FROMTHEPASTOR’SDESK

ST. JOHN VIANNEY was born of devout farming people on May 8, 1786, in the village of Dardilly, in the French diocese of Lyons. Due to his obligations on the farm, as well as the ravages of the French Revolution, John was able to obtain only a scant amount of formal schooling; but at the age of nineteen, he left home to begin his studies to become a priest. John became Father Vianney on August 13, 1815. Father Vianney received an appointment to be the pastor of the Parish of Ars and for forty-one years poured himself out, heroically bringing his people to the Faith. St. John Vianney spent as much as sixteen to eighteen hours a day in the confessional, only sleeping a few hours a night. From 1824 to 1858, he endured almost nightly attacks from the devil, who once revealed to him that if there were three such men as he alive at one time, the devil’s kingdom would be destroyed. Worn out by his labors, he died at the age of seventy-three on August 4, 1859. St. John Vianney was canonized in 1925 and was declared the heavenly patron of all parish priests by Pope Pius XI in 1929.

Please join us as we celebrate a Solemn High Mass (Extraordinary Form-Latin) on Wednesday, August 8 at 7:00 p.m. for the feast day of St. John Vianney. The schola will consist of seminarians and seminarians will be serving the Mass. Please come and ask St. John Vianney to intercede on behalf of the priests and seminarians of the Archdiocese that they may have hearts like Christ’s.

EMBRACING GOD’S VISION FOR MARRIAGE, LOVE AND LIFE

Our mission now, as always, is not to surrender to the world as it is, but to feed and ennoble the deepest yearnings of the world and thereby to lead it to Jesus Christ and his true freedom and joy.

FIRST SATURDAY OF AUGUST MEDITATION ROSARY – AUGUST 4 AFTER 8:00 A.M. MASS.At Fatima, the Blessed Mother told us that war is a punishment for sin. She asked us to pray the Rosary for conversion of hearts and to do penance for peace by spending 15 minutes in meditation as we pray the Rosary on the First Saturday of each month.

Please take advantage of this opportunity to honor the Blessed Mother’s request and do your part to bring about peace by praying the Meditation Rosary immediately following the 8:00 a.m. Mass on the First Saturday of this and every month.

of Christ and His Church.” – Pope Paul VI

ASK DEACON JEFFAt ordination, what promises do Deacons make to the Archbishop? In particular, why do they make a promise of celibacy? The unique aspect of diaconate ordination is the fact that this is the point of no return for the young man—their soul is permanently changed. As a part of this, the man makes three promises to the Archbishop—prayer, celibacy, and obedience. This week, I would like to discuss celibacy more in depth. As a young seminarian, I was most concerned with this future promise as it meant that I would never be able to get married and have a family. However, with great spiritual directors, I realized that I was looking at this promise in the wrong light. Celibacy is a great gift. One, it helps us to more perfectly imitate Christ by offering Him every aspect of our lives. Also, in the model of our Blessed Mother, we are called to be radically available to love and serve our Lord whenever He asks anything of us. Celibacy enables the priest to unite himself more perfectly with Christ and, thus, share Christ’s love with all those that he encounters. Christ’s love is for all of God’s children and, so also, a priest’s love is for all of the souls he is responsible for. Thanks and God Bless,Deacon Jeff StegbauerPlease continue to send in your questions to [email protected]!

Are you or do you know someone who is being led to the Catholic Faith? RCIA will be gathering and joining for fellowship and a deeper journey with the Catholic faith starting in September. If you are interested in

participating in RCIA, please reach out to Missy Bennett, Coordinator of Religious Education, at [email protected] or call 498.0433, ext. 1.

HOLY ANGELS PARISHIONER, GRACE FRANTZ, traveled to Ethiopia, to work with Unforgotten Faces, a ministry that provides meals, sanitation needs, clothing, and before and after school tutoring and care to single parent and orphaned children. The below picture is Grace with some of the girls in their new dresses and shirts that the women from Holy Angels Parish made! Grace says, “Saturday is their shower day so they were excited to be cleaned up. The girls were so excited to receive the new dresses and tops from Holy Angels Church, thank you Mrs. Zimmerman and the Outreach Ministry! Houit, one of the little girls on my lap loves dresses and was just so excited to have a new one she kept spinning around. It was so good to see how beautiful she felt.”Please keep Grace and those involved with this important ministry in your prayers.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

ST. LAWRENCE OF BRINDISISt. Peter Chrysologus was a bishop of Ravenna, Italy who died in 451AD. At that time, Ravenna, like Rome, Milan, and Constantinople, was an imperial residence and therefore a very important city. It was also at this time that the Council of Ephesus was held and there was disagreement concerning Mary’s title as Mother of God (Theotokos). Some theologians, like Theodoret, wanted her to be called simply mother of Christ, but St. Peter defended the title “Mother of God” against all heresy. St. Peter was an important personage of his time for numerous reasons including his contact with the empress Gallia Placidia, who constructed the church of St. John the Evangelist because of a vow she made while travelling from Constantinople to Ravenna. Moreover, he had close relations with numerous bishops, including Germain of Auxerre and Pope Leo the Great. The title “Chrysologus” which means “golden word” was conferred on him because he was an unusually gifted preacher. St. Peter Chrysologus encouraged frequent Communion and was a staunch defender of the primacy of the Church of Rome. He especially preached against the annual carnival with its immoral festivities, saying: “He who delights in the devil cannot rejoice in Christ.” He was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1729. His feast day is celebrated on July 30th.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWSHoly Angels will be intertwining the teachings of Saint John Paul II on the Theology of the Body in the parish school curriculum and in the PSR programs for our first through eighth grade programs. Theology of the Body is SJPII’s integrated vision of the human person and is grounded in truth, love and beauty. SJPII delivered these messages at Wednesday papal audiences in Rome from 1974 through 1984. This curriculum emphasizes the theme of love as a self-gift and calls us to love in the image of God. Holy Angels will be using the Theology of Body curriculum from Ruah Woods Press, which has been approved by the Most Reverend Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr, Archbishop of Cincinnati.
