, training courses, restaurants and many events about food. Every detail of the audio system design in the park has been catered for by RCF. Beyond taste, smell and sight, even hearing contributes to the guest’s experience, to accompany the visit and enhance its memory.

RCF supplied the sound system for the entire structure in accordance with the EN54 standard. Deploying a complex DXT 9000 system, which allows both background music and evacuation announcements, the control and distribution is centralized and easy to manage. The system consists of four amplification units connected to the network via fiber optic through the Dante protocol. The Voice Alert Audio System services the entire gallery and common areas.

Background music is also guaranteed throughout the external perimeter where it is possible to see crops growing and breeding. The executive definition of the project began in 2016 and ended a few months before the inauguration in November 2017, with the certification of the plant by the relevant bodies.

Akropol Theater – Athens (Greece)

The Acropolis Theater is one of the historic theaters in the centre of Athens. The history of the Theater began in 1934, transforming the old cistern of Ippokratous Street into a theater, where it hosted Italian vaudeville shows and itinerant theater. In 1941, with the arrival of the Germans, it was converted into a summer theater.

The Acropolis Theater, recently renovated, preserves the spirit of old Athens, offering all modern comforts, including a complete RCF TTL‑6A Active three‑way line array module. Originally built in 1912 as a vaudeville theater, the venue served as a tour stop for everyone from the Three Stooges to Bob Hope. From there it evolved into a movie theater until even second‑run movies could no longer support keeping it open. In 2002, new management turned the venue into a rock club, but that went dark in 2011 until recently, when it underwent a total renewal.

The outside of the venue maintains the movie theater marquee motif. Once inside, it is a modern, cosmopolitan look. The main floor is dual tiered and the rear area includes a colorful backlit bar. The main floor is open, able to accommodate capacity crowds or with the ability to put in tables.and chairs dependent on the performance and audience. A balcony area is more like a lounge, with couches and plush chairs to enjoy the performance as if sitting in your living room.

Familiar with the quality and artist acceptance of RCF, Rochaus installed a line array system comprised of 16 HDL20‑A dual 10” two‑way active cabinets along with eight SUB9006‑AS dual 18” active subwoofers framed in under the stage. Two RCF HDL10‑A dual 8” active cabinets were mounted on the front lip of the stage for front fill with two additional cabinets installed for balcony fill. The Rochaus is designed as much for the artist as it is for the audience. Load in is easy, direct to the stage.

Alan Parsons Live Project – German Tour 2017

Alan Parsons and his band were back in Germany for 13 dates throughout the country in May, 2017. Playing a mixture of indoor and outdoor shows with his nine‑piece band, Alan Parsons Live Project was mixed by Emmy‑nominated FoH engineer Ross Pallone. The sound of the show has to be very high quality, as that is what the fans expect. Alan Parsons is, in fact, a living legend of audio production. His experience producing Pink Floyd and working with The Beatles marks him down as a real icon for sound professionals and enthusiasts.

To achieve maximum quality and perfect coverage in all the different venues, 24 modules of RCF HDL 50‑A were used as the main system, 12 per side, plus 18 RCF SUB 9007‑AS for the low‑frequency coverage, six TT052A as front‑ fills and four TTL 6‑A for the out‑fill coverage. “I am very pleased with the RCF PA. It’s very smooth with excellent coverage. The main PA is powerful and never harsh. The 21” SUB 9007‑AS is the best I have ever used. They are set up every day in a cardioid pattern that enables the subs to deliver the same volume from the front of the venue to the back. I could sit right in front of the subs and not be blown away.” The entire system was placed on a network to enable each loudspeaker to be controlled through the powerful RCF management software: RDNet, freely downloadable on the RCF website.

Pallone states: “I am looking forward to RCF producing a PA system that is readily available everywhere in the world. This company makes all their own components and has rigorous quality control. I had the opportunity to visit the RCF factory in Italy, and I was very impressed with the way they build their PA systems. If you are an engineer and you are offered the RCF PA for a gig, go for it. San Marco Church in Venice

At Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice, a true treasure of history, art and faith visited every year by at least 1.5‑2 million people from all over the world, an extensive RCF sound reinforcement system has been deployed, with 40 loudspeaker enclosures, including no fewer than ten VSA 2050 steerable vertical line arrays.

