The Missouri River Recovery Fish and Wildlife Mitigation project sounded straightforward enough – the US Army Corps of Engineers needed a contractor to dredge out a side channel of the Missouri River, removing approximately 420,000 yards of material. But when Tim Goslin and Kelly Connors of Great Lakes Dredge and Dock inspected the site and looked at the plans, it became apparent that things would be more than a little tricky. For one thing, access to the worksite was only possible by way of barge from the other side of the Missouri River. More importantly, ground conditions were extremely challenging, requiring a fresh look at how at least some of the material could be removed.

“The dredging part is pretty straightforward,” explained project superintendent Kelly Connors. “Great Lakes Dredge and Dock is the largest dredging company in the US and one of the largest in the world. So the dredging portion of the plan wasn’t the issue. The part that concerned us was the removal of the top 18” of topsoil. This material couldn’t be dredged into the river like the underlying material. It had to be removed and placed on-site above the floodplain. Due to the conditions of the site, this was the part that had us the most concerned.”

The contract required that the top 18” of soil and material be removed from the proposed secondary channel and placed above the flood zone. “During the bid process we looked at several methods to move the top eighteen inches,” said Connors. “We talked about loading out haul trucks or using motor-scrapers. The top layer had to be moved about 1400’ on average, so it had to be hauled. But ground conditions were going to be an issue and we needed something that had excellent floatation. Tim suggested we talk to Titan Rentals about pull scrapers.”

After a call to Titan and a review of the project, the team decided that the most efficient and economical way to move the top layer on the jobsite was a Case-IH Quadtrac pulling a K-Tec scraper. “We were confident that the Quad/K-Tec combo would perform well under these conditions so that was our suggestion,” said Rian Neeser,

Store Manager, Titan Machinery – Sioux City. “We’ve had a lot of experience running in difficult conditions that shut other equipment down. You just can’t beat the floatation of the Case-IH Quadtrac. And with the 1233 K-Tec, you’re going to be able to fill the bowl and get a good load with one scraper versus a pair of smaller pull scrapers. The K-Tec is made tough so that if you do need a push from a dozer to get through a soft spot, it’s not a problem.”

Darren Brown, Machine Control Specialist for Titan Machinery, coordinated putting the machine in the field because of the 3D Leica mapping system that it was equipped with. “The job requires that they take the top 18” off the area where the secondary channel is going to be dredged in,” said Brown. “It’s about 50,000 yards that have to be removed and relocated on-site. With the Leica system we avoid stakes and we have a record of what we did, which is another requirement of the contract. Plus we can record and manage where the material is placed on-site. The Leica system we have on this unit takes care of all that.”

Once the top layer of material is pulled off and relocated on site, the remaining cut is made using dredging equipment. “The plan calls for cuts in the secondary channel of nine-to-ten feet to a maximum of about fifteen feet”, said Connors. “The underlying material will come off and be dredged into the main river channel. The top layer is being placed above the floodplain. It averages about 1300’-1400’ from where we are pulling-off the material with the scraper, and some of it is very difficult terrain.”

The conditions on-site are marshy enough to require a push from a dozer once in a while to make it up to the spoil area. “There’s one spot where we can make it across with the Quad but sometimes the scraper will bog-down when we’re loaded,” said Goslin, who operates the tractor/scraper. “But that’s to be expected. You have to remember that we’re basically operating in a river bottom that’s flooded a lot of the time so the ground is spongy and wet. The water table is almost ground level. The tractor will make it just about anywhere – in fact it can get you in trouble by getting you into places you shouldn’t even be. The scraper can bog-down when it gets really wet but the K-Tec is built so you can push it thru with the dozer so it’s really not a problem. A haul truck or a self-propelled scraper wouldn’t stand a chance out here. A regular 4wd tractor wouldn’t cut-it either. You have to have the quad to get across some of this stuff.”

“Ironically, the guy we have running our push-dozer is a licensed tug boat operator,” explained Connors. “Matt Woodell is normally out on the water pushing barges around. But for this job we have him pushing Tim through the spots with a dozer where it’s too soft to make it with a full scraper of material. He’s a great operator on or off the water. Along with Tim and myself, we’ve got a really good crew working the job out here.”

Due to the fact that there is no land access to the project, all supplies, equipment and manpower have to be barged in from the Iowa side of the Missouri. “It’s quite a sight seeing the scraper and quad sailing along the Missouri River on a barge,” said Brown. “That’s something you don’t see every day.”

“We ride a boat in and out every day,” said Connors. “All our fuel and parts and equipment come in by barge. It’s funny that we’re on the Nebraska side of the river (west side of the Missouri) but we’re actually still in Iowa. Bringing everything in over the river is tricky. It’s just one more thing that adds to the challenge of this particular jobsite. You definitely don’t want to bring in supplies or equipment that you don’t need.”

Access by water is not the only tricky part of the job. “The material we are working in has been placed there by the river,” Connors continued. “It’s varies between pudding and silt and sand and clay. It’s really challenging to load. Even the K-Tec which loads as good as any scraper you’re going to find will struggle in a mix like that. What you have to be aware of is to not try and load sand after you’ve taken on clay or dirt or silt – it won’t load that way. When you are in sand, you

have to pull that in first and then finish up with the other material. And everything is wet so nothing is easy to work with. It takes experience and the right equipment to make this work and keep the cycle times where they need to be. Luckily Tim’s got the experience to be able to handle it without any issues.”

So far the job has been a success and everything is going ahead of plan. “The original plan we had when we bid the job would have been a real hassle,” explained Connors. “I don’t want to think about trying to get off-road trucks across some of this ground out here. We’d have been axle-deep in the muck. Plus it would mean extra machines and manpower and a lot more fuel to barge in. The way we’re doing it now we’re hammering this out with fewer people, fewer machines and less fuel and still getting the yards that we wanted. The way we are set up, we’re able to do it all with a 3-man crew, including myself.”

“I credit having the right equipment and the right people on the job and the right partner advising us on how to approach the job,” he continued. “Tim and I have a lot of experience moving material. And Titan Rentals has provided us with great equipment that’s exactly right for the job. We’re really happy with how the project has gone so far. The support from Titan has been great. The job has been a challenge but so far we’ve been up to it.”
