Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation

and Resettlement Act, 2013

• The Right to Fair Compensation andTransparency in LandAcquisition, Rehabilitation andResettlement Act, 2013 is a legislation thatregulates land acquisition and provides laiddown rules for grantingcompensation, rehabilitation andresettlement to the affected persons inIndia.

• The act has provisions to provide faircompensation to those whose land is takenaway, brings transparency to the process ofacquisition of land to set up factories orbuildings, infrastructural projects andassures rehabilitation of those affected.

• The act will replace the Land AcquisitionAct, 1894, a nearly 120-year old law enactedduring British rule.

Aims and objectives• To ensure, in consultation with institutions of

local self-government and Gram Sabhas ahumane, participative, informed and transparentprocess for land acquisition forindustrialization, development of essentialinfrastructural facilities and urbanization withthe least disturbance to the owners of the landand other affected families.

• Provide just and fair compensation to theaffected families whose land has been acquiredor proposed to be acquired or are affected bysuch acquisition.

• Make adequate provisions for such affected

persons for their rehabilitation and

resettlement.

• Ensure that the cumulative outcome of

compulsory acquisition should be that

affected persons become partners in

development leading to an improvement in

their post acquisition social and economic

status and for matters connected therewith or

incidental thereto.
