1) OVERVIEW OF PHARMACY FINAL DISSERTATION

EXAM (PHASE I) - 2015

Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has organized Pharmacy Final Dissertation Exam (Phase

I)-2015 for all the students of M. Pharm (Sem IV) from 28th April to 8th May 2015 at GTU,

Chandkheda Campus, Ahmedabad.

Each year GTU organizes this Final Dissertation Exam (Phase I) during the month of April-May, to

see the overall progress of research carried out by Master students. The works of students are

examined by the eminent experts of related fields. This mechanism provides a platform to students

to get a deeper insight into his/her respective research area. Experts share their experience and give

valuable suggestions to research students for value addition in their respective dissertation work.

During this Final Dissertation Exam (Phase I)-2015 total 1,011 students of M. Pharm have

presented their final dissertation in front of experts.

To do the evaluation of research work done by the students, experts from industry and academia

from outside Gujarat as well as within the state have been invited.

Apart from these 300 experts from GTU affiliated Pharmacy Colleges and from pan India have

been invited during this Final Dissertation (Phase I) 2015.

In brief, Final Dissertation Exam (Phase I) was aimed to provide extended platform for learning and

exploring new areas of research to all M. Pharm students of GTU.

3. REVIEW OF EXPERTS FOR FINAL DISSERTATION EXAM-

2015

April 2015, Tuesday (Day 01)

Dr. Kanchan Kohli from Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi

.

Dr. Haresh Kumar Patel from SPARC, Vadodara

.

As per my opinion supervisor should possess PhD qualification. For the selection of dissertation work,

aim and objective must be very clear to student. Thorough literature survey should be done before

starting the practical work. The University adopted very good method to evaluate students to enhance

quality in research. This time university also provided the guideline for the distribution of marks.

Students have also done good work. Their approach to see patents, rational of work etc. is also good.

The university official’s hospitality is quite good and prompt to arrange our stay, transportation and

food.

As compared to 2011, today there is significant enhancement in quality as well as management with

respect to GTU. Evaluation parameters also defined as per current regulations. Performance of the

students is also little bit increased, still we expect it should improve further. Evaluations parameters has

been improved at different stages viz. ITD, Mid Sem-Review as well as final review, which is excellent.

Presentations are very well organized. Students’ scientific and professional knowledge is good. Good

work GTU, please keep it up.

I would suggest that if soft copy of thesis had been sent to examiner priory, we could come with a

comment, so the evaluation of dissertation would be much better. Soft copy should be sent to email-id of

examiners who have confirmed their availability. Overall good arrangement and execution. Teachers in

few collages need to be trained in research, literature review, research methodology etc. GTU can think

of quality improvement program during summer break for teachers.

The VC of GTU has taken a major step in upgrading quality work for PG course in pharmacy, such type

of work has to be given to the media and the programme list has to be sent to AICTE, PCI and UGC for

their reference. Really, it is a good mode of examination model which has to be followed by our Indian

Universities in various courses. The arrangement of the accommodation is remarkable.

The work being carried out by students is quite novel. However, the applicability in terms of the work is

limited. Students need to have more practical application approach. They should plan and execute work

with an industrial/market application. Basics of students need to be improved. Overall good arrangement

by GTU.

Dr. Renuka Sharma from Nirma Inst. of Pharmacy, Ahmedabad

Dr. Rakesh P.Patel from Ganpat University, Mehsana

Excellent arrangement and hospitality. Arranging the viva at university level without any interference of

guide, college really improves the quality of research work. It is helping to build up the pharmacy

education and R&D at industrial level. If the students are doing/completing their research work at

industry, kindly confirms that he/she is doing research, not the training or compiling of data. If colors

code (as branch wise/ subject wise) to hard copy of thesis has been defined then it will help to identify it

very easily and will look more professional.

The M. Pharm research week is well co-ordinated and conducted program. Other M. Pharm students

should also participate in discussion.

Overall the planning and execution of M. Pharm research week is very good. However I would like to

suggest some points which are summarized below. Systematic approach in research week is missing.

All students are doing experimental work in not proper justifiable way. The quality of work is important

rather than quantum of work. Students give much importance to bulk of work. If possible, we can keep

one (01) expert common throughout in all exams for one (01) student. The step taken by GTU to

improve research work by different means like poster presentation, plagiarism, patent search etc. is

really appreciable and should be continued. The norms of GTU for guiding M. Pharm students should

be followed especially related to number of students per guide in any institute.

