The n
The Presentation of Our Lord (Year A)
2nd February, 2020
Reflection: The readings for this feast day, while acknowledging the reality of the human
condition, are full of promise, expectation, hope and joy. The prophet Malachi proclaims that “The Lord
whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple!” The Psalmist orders the ancient doors to open wide
for the King of Glory, whom the author of the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us is the One who shares our
humanity, our flesh, our blood and our suffering.
Then Luke tells of the presentation of Jesus in the Temple with simplicity, beauty and realism. Along with
many other pilgrims fulfilling the law, here are two more, carrying a child, walking up the great Temple
Mount steps and entering through the temple’s ancient doors. The Holy Spirit reveals to Simeon, the
obedient listener, and Anna, a favoured one of God, that this infant is the long awaited Light of the
Nations. They are overwhelmed with joy. Nevertheless, Simeon foresees this child is destined to suffer.
Pilgrims who today visit the Temple Mount excavations can walk up its great southern steps to what
were the Temple gates, knowing that Mary and Joseph most likely would have carried their infant Child,
the long-awaited Messiah, up these same steps. They are graced with the privilege of walking in the
footsteps of this Holy Family. They can experience the joy of Simeon and Anna, and with them, give praise
and thanks to God.

ELEMENTS OF THE MASS EXPLAINED: by John Briffa Liturgy Officer What is the purpose of the Entrance Hymn? The purpose of the Entrance Hymn is to draw together a group of individuals into a ‘community of the faithful’ by way of uniting people in one voice. When people sing together they become one in voice and have one focus. All liturgies begin with an Introductory Rite which contains three basic elements, Entrance, Greeting and Collect (Opening Prayer). The purpose of each element is to unify those gathered to become one in Spirit, in the name of Christ. Jesus said, “When two or more are gathered in my name, I am there with you” (Mt 18:20). The gathering as one reveals the presence of Christ in the assembly of the people. (GIRM46,47)

Prayer for those affected by Bushfire and
Drought
Eternal God,
In wisdom and love you created our earth to sustain us
and give us life.
We turn to you now in faith, hope and love, asking
you to look with favour on our fire-ravaged and
drought-stricken land, on our starving and displaced
animals, on our failing crops and burning farms, towns
and forests.
Strengthen, sustain and give new heart to our farmers
and to all who are affected by drought; be with those
who support them. Strengthen and comfort the victims
of the fires, those who have lost family, friends,
property and stock. Protect our volunteer firefighters
and all members of essential services.
In your loving providence, send abundant rain to
quench the fires and to restore our parched earth.
Father of all compassion, hear our prayer through
Jesus Christ your Son, in whom the promise of new
life has dawned, and through the power of the Holy
Spirit, the Lord the giver of life: Renew your faithful
people; Renew the face of the earth.

Introduction Yes, we can celebrate today our nothingness in the eyes of the world, because God has looked on our humility and lowliness and given us the wisdom, virtue and holiness of Christ. He alone
is our boast.
First Reading Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13
In your midst I will leave a humble and a lowly people.
Responsorial Psalm
Happy the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs!
Second Reading St Paul to the Corinthians 1:26-31
God has chosen what is weak by human reckoning.
ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA! Rejoice and be glad;
Your reward will be great in heaven.
ALLELUIA!
Gospel Matthew 5:1-12
Happy are the poor in spirit.
Prayers of the Faithful Presider: My sisters and brothers, in a
spirit of trust, we bring these petitions to God, offered through Jesus, God’s compassionate and trustworthy High Priest.
For the women and men who have consecrated their lives to God in the religious life (especially in our own parish) that in their dedication with will witness to prayer and charity. Lord, hear us. Lord, hear our prayer
For our families, that the young will grow to maturity, seniors will share their wisdom, and parents will guide with love and respect. Lord, hear us.
Lord, hear our prayer.
For all who struggle because of the long drought, especially in the dozens of towns where there is a critical shortage of water, that God will quench our parched land with drenching rains.
Let us pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer.
For all who have the coronavirus, those who care for them, those who manage health care across the nations and those carrying out research, that the present crisis may be quickly resolved. Lord, hear us. Lord, hear our prayer.
Priest….. Almighty God, as Jesus was presented to you by Joseph and Mary with thanksgiving, so may we offer ourselves to you through this celebration of the Eucharist in the same spirit of thanksgiving. Through Christ our Lord. Amen