The ten VSA 2050 arrays cover the congregation zone of the Basilica and are mounted on the church’s impressive columns. This forms a main sound front, made up of six systems covering the front area of the naves and the transept, while the other four are mounted 20 metres further forward and appropriately delayed, to cover the rear portion of the naves. Two compact RCF MR 33WT enclosures, installed below the ambos, optimize coverage for the front rows of worshippers.

Thanks to the powerful DSP circuit, connected digitally to the 20 Class D 50W amplifiers, the VSA 2050 processes the audio signal fed to each of its 20 loudspeakers to control their vertical dispersion, driving them with the necessary power to ensure excellent dynamics and addressing the appropriate area to be covered.

Various other RCF enclosures were installed in the Basilica, both indoors and outside: 17 two‑way passive loudspeaker columns (models CS 6940 and 6520) are installed in the remaining seven zones of the huge church, including the entire area of the presbytery and the Pala d’Oro (the high altar’s splendid retable), the Baptistery, the chapel of St. Isidore and the narthex. Three MR33T “service” enclosures are positioned at the two organs (as monitors for the organists) and in the vestry. On particularly important occasions, six H6045 fibreglass multi‑cell long‑throw exponential horn speakers, each fitted with four D5076 drivers, are mounted outside the Basilica with special fast‑lock hardware, and cover the entire square.

Bridgestone Arena - Nashville (USA)

According to an ESPN Ultimate Standings fan survey: “The Bridgestone Arena topped the charts in stadium experience, and it seems like it will only continue to improve”. Durrell Sport, technical provider, has been involved with The Bridgestone Arena since the beginning, and when they heard RCF had released their large‑format HDL50‑A line array system, they were intrigued. “Most companies build line arrays for the live performance touring industry. With the size of the arena, we wanted tour quality sound in an installation friendly solution,” says Durrell principal John Horrell, adding that “the cost versus capability ratio of the RCF system made the choice even easier.”

Having had the chance to experience the RCF system himself, he felt confident in his selection. Durrell reached out to RCF for a real‑world system demonstration – put the system up for use by the arena for the duration of the playoffs. This system Durrell believed in and the Bridgestone executives had faith in, being a great exciting solution to “get us through the playoffs and greatly increase the fan experience.” Within six days of the final decision the old sound system was taken down and the new RCF system was put up. “Immediately I was extremely impressed; the RCF system gave us a much more dynamic sound with low frequency that had never been part of the previous fan experience. Fans were energized, motivated and Bridgestone became a very effective tool to aid the players and intimidate their opponents.” notes Horrell.

Skyway Monte Bianco is a marvel of Italian engineering technology that offers an unforgettable travel experience. Nestled in the heart of the Alps of Valle d’Aosta, the smallest region in Italy with a predominantly mountainous territory, the new Mont Blanc cable cars are not merely a means of transport, but are the most spectacular way of reaching the closest point to the summit of Mont Blanc and its majestic glaciers. Opened in June 2015, the Skyway Monte Bianco connects and provides easy access to the three stations of Courmayeur (1,300 m), departure point which houses the ticket office, parking facilities and a small café; Pavillon du Mont Fréty (2,200 m) and Punta Helbronner (3,466 m); Pavillon du Mont Fréty (2.200 m), the intermediate station which hosts the winery Cave Mont Blanc; two restaurants, a conference room which provide seating for 150 seats and a special shopping area; Punta Helbronner (3.466 m) where you can admire the mighty Mont Blanc in all of its splendor from the 360‑degree panoramic terrace, and a bistro where one can take refreshment and discover the permanent exhibition of crystals.

The Skyway at Mont Blanc is equipped with an RCF DXT 9000 digital evacuation system, certified in accordance with the EN54‑16 standard. The installation in Mont Blanc is made up of three independent systems, one for each station, and is divided into separate zones corresponding to fire detection areas. Three amplification units were chosen from the MX 9504 series, one for each level of the new SkyWay cable car. The pre‑recorded messages are in three languages instead of two, as usually occurs. French is spoken just as much as Italian and the SkyWay has a great influx of French and English speakers. The powerful digital amplifiers used are RCF UP 9502 and 9504 models. The supply unit PS 4048 ensures continued power to the DXT 9000 system in case of network interruptions. The sound source is an RCF MS1033, with integrated CD/USB player and a radio tuner. Microphones from the RCF BM 9800 series are also used. Three types of loudspeakers were chosen for their high‑quality sound performance, UV‑ and weather‑resistance: RCF DP1420 EN sound projector, DU 50EN and HD 21 EN horn speaker.
