Reflection "Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance." John the Baptist does not mince words. He tells it like it is. When the hypocritical Phari- sees and Sadducees show up piously for baptism, John calls them out, saying, "You brood of vipers!" Not welcoming words, to say the least. Then he tells them that being part of the religious club (i.e., children of Abraham) isn't enough. No, "every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the ire." It can be easy to join John in pointing ingers at those self-righteous religious leaders. But we're usually not so quick to point ingers at our- selves. On this Second Sunday of Advent, as we seek to prepare for the coming of Christ, we also need to hear John's solemn warning. How are we like these Pharisees? How have we excused ourselves because we are part of the "club," because we are baptized Christians, regular churchgo- ers, better than others, or whatever justiication we use to declare our- selves in good shape? How have we failed to produce good fruit by being satisied with a comfortable life and a routine practice of the faith? What do we need to change? Where do we need to grow? How do we need to reach out and serve others, to sacriice sinful behaviors, to delve deeper into our love for the Lord? John preaches today that God will "gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable ire." Advent is a gift from the Church--a time to renew our spiritual life by getting rid of the chaff in our souls and producing instead a fruitful harvest. Now is the time to do this work. As John tells us, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"

DEVOTION TO MARY (A Rose for Mary Ministry}

Blessed Virgin Mary Please Pray This Week Especially for

In Memory of Rosalie Hubbs

Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who !led to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this con!idence, I !ly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

The Rose often symbolizes Mary, the Queen of Heaven. In rela-

tion to the Blessed Mother it displays perfect love, form, fra-

grance, and color. For Mary the thorns on the rose remind us

that Our Lord Jesus Christ wore a crown of thorns and gave up

his blood for all humanity, as His Mother, Mary witnessed this

suffering and death !irst hand at the foot of the cross.

The Altar Society

Thank you! To all of my Church Family who have held me in prayer during surgeries and illness, sent cards, food, and visits. A special thank you to Monsignor Michael, Altar Society, and Jay Peeples.

Thank you all for your generosity and love. It is greatly appreciated.

God Bless,

Lydia Villasenor and Family

Devotion to Our Blessed Mother Mary

The new 2017 signup sheets and envelopes are available in the narthex for the “Devotion to Our Blessed Mother Mary”

ministry. This special ministry (sponsored by the Altar Socie-ty) is a great way to honor your loved ones birthdays, anni-

versary or any special occasion. A rose bouquet will be placed on the altar by the statue of Mary with a special section in the bulletin recognizing the person being honored and prayed for

each week. The cost of the rose is $15.00.

Thanks to All

The family of Marvin Batenhorst extends our heartfelt thanks to all who comforted us with your kind

words, thoughtful deeds and prayers of support in our time of loss.

Mary & Family.