I am really happy to say that GTU and its faculty of Pharmacy team has come out with very innovative

ideas and put dedicated efforts to improve the quality of research work of students. I appreciate the time

which is given to examiners. Enough time has been given to examiners, so he/she can really evaluate

students in quality manners. All arrangements, facilities and students distribution is appreciable. I was

not much satisfied with poster presentation by students in mid-review as examiner. I cannot spare fair

time to evaluate students. Rest everything was perfect. I congratulate the Hon. Vice Chancellor,

Registrar, Exam Controller and Dr. Manish Rachchh for maintaining high standards of their exam. This

has really created a very good reputation of GTU in India and abroad as well. Congratulations.

Thanking you.

It is nice arrangement and an examiner to student’s ratio was also fine.

Research week of final dissertation Exam 2015 was found very well in terms of progress of students for

their research project compared to ITD and mid sem review. Moreover arrangement is found excellent.

This time checking of thesis by Anti-plagiarism software is also highly appreciable step. The student

can be directed toward referring reliable source in some way and individual reference are also available

in software as % similarity must be less than 5%, if possible. Reference style can be given to student for

better uniformity in thesis references. Overall the research week was found good.

I would like to suggest that also provide Tea/Coffee to everyone in room including students. Need to

specify file format, presentation format /size. Limit size of slide, different sections and its size for

harmonization of presentation of all students of particular branch.

The concept of conducting such type of research week and bringing together researchers from different

part of the country at a single center is quite unique and may be first of its kind I have seen in India. I

am very much impressed with this concept. Regarding student’s work, I would say that the topics were

conceptualized, executed very well too. However many students are facing problem in communication

in English. I would suggest to introduce Language lab at 1st or 2

nd semester would be better (if is not

there now). The quantity of the work is good and word technique such as QHD, DOE, factorial etc.

many works have also got industrial utility as well.

The way exam are organized is very good. It will be better to synchronize methodology part. The thesis

should consist of raw data, graph, and table along with date of trials done using various instruments like

HPLC, UV and like. This will provide more integrity of data.

I really appreciate the effort taken by Gujarat Technological University to improve the quality of

research at post graduate level. It provides a good platform for the students to learn and improve their

research work. Comments from experts during ITD, Mid Term review and final dissertation really help

to improve technical part of work. Further, to improve writing and presentation skills of students, soft

skill training workshop can be organized by the University.

Very systematic approach for M. Pharm Research work. The work is groomed at all stages and nice to

see all the good presentation. Very novel concept of M. Pharm examination. There are lots of take home

messages to carry with us for our JSS University. All college teachers and students go on mile ahead to

achieve excellence. Students should aim at publishing their dissertation work so that good number of

publication should come out. DOE (Design of experiments) software training should be given to all

students.

Three step processes involved in assessing M. Pharm dissertation in externally well and give in-depth

assessment of knowledge, attitude and skill of students. Students become more competent. The exam is

conducted very systematically. The arrangements are pretty good. The orientation session was

innovative. It sets a tone to the examination’s process.

I have a suggestion to make on thesis writing. Student should be trained to write abstract, keyword,

objectives and methodology in pre-defined structure only.

M. Pharm research week is a unique programme of GTU and this program provides uniform and

unbiased platform for assessment of the students. Orientation to the examiner is very good approach as it

helps the examiner for smooth conduction of examination. Three (03) levels of assessment of M. Pharm

dissertation, enhances the quantity of research project. Hospitality and other arrangements made for the

examiner are par excellent. I take this opportunity to thank GTU for considering me examiner to assess

M. Pharm Phase.

The arrangements of the M. Pharm final dissertation is excellent however when I related the area of thesis

research, I had mentioned about lipid formulation but little bit disappointed as during the examination all

students were not belong to topic specified. Rest everything was good.

There is improvement in the performance of the students. Urban institute students performed better than

non-urban institutions students. English is a problem in general with students. Administrative

arrangements are very good. It appears that some guides have not motivated their student’s presentation

in manners that is expected from them.

It is advisable that University should mention previous title of each student along with revised title (as

suggested during previous examination). Few students have spent much time in mid SEM by carrying

out the preliminary work on the API, since they were getting the API from the reputed company/pharma

industry very late. The certificate of analysis (COA) from the industry is sufficient to carry out

identification of API, so that they should give more for actual methodology of the project required to be

carried out.

