Centenary companies

Ramon Comellas

President of CIRCUTOR

A few days ago, I received a book published by a company for its centenary. It was a company that manufactured preserved vegetables, which made me wonder what such companies have in order to survive all of the problems that they have faced over such a long time, and how they have managed to adapt to changes. As I felt that this was something uncommon, I asked the Chamber of Commerce how many centenary companies operated in our region, and I was surprised to find that there were over a hundred, many of which I knew, but without being aware of their long history. Most were small or medium-sized companies that had remained under the control of the same family from one generation to the next. They enjoy well-deserved prestige among their, sometimes also centenary, customers, and have managed to adapt to changes without giving up their principles. These companies are not just another brand for their customers, but rather a supplier they appreciate and would miss. They are companies in which the customer usually knows the family of owners and the confidence in the product or service is often related to the confidence the business family deserves. It is also true that there are centenary companies in large corporations, although most of these have changed considerably and have partially lost the objective that inspired their foundation.Among the large corporations, one example of a company faithful to its principles might be Disney, which keeps its founder’s spirit alive. At a time of crisis when we see companies disappearing around us every day, it would be good to think what we can learn from these companies that have managed to withstand and adapt to the changes, overcoming all difficulties.

AR6. Power and power quality analyzer, portable. The ideal tool for simultaneous recording electrical parameters.

Energy efficiency in your hands

▹ Everyone knows that when taking decisions, having information available is essential. Information from the starting point to be able to decide where we want to go and what corrective measures we must take.

With the AR6 portable analyzer, CIRCUTOR brings you an ideal tool

for simultaneously recording electrical parameters in medium and low voltage, single-phase, bi-phase, 3-wire or 4-wire three-phase and fault current electrical installations. At the same time it allows the analysis of the power quality and the recording of the wave shapes of the detected disturbances or transients.

The necessary information will then be available to carry out a full analysis of the installation’s status, which will allow you to establish the measures to take in order to improve electrical consumption habits and, accordingly, a substantial improvement in energy costs.

The impulse centraliser with PLC communicationLM6I2OThe ideal product to integrate the count from other devices which do not have PLC communication

▹ CIRCUTOR has long specialised in the world of PLC communications, integrating this technology into the management of utility meters, and thereby becoming a reference in this sector.

It has now developed the ideal product to integrate the count from other devices which do not have PLC communication.

The LM6I2O is a device designed to communicate through the PLC electrical network or through a serial port. Its main function is to read the pulse inputs from other devices such as water and gas meters, or other equipment which emits pulses.

It has 6 count inputs, each one of which is independent, and all the calculated pulses are saved and sent

to the PLC800 concentrator by PLC communication. The inputs have a dual function. They can be used as pulse inputs, and also as status inputs.

The equipment also has 2 relay outputs, which can interact with contacts, sound or light alarms, etc.

The LM6I2O sends the accumulated

pulses to the PLC800. The device includes a memory where all the information is saved. Its features are:

y Reading and accumulating the impulses of each one of its 6 inputs.

y Time signature of each one of the inputs.

y Generating complete daily summaries of each one of the count values.

y Generating monthly billing closures of each one of the count values.

y Managing the outputs using commands received via the serial port or PLC

y Knowing the output status at all times.

y Dual-function inputs. Pulse inputs (count) Status inputs

y Generation of event reports. Power supply failure. Start-up following power supply failure.

Time changes. Parameter changes. Activation / deactivation of relay outputs.

 Activation / deactivation of input.

y If there is no PLC800 concentrator for communication, the equipment has an RS232 communication port (or RS485 on request) to communicate with other software through the MODBUS protocol.

APPLICATION

The LM6I2O, is ideal for recording the count of other devices such as water and electricity meters or other equipment. y Ideal for installations such as: y Camping grounds y Sea ports y Housing

news

▹ From the time the company was founded almost 40 years ago, CIRCUTOR S.A. has focused its energies not only on developing new innovative products but also applying the latest technological improvements to existing products to broaden their features. In keeping with our interest in constant innovation, CIRCUTOR introduces a new design of its classic and well known range of prismatic capacitors, CS (for standard applications) and CF (for harmonic filtering applications), now known as CSB and CSF.

Thanks to the changes we have introduced to this existing range of capacitors, the already excellent properties of robustness and security have been even further enhanced. Improvements have been made not only to the internal connection system of the single-phase capacitive elements (coils) making up the three-phase capacitor, but also to the way in which these elements are manufactured.

The new method of assembling the elements is based on a collector plate similar to the kind of technology used in power electronics, which offers a

Page 13: Responses to the new realitydocs.circutor.com/docs/Mag_201101_03.pdfcontents 2 CIRCUTOR Magazine 2011-01 2011.01 Responses to the new reality 04 applications Circutor and the Chocolate

“Through constant innovation we are able to continue improving our products, making them safer, more durable and more cost-effective for our clients ”

13

number of significant advantages over the usual cable-based connection method. These advantages include:

y The capacitive elements inside the metal casing are arranged uniformly, which in turn guarantees a uniform thermal dissipation of the coils.

y Significant reduction of the wiring inside the capacitor, which in turn reduces losses (greater efficiency) and minimises potential problems due to faulty wiring.

y Shorter metal casings than those used to date for the same power levels. This reduces the weight and by extension the shipping costs of the capacitors and the automatic capacitor banks equipped with them.

All of these innovations have led to a series of capacitors with excellent features that offer our customers a number of advantages without increasing cost, such as:

y 60% longer average useful life of the capacitor which guarantees a greater return on the investment made in the installation of the capacitor bank.

y Increase in the thermal class of the capacitor from Class C (maximum ambient temperature of 50 ºC) to Class D (maximum ambient temperature of 55 ºC), making it possible to use the capacitors under more adverse thermal conditions.

y Optimisation of the space occupied by capacitor banks.

y 4 levels of protection: Self regeneration (minimum capacity loss)

Internal fuse (individual disconnection of damaged element)

Surge system (gas extraction) Vermiculite (fireproofing)

As far as the capacitive elements are concerned, we continue to use only European-made polypropylene and we have improved the system for adding the thermoset resin used to insulate the metallised polypropylene coils. An innovative filling procedure guarantees the uniformity of the layer of insulation surrounding the coil, preventing any trace of air from coming into contact with the coil and thereby reducing to a minimum the risk of rusting, the principal threat faced by capacitors.
