An Invitation from the Scientific Programme Chairs

Gopal BadlaniScientific Programme Co-Chair

Margit FischScientific Programme Co-Chair

Dear colleagues,

While each SIU Congress offers attendees a unique experience, we are excited to present you with a new and innovative scientific programme for SIU 2017—truly making it a congress like no other!

Alongside our committee of experts—representing various geographical regions and subspecialties—we have designed a programme that is sure to be efficient in its delivery of the most relevant information to our attendees—information that will directly impact how you practice urology on a daily basis. To this end, SIU has joined forces with some of the most important subspecialty societies around the world, including the Endourology Society, the Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons, the International Continence Society, the International Society of Sexual Medicine, the Society of Urologic Oncology/European Society of Urologic Oncology, and the Society of Urologic Robotic Surgery.

Of course, SIU plenary sessions continue to feature high science from some of the most respected experts in our field and we are honoured to welcome named lecturers representing the major urological associations from around the world. In addition, SIU 2017 will feature tips and tricks and hands-on training courses designed to address some of the most in-demand skills in urology.

We are confident that SIU 2017 will offer attendees one-of-a-kind programming in an intimate atmosphere conducive to learning and making connections with colleagues. Don’t miss out—mark your calendars for October 19-22, 2017. We look forward to seeing you in Lisbon!

Sincerely,

JOIN US IN

LisbonDear Friends and Colleagues,

As your Local Organizing Chairs, we are pleased to welcome the world of urology to Lisbon for four exciting days during the SIU’s 37th Congress. This historic city, a primary player in the European Age of Discovery and Exploration, is the perfect backdrop for assembling a diverse faculty to deliver a unique and cutting-edge scientific programme, under the leadership of Drs. Gopal Badlani and Margit Fisch. We welcome our colleagues from all regions of the world and urological subspecialties and hope you will join us in making SIU 2017 a truly unforgettable experience.

We look forward to hosting you in beautiful Lisbon, Europe’s westernmost capital city. With fewer than 600,000 inhabitants, Lisbon is a perfect city for tourists—replete with attractions and culture, without feeling crowded. In addition, as a “global city”, Lisbon’s main airport welcomes flights from around the world, while those hailing from Europe have additional options should they prefer to travel by train.

Be sure to add SIU 2017 to your agenda and join us for one of the year’s most unique educational events in urology.

Sincerely,

Arnaldo FigueiredoChair, Local Organizing Committee

For the third consecutive year, and building on increased participation, SIU partners with global urology nurses to bring you its nursing symposium, organized by Kay Talbot, RN, Australia. On Saturday, October 21, urology nurses from diverse and complementary practice backgrounds will again come together to learn best practices and forge valuable networks of like-minded colleagues.

This year, nurses are invited to submit abstracts for presentation and publication (visit our website for details). Nurses enjoy special rates that allow them access to the complete scientific programme and social events.

If it’s history you’re looking for, Lisbon will not disappoint! One of the oldest cities in Europe, Lisbon is thought to have been founded around 1200 BCE, with some legends even claiming that the ancient city was settled by the legendary Odysseus.

However, Lisbon is not just a vision of the past—the beautiful and unique architecture and bustling port connecting it to all corners of the world make Lisbon a truly cosmopolitan city. In addition, Lisbon has a warm-temperate subtropical climate which means that its winters are very mild and summers are quite warm—making it an ideal tourist destination, year-round. Lisbon is also one of Europe’s more affordable destinations, and visitors pay comparatively less on accommodations and dining. As an added bonus—despite being ranked highly on most travel guides—Lisbon remains considerably less crowded than some more popular European destinations. Travel and Leisure magazine recently named Portugal its 2016 Destination of the Year; the World Travel Awards voted Lisbon top cruise destination for 2016, and thousands of visitors flock to Lisbon for its irresistible appeal (and affordable luxuries).

Why LISBON?

Getting THERE

While You Are in Town… 1. Take a tram ride! Lisbon’s iconic trams are a great way to get around while

doing a little sightseeing.2. Trek to the top of the highest of Lisbon’s seven hills and take in both

the city’s fascinating history as well as the breathtaking views of St. George’s Castle.

3. Go a little further afield and travel to Cascais, a charming seaside town with beautiful beaches that manages to be both quaint and luxurious at the same time.

4. Traditionally known as a haven for the city’s bohemian community of artists and writers, Bairro Alto is a vibrant neighbourhood, known for its colourful graffiti and vibrant nightlife. Enjoy a late-night meal or drink at one of the city’s most popular restaurants or bars.

5. Catch up on your history lessons at Museu Arqueológico do Carmo - The Carmo Archaeological Museum. Located alongside the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Convento do Carmo, the museum houses artefacts dating back to the Paleolithic period.

Lisbon airport offers direct flights to all major European cities and, as a hub for TAP Portugal and Star Alliance, connects Portugal to all regions of the world. The airport itself is conveniently located about 6 miles/9km from the city centre and is well connected by the metro, providing easy, traffic-free access to hotels. Taxis in Lisbon are also plentiful and inexpensive.

If you’re traveling within the continent, Lisbon is also accessible by train. There are four major train stations with popular routes from cities such as Madrid and Paris.