This type of research week towards central evaluation of research work of students is very good

approach for maintaining the quality of scientific research work. This provides a platform to evaluate

everyone uniformly. Evaluator’s guidelines are very clear and fulfilling all points need to be taken care

to do fair evaluation. One thing I would like to submit that some time it is required by the research

scholar to modify or rectify some work and accordingly the thesis is to be submitted after correction

which is already in bound form. So I would suggest initially it should be in unbound-form. Hence those

unbound thesis would be proper to present at the time of presentation and after clear node from the

examiner, the students should be permitted to submit the bound form of thesis. Overall this type of

research week is very useful in examining and evaluation towards quality research work and should be

encouraged in different pharm- academic sectors.

Student should bring mid sem report, hard copy along with final thesis copy. GTU should take care of

work done by the students at different colleges.

The research week is being conducted in quite a systematic manner but somewhat more clear

suggestion should be given during midterm examination by examiners.

Dr. Sadhana Rajput from MSU, Vadodara

The confidence level of some of the students was very poor. Clarity of work done, regarding why done,

what was the problem, what is achieved and why is needed etc are points wherein students need to be

improved a lot. All students of a college has done exactly similar type of work, there should have been

variable as I presume all mentors may not be doing research in same area. However very few students

are exceptional and done really good work with clarity in mind. The procedure of evaluations currently

being followed seems to be ok. Regarding availability of research facility at college, University (GTU)

should send some experts to college from time to time to physically check the facilities available.

Overall M. pharm research week experience was quite satisfactory.

Thesis contents need serious attentions of respective guides so I would like to suggest the trainings of

guides to eliminate mistakes in thesis. Remarks at ITD and MSR need to be improved for specific

expectations and remarks should be given by examiners accordingly. In my opinion 6-7 students could

be restricted in a single day for thesis evaluations so as to further improve examinations evaluations.

Signatures on certificate and format part of thesis, if can be done earlier before viva –voice, then the

evaluation could be further improved. Many students are completing thesis work in industry. I feel

some part of research should be made mandatory in college then faculties will also get improved and

goal of GTU could be achieved w.r.t quality.

The arrangements were very good. The accommodation, transportation and food were good. Audio

visual facilities were also good and functioning was smooth. Experts were invited from across the

country which was very good for interaction. The staff was very polite. Tea was not good. Students were

polite. Orientation session is helping hand in evaluation. TA/DA formalities were completed in time and

efficiently. Happy to be part of this exam.

Thesis topic selection and mid sem evaluation should be done more critically.

Research week was very well coordinated, prompt reply of the e-mail was taken, hotel arrangement were

very good. Presentation by the M. Pharm students is also very good. From the presentation we have also

learned new points. Overall research week was great success.

At the outset the overall quality of the dissertation work/research projects is good. However a few

aspects as detailed below should be incorporated which will further improve the standard /quality

of work. Exam is well organized and conducted professionally.

Advanced technique such HPLC method of analysis should be used for analysis.

Although formulation parameters have been optimized, studies on process parameter

standardization should also the incorporated.

Collaborative projects with the pharmaceutical industry should be initiated / encouraged to

build strong links between academics and industry which will help in commercializing the

developed formulations and will further contribute toward bringing benefit of research to

the common man.

IPR aspect should be given prominence while deciding to take up a particular research

work.

Comparison studies with currently available marketed products should form an integral part

of the research work to indicate a definite development or addition to the existing

knowledge.

Standard deviation, standard error etc. should be incorporated to increase the

accuracy/precision of the findings.

Attempts should be made and rewarded for publishing/presenting the research work.

I finally thank you for inviting me and asking me for my suggestions

One semester for Research is very less time, it must be at least for one year (two semesters).

Thank you very much the kind hospitalities extended to me during my visit/stay at GTU in this

connection.

In M. Pharm program, institutes must allocate one or more semesters for Research exclusively. This is the

need of an hour.

The project work of all students should be completed at least one month before exam. Students must be

allowed to see reviewers’ comments. Such reviewers may be examiners or may not be examiners.

This research week in GTU is one of the best and unique event for the evaluation and interaction between

students and experts. It is better if management provides facility to the expert for discussion about their

expertise and collaborates from the university campus. I hope it will continue and provide better platform

and example for our other universities.
