Whether your child’s perfect summer means solving crimes, digging up fossils, or designing their own fashion line, the Indiana State Museum has a summer camp that’s right for them. Camps begin on June 2 and each week delivers a new adventure based on the museum’s outstanding exhibions and collecons. Campers explore topics including forensic science, paleontology, fashion, nature, architecture, history and science ficon for some hands-on, educaonal fun. All camps are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, unless otherwise noted. Before and Aſter Care is available for an addional fee. For registraon and informaon call 317.232.1637. History Alive Summer Camp June 2 – 6, Ages: 8 - 12 From how to build a cabin to what Hoosier life was like during the Civil War, campers experience what life was like during the 19 th and early 20 th centuries through a series of hands- on acvies. Campers “pack” their own wagon for the journey west to Indiana, interact with historical re- enactors and characters, and see first- hand how the Indiana State Museum preserves the Indiana story. Mental Health is an important part of your overall health Mentalhealthandmentalillnessareoftenusedsynonymously–buttheyarenotthesame.Onefactorthatdoesplayaroleinbothofthesepsychologicalstatesthoughisphysicalhealth.

Itisestimatedthatonlyabout17percentofU.S.adultsareconsideredtobeinastateofoptimalmentalhealth.1Mentalhealthis“astateofwell-beinginwhichtheindividualrealizeshisorherownabilities,cancopewiththenormalstressoflife,canworkproductivelyandfruitfully,andisabletomakeacontributiontohisorhercommunity.”2Improvedhealthoutcomescanoftenbeassociatedwithpositivementalhealth.

Mentalillnessisanimportanthealthproblemandisoftenassociatedwithphysicalhealth,aswell.Mentalillnessisdefinedas“collectivelyalldiagnosablementaldisorders”or“healthconditionsthatarecharacterizedbyalterationsinthinking,mood,orbehavior(orsomecombinationthereof)associatedwithdistressand/orimpairedfunctioning.”2

Mentalillnessaccountsformoredisabilityindevelopedcountriesthananyothergroupofillnesses,includingcancerandheartdiseaseaccordingtotheWorldHealthOrganization.3Mentaldisordersandchronicconditions,suchasarthritis,areamongthemostcommoncausesofdisabilityintheUnitedStateswithdepressionbeingthemostcommontypeofmentalillness,affectingmorethan26percentoftheU.S.adultpopulation.3

Althoughoverlookedinthepast,researchhasrevealedthelinkbetweentheoverallphysicalandmentalhealthofindividuals.Manyassociationsexistbetweenmentalillnessandchronicconditionssuchascardiovasculardisease,diabetes,obesity,asthmaandarthritis.Onecommonfindingisthatpeoplewhosufferfromachronicdiseasearemorelikelytoalsosufferfromdepression.4

Evidencehasshownthatmentalhealthdisorders–mostoftendepression–arestronglyassociatedwiththerisk,development,management,progressionandoutcomeofseriouschronicdiseaseandhealthconditions,includingdiabetes,hypertension,stroke,heartdiseaseandcancer.Thisassociationappearstobecausedmostoftenbymentalhealthdisordersthatprecedechronicdisease,butthediagnosisanddailychallengesofmanagingachronicconditionmayleadtothedevelopmentofamentalillness,suchasdepression.Sometypesofmedicaltherapyformentalillnesscanincreasetheriskofdevelopingchronic

conditions,suchasdiabetesand/orhighbloodpressure,also.

Asmoreresearchisbeingdoneintheseareas,itisimportanttorememberthatbothmentalandphysicalhealthhaveaprofoundeffectonone’squalityoflifeandgeneralfeelingofwell-being.Takeamomenttodayandlearnmoreabout

Managing your food and your moodHowwefeelcanoftenbearesultofwhatweeat.Butwhatweeatcanalsobeduetohowwefeel.Foodandbodychemicalsinteracttokeepusgoing.Whenourmoodschange,sodoourbodychemicals.Therearethingswecandotomanagethefoodsweeatwhenourmoodschange.Stressoftenleadstoacravingforcarbohydrates,becausetheyboostserotonin,whichhasacalmingeffect.Lowlevelsoftryptophancancauseadepressedmood,andB-complexvitaminsappeartoplayaroleinnormalmaintenanceofmood.Choosingmorecomplexcarbohydrates,suchaswhole-grainproducts,beans,vegetables,fruits,andotherfoodsrichinB-complexvitaminscanhelpyouincreasethenutritionalcontentofyourmealsandsnacks.Overindulginginfatty,starchyorsweetcomfortfoodswillmakeyoufeelmiserableafterwards.Don’tgotherewhenstressed!You’llfeelhappierwhenyou’reworkingtowardsgoodhealth.However,ifyoujusthavetohavethatfavorite“comfortfood”,beawareofyourportionsandtrynottoovereat.“Afternoonlows”areoftenaresultofpoormealtimingorfoodchoices.Spacemealsthreetofourhoursapartandchooselow-fatproteinandcomplexcarbohydratesforyourmeals.

Indianastategovernmenthasdesignatedthefiscalyearasthetwelve-monthperiodtocalculateFML.ThefiscalyearrunsfromJuly1throughJune30.AllFMLapproval(s)forintermittentleavewillexpireJune30,withthenewfiscalyearbeginningJuly1.

EmployeeswhohaveanapprovalforintermittentFMLinthecurrentfiscalyear(July1,2013throughJune30,2014),andanticipatethattheneedforFMLwillcontinueafterJune30ofthisyear,arerequiredtolog-intoPeopleSoft®Self-ServiceandcompletetheonlinerequestanduploadanewCertificationofHealthCareProviderdocumentingthatneed.
