Introduction Acronyms RAS, NAS

Remote Access Server, Network Access Server A.K.A. Access Server

Objectives To give a remote node (computer), IP access to

the LAN the Access Server is installed on, via a dial up connection.

To provide network modem pool functionality (a group of modems on the LAN for workstations to use as needed).

“Hey Day” of dial up access servers, early 1990s thru 2001 or so. Consistent limited corporate need

The LAN port uses Ethernet to transceive IP packets. The Serial WAN ports uses PPP to transceive IP

packets with the remote node via the dial up connection.
