Th e Organising Committee of the SPANZA 2013 ASM invites you to Sydney, to take part in a challenging and compelling scientifi c program in the beautiful seaside resort of Manly. Th emed around the theatrical and dramatic aspects of our work, the conference will explore similarities between our daily work environment and that of a stage production. Reminding us that from the very earliest days of anaesthesia in the Boston Ether dome to the most innovative use of simulation training, the operating theatre is exactly that- a theatre!

Our two invited speakers, David Polaner from Denver, USA and Jenny Th omas from Cape Town, South Africa, will ensure that the scientifi c presentations include diverse perspectives. Both these speakers and a variety of internationally recognised presenters will challenge delegates to question the way we practice and how we see ourselves as paediatric anaesthetists. Programme sessions will explore the various roles played by the paediatric anaesthetist, peri-operative physician, pharmacologist, physiologist, proceduralist, trauma specialist, pain specialist and researcher.

Th is meeting provides a wonderful opportunity for you and your guests to explore the entertainment districts of the city and to take advantage of Sydney’s theatre and performing arts spring season. From the opera and ballet to live theatre, musicals and comedy clubs, a ferry ride across the harbour will get you there. Or if you prefer, relax and enjoy Sydney’s classic Manly beach, ocean views and iconic streetscapes. Take in an early morning harbour swim or try the surf. Th e conference hotel is nestled perfectly on a peninsula between the Pacifi c Ocean and Sydney harbour, surrounded by exceptional restaurants.

Th e social programme will have something for everybody and the conference dinner has been planned to make your visit to Sydney as memorable as any ‘grand opening night’.

Do register early (early bird by August 26) to ensure your place at this entertaining, thought-provoking and confronting conference.

David M. Polaner, MD, FAAP is Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the Children’s Hospital Colorado, where he is Director of Transplant Anesthesia and former Chief of the Acute Pain Service. David received his undergraduate education at Yeshiva University and his MD from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine,

both in New York. He trained in pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Seattle Children’s Hospital and in anesthesiology at University of Washington. Following a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology and critical care at Seattle Children’s, he was a research fellow in Warren Zapol’s laboratory at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He was appointed to the faculty of Harvard Medical School and subsequently became Director of Pediatric Critical Care at Tuft s University School of Medicine and the Floating Hospital for Children in Boston before moving to Denver in 2000.

David’s research and clinical interests are wide-ranging and include regional anesthetics in children, the pediatric airway, propofol infusion syndrome, anesthesia informatics, transplant anesthesia and high altitude medicine and physiology.

He is the co-founder of the Pediatric Regional Anesthesia Network (PRAN), co-director of the 7th International Symposium on the Pediatric Airway and is Section Editor for correspondence and case reports for the journal Pediatric Anesthesia.

Jenny Th omas is the Principal Specialist and Head of Paediatric Anaesthesia at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. Th e Red Cross Hospital is the only dedicated children’s hospital on the African continent and is affi liated with the University of Cape Town. It provides anaesthesia services for all the major surgical disciplines including cardiac

surgery, liver transplantation and conjoint twin separation.

Jenny has spent more than 20 years in the fi eld of paediatric anaesthesia, mostly at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. As Associate Professor in paediatric anaesthesia, Jenny is the fi rst female professor in the UCT Department of Anaesthesia. Jenny has a special interest in pain management and procedural sedation, burns anaesthesia and pain and cardiothoracic anaesthesia. Her department takes responsibility for a large and varied neonatal and general surgical caseload. Over her career, Jenny has gained un-paralleled experience in the management of conjoined twins and has written extensively about this. Teaching and training at all levels is also one of Jenny’s passions and this allows her department to take a leading role in professional development and workforce training for the whole of the African continent. Jenny maintains her research interests in paediatric pain management with collaborations with Professor Dick Tibboel and Dr Monique Van Dijk of the Sophia Children’s Hospital and the Erasmus University, Rotterdam.

She has recently been involved in setting up a paediatric trauma centre and has had signifi cant input into the design and planning of clinical infrastructure and operating theatres within her institution.
