REGIONAL US HOSPITAL GENERATES POWER AND SAVINGS WITH ON-SITE TRIGENERATION

Overlook Medical Center in Summit, NJ can now provide more affordable patient care while maintaining their stature as one of the best hospitals in the US.

Atlantic Health System is one of the largest non-profit health care systems in New Jersey, comprised of Morristown Medical Center, Overlook Medical Center in Summit and Newton Medical Center. The three medical centers – all accredited by The Joint Commission – have a combined total of 1,308 licensed beds and more than 2,750 affiliated physicians providing a wide array of health care services to the residents of Northern and Central New Jersey.

WHAT KEEPS HOSPITAL EXECUTIVES AWAKE AT NIGHT?

Financial challenges ranging from the uncertainty surrounding the Affordable Care Act to Medicare payments that average 10% less than the cost of care. In this challenging environment, where cost containment is required to survive, AHS needed to reduce their electricity costs.

SOLUTION:

After reviewing solar and turbine based generating equipment, the decision was made to partner with ENER-G Rudox Inc. to build a trigeneration system based on natural gas reciprocating engines. The vision was to use a natural gas generator set to produce electricity for the hospital, while using the free byproducts of the system (heat) to simultaneously produce steam, chilled water, and hot water – this is the hallmark of cogeneration and trigeneration. Starting with ENER-G Rudox’s industry leading 41.5% efficient Mitsubishi engine, and appropriately utilizing the waste heat, the total efficiency of the trigeneration plant was designed to exceed 80% and reduce Overlook Medical Center’s (OMC) utility costs by 35%.

“Saving 35% annually on our electricity costs directly impacts our mission to deliver high-quality, safe, affordable patient care,”

Robert Peake, Director, Construction and Facilities Management Atlantic Health System (AHS)

TRIGENERATION BENEFITS:

Savings of 30% or more off total energy bills

Energy reliability from multiple sources of electricity

Carbon footprint reductions of 20% or more

OVERLOOK MEDICAL CENTER:

After the detailed design was completed, two 1000 kilowatt generators (for a total of 2MW) were installed at OMC, and the hospital now generates 60% of their electricity on-site. In addition, OMC uses the heat produced by the engines in two ways:

1. Engine exhaust is used to generate steam for the hospital, which allows OMC to decrease the firing rate of their existing boilers.

2. Engine coolant removes high grade heat from the engine, and by flowing this through an absorption chiller produces chilled water for the hospital. This chilled water directly reduces the demand on the existing electric chillers and provides additional capacity for summer chilled water needs.

Using the heat off the engine to produce steam, chilled water, and hot water allowed OMC to reduce their utility bills by 35% or about $2M per year!

In addition to the economic benefit, the OMC trigeneration system also provides the hospital with energy reliability. During emergencies or extended utility outages, the trigeneration system is able to provide 110% of the hospital’s (not just life safety) electricity needs, meaning they can stay fully operational even during the worst disasters: “The ability to remain fully capable during disaster periods allows us to provide for our community when they need it the most.” noted Austin Murphy, Manager of Facilities, Construction, and Clinical Engineering.

Finally, the trigeneration system also helps the hospital to reduce their carbon footprint. AHS is continuously looking for ways to help the environment, and this system show how far they are willing to go to help. The system reduces emissions of carbon dioxide by more than ten thousand tons per year and will be doing so for the next 15+ years.

In the end, the trigeneration system from ENER-G Rudox allows Atlantic Health System to take advantage of lower natural gas prices to reduce their energy costs, add energy reliability and reduce their carbon footprint.

ABOUT COGENERATION AND TRIGENERATION: Cogeneration and Trigeneration are proven forms of clean energy, utilized in both the United States and international community. The technology generates primary electric power for a facility, captures the waste heat created as a natural byproduct of generation, and recycles it into usable thermal power. As a result, users realize significant benefits in the form of cost savings, power reliability, and carbon reduction. This technology can be utilized by any facility that has year round thermal loads (steam, hot water, chilled water etc.), and is most commonly used by industrial manufacturers, hospitals, and hotels.
